Puppy Will Only Pee on Newspaper
I have taken the dog for 2 or 3 days at a time to try and help. I've had the dog out in the garden for more than 3 hours and you can see quite clearly she wants to go. Eventually giving up we go inside and within minutes she pees on the paper. This is a regular occurrence. Originally the dog was very timid and petrified of noises and anything that moved but it is more confident now. Can someone please help?

Sounds like your dog needs to go for a walk and let him smells the markings of other dogs. Walking will also help him get use to different sounds.

My pup is similar. She will go on paper, but also on her bed. (Why is this?) We have tried taking newspaper outside but she won't go. We have stayed outside with her for an hour and beyond when it is obvious she needs to go, and still nothing. What can we do? We're really struggling and it is causing our family much distress.

Don't take the paper outside, take the dog!
Take the dog at those times that are classic, upon waking, after eating etc. Other times, you've got to watch his body language and when it shows he's going to "go", leap up, say OUTSIDE! and take him outside and STAY OUT THERE UNTIL HE GOES! AND THEN Praise him lots!
Take him for long walks and then praise him lots when he goes. Use the same wording/tone. Whenever my dog "goes" outside I say "Good Girl, Go Potty!" and she's 11 years old. Yes, I've done this since I got her and for some time now I can say "go potty" when we're out for a potty break and she will do so on command. And, yes, I say "Go Poop!" also when we're out after meals or if we're on a walk and she poops. Lots of praise! Dosen't matter what words you use but be consistent.
HAVE patience! You trained your son. Remember the patience? The dog will actually get "it" a lot quicker that he did.

I have found it helpful to use one command word "outside" when you are taking the dog out. It does take some patience, rewards, and persistence to train them properly. Definitely take the paper with you since that is what she is used to. Once you are outside, give the command in a serious but not threatening way. "Outside" means that is what we are doing out here. When she goes, praise her and give her a small treat. I use the smallest piece of cereal or a small bite of bread. Eventually, usually within a couple of weeks, the dog learns the command and will go readily. Each time, try to make the paper smaller until there is no paper. Best of luck to you. My 7 month old puppy will now go as soon as I give the command.

I would do as the others suggested and take a potty paper outside as well. This will make clean up a lot easier. Also
play with the puppy while she is out. This will distract her, and maybe she will just go after playing. I would also
leave papers down in the house, maybe in the bathroom, or out of site spot. That way she won't have accidents in the house.

My first thought was also taking the potty paper outside ;-) But also make sure there's potty paper inside until she understands to potty outside so there are no accidents causing frustration for her, your son and you during the training ;-)

It might help to "gradually" move the paper outside - a little closer to the door each day and then outside.

Have you tried taking the paper outside with you? My thinking is that you may be able to convince her, by taking the paper outside, that outside is the potty place. After a while of taking paper to the same spot in the yard, try taking the puppy with no paper. By the way, tell your son congrats on picking such a picky potty-er, she sounds like a smart girl.
