Recorating My Room With a Vintage Theme
My mom and I have started redecorating but don't really know where to go. I love vintage stuff, and I like being different; so i wanted my room to look a little different then what you'd expect from a girl my age. Our idea theme for my room was revolved around black and white city pictures.
The colors we chose were Pink, Turqouise, black, a yellow orange, and off white.
My room is really busy! It looks like a 10 or 11 year old room now. I really want it to be more organized for school and also, i just like the look of not a lot of stuff out and about.
PLEASE help me go from boring to Chic! ANY ideas are welcome!

Is there a Ross store near you. I've seen alot of vintage decor there. Try thrift stores, yard sales, antique shops.

For organization and flexibility you can't go wrong with the white modular cubes at Home Depot, Lowes and WalMart. You can move them around, get some with doors and some that are open. I like the cube ones but there are other shapes too. You can add photos to the doors with Handi Tak or just leave them plain. They are also reasonably priced and you will always be able to reuse them in another room or closet or whatever. I have found them to be pretty indestructible.
For vintage photos--try a search of your city or state or area of interest on eBay and save copies of the postcards and other ephemera to your computer. You can print them out and use for decoupage or frame them. If you want them to be black and white just change them in a photo editing program. Most old postcards are Public Domain now so no copywrite infringement problems anymore.

Too many accent colors. I would pick just two of the five colors, especially if you're using black and white photos for a theme. Remember you can vary the colors by using different shades of your two accent colors.
The best thing to do is keep it simple. Choose just two or three really great pieces you find. My neighbor just gave me a working strereo console from 1964 and just that alone is a conversation piece!
Go through your room and start your own "Clean Sweep' and get rid of what you don't need or truly love. That helps with clutter right there.
Dollar stores have black plastic organizers. This will match your photos. You want your colors and shades to tie together so it 'makes sense'.

I live in Tucson, too, and I'd recommend shopping around Grant - not for the high priced vintage items - but for ideas. You'll see alot of great boutique vintage shops there. Then hit the thrift stores and also on the web. Sometimes just keeping in mind the colors you want helps simplify things. Or sometimes looking specifically for items (drapes, bedspread, a night table, etc.) can help.
Another idea is to look at decorating magazines. Cottage, victorian and retro are all big right now and intage can be any of these depending on what time period you're looking for.
