Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

I have 2 boys and 2 male cats that just got fixed. There are black marks on my carpet through out the house. One cat decided to spray everything and the cat that would only go to the bathroom outside has been forced to stay in. I've cleaned up a lot of messes. Since they have been fixed, one has quit spraying but the other has not. When I see him sniffing around, I lock him in the bathroom with the box. It seems to be geting better.

I can't take the smell or the stains any longer. The items I have on hand are Oxy Clean, Vinager, proxcide, anomia, alcohol and baking soda. The black stains are deep. What mixture can I use to to take care of all of this? Any help would be great.

Thank you in advance.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

I see a similar theme with the Nature's Miracle not being quite the "miracle" advertised and the consensus that peroxide and/or combo of peroxide and alcohol seems to work. I sublease a house with a roommate who hated my cat to begin with and now that she has ruined his area rug which had to be thrown out and the surrounding area of carpet, he REALLY hates her! (I can't say I'm too fond of her lately either! HAHAH!) Anyway, I used over a bottle of the Miracle stuff over a few days and it seemed to work to fade the stain though not so much the odor, however, this was 4 mos ago and the stain gradually came back, now big as ever. If I use the peroxide, I'm concerned it might affect the color of the carpet (pale beige) and I canNOT afford to replace the living room carpet! Does anyone know if peroxide will ruin it or whether or not that lasts long term? Thanks so much!

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

My cat had a urinary infection. She let me know this by peeing on a section of my carpet on the stairs landing. I tried rug cleaning, Natures Miracle, Simple Green, Boundary, Ect. Putting a towel down after each product. Still she went!

After reading many posts online, I came up with the following:

Isopropyl Alcohol, and Hydrogen Peroxide. I spent one week soaking the spot with one, letting it dry, and then soaking with the other. I used over 2 gallons all told. I placed a towel on top after each application. I had a fan running on high to help the process of drying.

When all was dry, I bought "Carpet Runner Plastic" at the hardware store (it's the stuff that comes on a roll and sticks to the carpet - to protect it when movers, workman come and you don't want dirt). Placed some on the section where she was going and I had since treated.

I then kept my fan in place so the noise and blowing air would be a bother to her. After a week of this. She no longer goes on the rug!

I tried SCOE10X to remove the urine odor. I followed the directions to a T................does not work. Don't waste your money. I am going to try the vinegar/peroxide/water combo after reading the comments.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

My cat Arnie has suddenly lost his mind and started using the carpet as his new bathroom. Over the last few months I have spent endless hours cleaning the carpet with anything, I could find to get him to stop I have tried everything, Deodorizers, Vinegar ,Baking soda Commercial products , Professional carpet cleaners, Home Rental Cleaners, Special Enzymes cleaners, pepper, cloves, netting, wooden 2 by 4 planks. EVERYTHING

I am happy to say that I have finally found a solution and I just wanted to share it with you

By the way our carpet is / was Dark forest green. What you are looking at is cement. for tools you just need a sharp utility knife

Does hydrogen peroxide work on porous wood? I just took up my wall to wall carpet and there are pee spots in some corners.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

I will chime in also with "2 thumbs up" for the Hydrogen Peroxide solution for ridding cat pee odor. It works for all the reasons already stated.

Urine is mostly a protein compund and the peroxide breaks down those proteins, thus, eliminating the offending odor. As said, the area in question must be throughly soaked/saturated, and allowing the liquid time to work before sopping up w/towels and/or using a wet-dry vac.

PEROXIDE ALONE WORKED!

I had a cat pee all over the carpet in my powder room off my living room. I tried everything including lemon juice and orange oil nothing worked. Then after reading this I poured a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide all over the carpet mushed it in and put a towel over it. I came home from work today to a clean smelling house! How nice!

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

Dear CDA, I can understand your confusion with all of the conflicting information presented here. Really it's simple:
The solutions to cat pee damage are:
1. Throw it out (for example on a newspaper)
2. Wash it (for example a small throw rug)
3. Destroy it chemically (for example on a carpet)

Item #3 is of most concern because you can't immerse carpet or a couch to wash it, and you can't afford to throw it away. Destruction can be achieved in two ways; enzymes or oxidation. Enzymes are relatively expensive if the area to be treated is large, so if it's bigger than a small spot, this, oxidation is the method of choice. Oxidation is a chemistry term that implies a type of reaction which can involve oxygen, but not necessarily. For example chlorine is an oxidizing agent. Anyhow, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE is usually the best agent to use for severe staining and odors. Obviously, if you use enough water (or vinegar, or seltzer, or baking soda water...) you are essentially washing out the residue, but this is not a workable method to remove large areas of pee. Chemically destroying the pee residue is the best method. As I mentioned before, chlorine (ie bleach) is an oxidizer, but it is too reactive and will damage many materials, additionally it will leave chemical residue and bleach odor (fine maybe if you like the smell!). Hydrogen peroxide is safe and will leave no residue since it rapidly breaks down into oxygen and water. The oxygen destroys the pee and only water is left behind. Since peroxide also kills bacteria and fungi, the area is much less likely to grow mold or sour as it dries. Sufficient peroxide must be applied to saturate the area and react with the pee residue.
Read my two entries below for more info on how to apply it. Always check a small area first to be sure that the color won't be affected (usually it isn't, but don't risk it!)

