Beautiful Garden Path
I have 3 teenagers and a 9 year old. We went rock "hunting" and searched all over for free wood chips. Filled the truck load after load and layed the chips down on top of plastic. And made this garden path on the side of our home. We trimmed some trees and made trellises. The only thing we purchased for the garden path was a birdbath I got for Mother's Day and some flats of flowers...we love it. The best compliment I received was "Dang Tracey, I feel like I should be paying to walk on your path" : )

I read your explanation of how you guys hunted for free materials and built the path, but when the picture finally appeared on my slow computer, I was amazed at how beautiful it really is. It looks like a path from a Disney film, it must be a wonderful place to be after a long day. If everyone believed in their own ability to create like you guys did, imagine how stunning the world would be.

Wood chips are great! We have used them all around our trees in the yard. I spray roundup around the trees first and then put down mulch. No worries about trying to cut the grass around the tree trunk anymore. Plus it looks great! When we mow with the big mower we do not have to spend time trimming around small objects.
Just a question...how are you mowing around the little rocks on the edge of your path? What about this idea... take some lawn edging...fairly deep...at least 6". Use the lawn edging and line the outside edge of your path about 18" from the stones, then roundup the grass between the stones and the lawn edging and plant perennials in this area...something like ...daylilies. Daylilies will fill out and soften the edge of the path and provide a perennial edging that you will not have to plant again. Mulch around the daylilies and there will be virtually no weeding either. Then you will also not have to trim around all those little cute rocks.
I'm glad that you put plastic down first. Putting down plastic first and then mulching will definitely cut down on your weeds in the path in the future. I find that the weeds...dandelions...may germinate in the mulch but because of the landscape fabric underneath they do not form a strong root system and therefore are easy to pull out.
Slowly replace your annuals with perennials and some shorter shrubs and you will not have to replant them again and again. Add a few annuals for continuous color in the flower beds if you want. All my beds in my yard are perennial/shrub beds. Annuals I plant into pots and place on top of the beds in areas where there are holes in the landscaping...for example, from tulips that have come and gone.
The path that you and your family created together looks great. I know that you will be able to enjoy it for many years to come.

Great idea. The kids did a WOMDERFUL job!! This is not only thrifty and creative but family oriented.
This is much better than having kids playing electronic games!!! I hope you sit out there and enjoy the fruits of all your labor and love.

That is pretty, it looks so peaceful. You and your children worked very hard and it shows. You are teaching your children how to be creative and thrifty at the same time, something that they will surely use in their adult life. You deserve a pat on the back and your kids one too.
