Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

We've recently purchased our first home. Already we've put stains on our nice, white kitchen countertops (made of laminate?). I don't know much about cleaners, but have tried Fantastic with Bleach and Windex. The stains didn't even fade at all. I'm not sure what the stains are from, but since they're circular, I'm guessing they're from perhaps tea or coffee in cups. Help! Thanks much, Libby

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

I came across this post after getting a nasty yellow stain on our bathroom white laminex benchtops that are about 50 years old (rental properly).
We had already tried baking soda and vinegar with no success and we are trying to use a minimal number of harsh cleaners so we gave the magic eraser a go (made by Chux in Australia, I got mine at a local supermarket and I found it where the scourers are stocked) and it worked a treat, the stain isn't 100% gone but it's only about 5% of the original stain and for 50 year old laminex I'm pretty happy with that result.
Incidentally (after seeing how good a job it did on the laminex) I also found the magic eraser did the trick with a few old stains on the interior walls that I previously thought only sugar soap would get rid of.

The Tarnex tip really worked after having tried other methods with no success. I hope it is safe to use on kitchen counters. Seems like it should be, if used with caution, since it is designed for use with silver trays, dishes, etc.

Hi there all, go back to basics! I had a horrible yellow bleach stain. I used good old fashioned bi carb (baking soda) and vinegar, and left it to sit, then scrubbed, put more on, then left it and scrubbed again, worked a wonder, no gloves, no dangerous chemicals, no stress!

I have white laminate countertops and the best thing I have used is Grease Lightning. It removed a rust stain from my counter and Kool-Aid Stains too!

I had yellowed stains on my white bathroom counter top and tried a bit of baking soda and then used an SOS pad. It got most of the stain up, so it worked pretty good for me.

I've got a similar problem--terribly stained white countertops, which I need to clean before I move out of my apartment. And I'm allergic to chemical cleaners--specifically, to the fragrances and fumes. So I can't use Mr. Clean, Oxiclean, Soft Scrub, Clorox, or anything like that.

Here's what I've tried (none of it has worked): An Earth Friendly Products cleaner that's supposed to be a non-chemical equivalent to Soft Scrub. It has worked very well on my bathroom and kitchen sink, but it's not getting those stains out.

Non-chlorine bleach. Baking soda. And baking soda/vinegar mixes.

WOW! What a lot of posts! We must all have the dirtiest or cleanest counters in the world! Have you tried the Magic Eraser? That's the only thing that got off some of the stains on my white counters.

I got blue paint on my white countertops after removing an ice cream pint from a blue coaster and setting it on the counter. I just put some baking soda on a damp sponge, gave it some elbow grease, and it lifted the stain off in about 5 minutes.

Just a note to everyone. I used Tarn-x to remove a yellow bleach stain and it worked wonderfully but six months later, sat a pan in the same spot and it made a stain that could not be removed with the same method. I am still trying.

I had yellow rings left on my white counters from the metal formula containers. I put baking soda on a damp sponge and I did have to scrub a little but, it came off. I feel better about not using harsh chemicals with my baby girl in the house!

I've been trying to clean a stain on my cream colored counter top for a while now and the stain is possibly three years old and I've had no luck, is there any hope for me.

Editor's Note: I've cleaned stubborn stains on counter tops by taking Oxiclean powder and wetting an old toothbrush with hot water, then scrubbing it into the stain. It's worth a try.

I have a red countertop and used a Mr. Clean eraser and ruined the top. It took the shiny finish off and now it stains badly.

Toothpaste with baking soda also works very well.

TARN_X There is a very clear reason nobody has capitalized on this as a bench top stain remover!

Hi there I loved this thread as I had very stained cream counters. It took a bit of research to find Tarn X like product We don't sell it in Australia but the main Ingredients are Thiourea & sulfamic ascid so I found Tarn-Off which is basically the same thing foe Aussies.
Magically it worked for me too.
(this after trying "silvo" which didn't work at all)
After discovering Tarn offs magical properties I thought I better see if it was a safe chemical as it had very little smell which worried me more.
In one of these threads a women was using her hands to spread it over counter tops and another had been using it for 2 years every week.
I found out it can mess with you're reproductive system and cause birth defects . HMMM?

SO WARNING THIS IS A DANGEROUS CHEMICAL DO NOT BREATH IN OR PUT ON HANDS.
Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause reproductive and fetal effects.

Probable carcinogen and mutagen: Thiourea causes cancer in rats. Wash hands thoroughly after use.

It may work but Be very careful fellow fighters of stains.
check out these sites before deciding on whether white or stained cupboards matter that much given the health dangers of this product.

After I read your posts, I ran right out and got Tarn-X and it worked instantly. I had a feeling my yellow counter top was the result of to much Clorox but wasn't convinced till I read the posts. Thank heavens for the internet and your valuable posts.

We had this same problem - as a result of Clorox Clean-up. I tried just about everything - but Tarn-X (tarnish remover) was the only thing that would remove the stains. Thanks so much for the tip, Sophy!