Happy cleaning!!

It gets confusing reading the comments. I come across countless like this:
"okay, do this, this works, trust Me, trust ME, ME!" Either there are in reality many "solutions" and that may be literal, or just many opinions.

Spots are best removed with seltzer water (make sure it doesn't have any sugar in it) and then use Spray and Wash. Being a black stain, Tilex might bleach the spots.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

I just recently left my cat alone for two days and when I arrived home my apartment stunk of pee. He is not used to being left alone so long so I think he did it for that reason. The worst thing is that he peeded in my closet. I tried a bunch of different things that seemed to work for a little while but when I would come home again after a couple of hours the smell would be back and would even seem worse. I think now after reading your posts that I used cleaners with ammonia. I am going to try some of the remedies posted here. Thanks for all the ideas and hopefully they will work.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

Additional information of removing cat urine:
Use a blacklight to help locate the areas of urine. Darken the room and use a good blacklight (I use a 15W bulb in an "under the counter" type fixture). Hold it about 2 feet above the carpet and the urine will glow (wet or dry). Check the walls while you're at it!

Remember that the area of soak will be about twice the area of the stain on top of the carpet. Pour the peroxide on the area that glows and then pour enough additional to fully saturate the surrounding area. Walk over the area to work the peroxide through the carpet and padding. If any of the liquid still looks brown or yellow after 2 hours, add more peroxide and "walk" it into the carpet.
Let it work for about 2-4 hours, walking over the area occasionally. If you've put enough peroxide on the area, it will show liquid as you step down on the carpet. Use old towels and soak up all of the liquid, walking over the towels to assist the process. if you have a wet vac it helps to remove the liquid and fluff the carpet.

The carpet needs to get fully dry within a day or it will begin to sour or grow mold under the padding. The nice thing about peroxide is that it breaks down into water and oxygen. it will leave no harmful residue. Enzyme solutions can cause allergies in sensitive persons, peroxide won't. If you got enough peroxide applied, all of the stain and odor will be gone. If there is still odor, use you nose and/or the blacklight to find the areas that may have been missed and do the "treatment".

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

Forget using the enzymes and pet store "magic" solutions, they're very expensive and don't work.

What does work? Hydrogen peroxide.

We had an area of carpet that reeked and had brown stains on it. It was a synthetic fiber carpet, so I figured it wouldn't bleach the color. I got about a dozen quart bottles and saturated the rug and padding. I walked over the area to work the solution through the carpeting and padding, let it set for about 4 hours, then put old towels down and let it soak up. I walked over the area and kept changing towels until it was all soaked up. The next day it was fully dry and all of the stain and smell were gone. Works well and very inexpensive if you get the cheap quart bottles at Walmart. It might bleach some natural fabrics, so try it on a hidden area first, but most synthetics have the color in the fiber and the peroxide can't penetrate, so it won't remove the color. The trick is fully saturating the area so that the peroxide can reach all of the urine in the carpet padding and tack strips.

Could we refer to this as cat urine?

I use white vinegar, water and baking soda.

Nature's Miracle Mystery

Looks like I read the dates backwards, that the pro natures miracle posts came before the con natures miracle posts. anyways it brings up a point that ads should find others places to be than consumer forums. I trust those most without vested interests (ahem). Many peeps I've seen on the net say that odors return with the stuff.

Someone needs to invent a cocktail that chemically mixes perfectly with pee, like an olfactory puzzle piece, that together smells exactly like your favorite flower or something, or maybe there's some anti pee substance, like two equal and opposite sine waves that cancel each other out. so you just pour it on. that would be easier.

Questionable Nature's Miracle Posts and Kitty Psychics

It seems to me that Nature's Miracle got an unusual amount of animated enthusiastic almost ad-like (ahem) plugs, by 'guest users' after the consumer community agreed that it didn't work for them at all. Not really my business, but I like fairness.

As for the Woolite stuff, brutal, feels like my DNA is corroding. I'd rather the cat pee smell than this. I'm not a fan of old school earth-mean chemical cleaners as it is, but you know cat pee removal missions can make you crazy and do things spur of the moment. Looks like there's no easy and singly agreed upon solution. Quite amazing considering that we can build rocket ships.

I think we need to go to the source of the problem, that is, we still don't really know how to communicate effectively with cats despite all the time we spend with them, or explain to them that we'd prefer they express themselves without peeing on porous immovable materials. If anyone ever figures out how to explain something like this to one of them, please post it here. Maybe there's a kitty psychic who's the real deal. perhaps on google.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from subfloor

Ok! We bought a bank owned 400k property. We were told by neighbors the previous owner bred Yorkies in this home. Well they have pretty much destroyed the entire 1st level of this home. (Urine) we have removed and trashed the 5 inch baseboards, the new carpet the realtor put in to try cover the smell in order to sell it, and gone as far as to cut out the drywall all along the floors on level 1.We have used 2 coats of Kilz oil based primer. We waited for it to dry to determine its effectiveness and it still smells. We have done extensive research to find the best solution to eliminate the odor with no luck. Seems like the only thing left to do is replace the entire sub-floor and we do not want to do that! What do you think? Are there any other options? Can email me @ suzansellsreos AT yahoo.com

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

It can't be said enough, vinegar, water and baking soda works. I put the baking soda down dry on a tile floor and then mopped the vinegar, water solution over the baking soda. I let the solution sit all day and then mopped it clean later. The smell is gone.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

Don't use anything like bleach or that has ammonia in it, to a cat this smells like cat pee. Use a biological wash powder as this has enzymes in it that break down the smells, and surgical spirits may help.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

I just used the vinegar, peroxide mix, and I'm waiting to see what happens.. My cat began peeing in her room, which I know is a behavioral thing.. She used to go outside when we lived in Key West, but here in upstate NY I'm scared of her coming in contact w/ the unknown things in the woods. There is a stray that is coming around, and this is when she starts. It's been bad and then gets better, but I needed something to finally take the deep rooted smell away. We just adopted two main coon kittens (5 mo).. so this is hopefully a behavior cure. She needs friends and now she has got them. I want a pee smell free home, so hopefully it works. i'll post my results.

love,

pee smell free home.. i hope..

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

I have 2 male cats. BOTH fixed and the older one is starting to spray, I have tried baking soda, hotwater and soap in the carpet cleaner, carpet fresh pet for odors,febreeze,409 carpet pet odor and stains, and it still smells horribly. I'm about to just find the cats a new home, because I'm tired of dealing with this. ozzy has had a urinary tract infection before and he never sprayed and we got him treated. but now he's doing it just in the living room. I'm going to try the vinegar and water/baking soda and by the grace of god might work. we just remodelled this house and i'll be danged if animals are going to ruin everything new.

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

hey
We have 5 cats in our house and one girl kitty that keeps peeing on the back of the same couch! we just bought it 6 months ago and so we cant buy a new one. We have been using vinigar and water for ages, but the problem is that she keeps going there after its been treated. I think the strong vinigar smell is stressing her out... does anyone know of anything i can put on the couch that wont encourage her to go there again?

Editor's Note: I've been real happy working on the same problem using Oxy Solution by Simple Solution. It's available at Petsmart. I've used just about every other type of pet odor mixture and in my opinion, this one works the best. It's a bit pricy but a little goes a long way and it works.

Natures Miracle

Don't even bother with Natures Miracle. I have literally used seven gallons of this nonsense in one area of carpeting over a period of about three weeks. As soon as the carpeting gets wet or its humid outside the smell returns like you never treated it. That means it doesn't work!

I am going to try some borax. It seems from your helpful descriptions that it not only helped remove the smell but also kept the cat from coming back. I am also purchasing new litter boxes and Cat Attract litter as opposed to cleaning the old ones - we have a cat that scratches the litterboxes, and smells can get inside the pourous plastic and stay there.

I have tried NATURES MIRACLE and it does NOT work at all. I am glad some people have luck with it but I have wasted over $75 trying to clean the area with that stuff. I am going to try on of the other suggestions on this forum now. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas! It is so annoying to have a brand new house that smells so bad people notice it when they come over. ~sigh~

so, i waited 2 weeks for the natures miracle, and it smells just as bad as it did when i started. i have a black light, and NOTHING shows up. i have kept her out of the room, so i know she hasnt peed again. i was thinking of renting a carpet cleaner, then after it drys, using the vinegar.. do you think this will be worse or make it better??

RE: Removing Cat Pee and Odor from Carpet

natures miracle isnt helping me so far.. i live in a new apartment, and my cat is angry from the move, and the new bed we bought our baby. she had her yearly vet check up one month ago. i know it has only been 4 days since the treatment, but it smells terrible where she has peed, in my sons room.. the whole room stinks! i have searched the entire room, and there is only the one spot, and i cant be tearing up the carpet and going to extremes.. is there hope for me with the natures miracle if i just hold out a little longer?

Editor's Note: It doesn't sound like it is working unless you are treating the wrong spot. Cats don't take well to moves. I would keep your cat in the bathroom with a litter box and food for a few days so that she isn't reoffending. Just make sure you go visit her regularly.

Getting a black light so you can look for the spots may also help. I have a female cat that actually sprays the walls. There may have been a cat in there previously and she is trying to get rid of the other cats scent.

I moved into my house a year ago... laid brand new carpet and padding and a few weeks ago the Cats started peeing!!!! I soak and soak the spot with that stuff but they keep going back!!!!! I am an animal lover with 4 dogs and 2 cats..... But if i cant get them to stop then the cats will have to go!! :( I hear alot about vinegar and water.....Is there something i can put/spray over a 3ft by 3 ft area to make then stay away?!?!?!

I will say that Urine Gone does not work on carpets. I used it and the smell became 10x worse. I don't know what that stuff is made of, but I suspect it is sabre tooth tiger pee.