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

A solution of 75% Cascade crystals and 25% clorox diluted in hot water will remove just about any stain without altering the color. I even use it to get out stubborn stains from my white laundry. Mostly cottons, doesn't work well on anything "stretchy" or silky. Somehow, the Cascade reduces the severity of the bleach while it keeps it's cleaning power.

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

Thanks to Sophie5 and Margaret for the tip re liquid silver polish. Astounding! My old white formica counter tops have yellowed over time from using Clorox spray cleaner to remove tea, fruit and coffee stains (never use bleach on white counters!!). So I tried the liquid silver cleaner...poured a small, test amount on the counter. Miracle!!! It instantly removed all of the yellowing and other stains too. I put on gloves, poured on more and smooothed it over the entire counter like I was finger painting, then sponged it off. The entire counter is completely "white" again...no yellowing, and no food/drink stains. This is frankly amazing and I thank you VERY much for the tip.!! (And this was after I tried the Mr. Clean eraser..which didn't work too well... as well as Oxi-Clean. Oxi-Clean did help but I could see it was going to take a number of applications to really get the yellow stains out...and I have a very long counter!)

My white counters have accumulated brownish stains on them over time. I used to use Fantastik and it worked great! But now it doesn't work and leaves a mess that takes me a while to clean up. So thanks to many of your suggestions, I tried the Magic Eraser. It took the stains right off, and with no mess to clean up!

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

I used some Clorox Clean-Up on my white countertops in my brand new house, and I got those ugly dark yellow stains, too. The Tarnex silver cleaner removed them. There is a warning on the Clean-Up bottle about OLD countertops, but our house is brand new. I was just sick about it until I found this site. I'm sorry I didn't get Corian countertops all through the kitchen. I just had that brand put on the island because Corian is so expensive.
Sophy5--thank you for posting the remedy to these stains!

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

This is to thank "Sopie5" for her suggestion to use a liquid silver cleaner to remove a stain from a white Formica counter top. I tried it, and it worked! I had a nasty black mildew stain from leaving a sponge to soak up water that gets around my set in sink. First I used Zud to no avail. Then I sprayed it with Clorox Clean Up--big mistake as it left a 6 inch dark yellow stain. To remove the yellow stain I tried Zud, baking soda, lemon juice, white vinegar, and peroxide--none worked. The silver cleaner got it all but a slight hint of yellow. It's a great improvement. Thank you.

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

You'll be surprised of my AMAZING discovery!
Just like all of you, every clorox product ruined my white countertop. I accidentally found the cure!!!
Pour a liquid silver cleaner on the countertop( the cream form doesn't work), and it will become white as snow within seconds!
Cool hein?
You need to use the kind in which you are supposed to dip your silver jewlery, and it works like a miracle!
I've done it for 2 years now every week, and it has not damaged my countertop at all. So you can go for it with no problem!
Have fun!!!

I was interested in Grandma Margy's comments about her formica worktop 30 years old. I have the same formica in my kitchen but have recently noticed that some white patches have appeared on the grey mottled surface. I can't remove them with normal cleaning methods. I have tried to find out if this is a dangerous substance such as asbestos which might have been used for heat-retarding but with no luck. Anyone know anything about old formica?

Bar Keepers Friend works like magic and does not scratch laminate. Don't replace your countertops- any surface will require cleaning.

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

My countertops are laminate, white with gold flecks, believe it was called Formica way back when it was new! I've been abusing them for over 30 years! I get coffee stains, tea stains, grape juice stains, tomato stains you name it. I have always just splashed a small amount of pure liquid bleach on the stained area and then wiped it around with a damp cloth or paper towel, rinsed out the cloth with water and rewiped the area. Stains are gone! The countertop is holding up better than I am! LOL

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

Wipe the countertop with a moist rag then gently scrub with a Chore Boy metal scouring pad to remove deep stains.

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

What worked on old stains on my old white countertops was a paste of Oxiclean. Take a sponge and get it wet with HOT water, pour a little oxiclean on the stain and set the sponge down on it, scrub a little and in a few minutes the stains were gone.

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

Today i will be using baking soda and also softscrub on white laminate countertops. I hope that one or both of these products work because>>>>i am a house cleaner as my profession and i haven't had any luck with many other products that i have tried. I will give feedback after my results. Thanks to all.

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

I have always used baking soda and water - it works great - I have an almost white counter top and despite my best efforts my husband insists on putting down tomato based sauce stains and orange juice stains. These can be relatively old and they will scrub out with a small effort. This technique works on my white linoleum floor also (almost always)

RE: Stains on White Kitchen Countertops

I'd contact the manufacturer of the worktop if you know who it is and ask their advice. Also, if this is a newly built house, (as opposed to a just 'new' to you house), I would contact the builder, tell them the worktops are not practical/made of a suitable material for their function and ask for them to be replaced. After all, do you really want to look forward to removing stains from these worktops for the next 10-20 years????

I HAVE CREAM COLORED COUNTERTOPS AND TILEX WORKS GREAT ALSO YOU MIGHT TRY USING BAKING SODA ON A DAMP SPONGE TO TRY TO REMOVE STAINS( BAKING SODA IS NOT OVERLY ABRASIVE SO IT MIGHT REQUIRE SOME ELBOW GREASE)
