My House Reeks of Skunk Odor

How do you get the skunk odor out of your home? My dog was sprayed last night, all of our clothes and the house has the smell of skunk.

RE: My House Reeks of Skunk Odor

I've lived in my house for two years and, I tell you, this skunk can't be caught. My kids think I had to trash them. Me and my husband got new beds for all, Trash. I don't know what to do. Nothing works. I'm packing now to move. I think he is under my house. Animal control did what they could do. I just have to move. Having 8 kids and this skunk for two years, this is all I can take.

OMG! I have two cute and usually smart border collies. At 1 this morning I took them out to potty. The boy dog is taking care of business and all of the sudden he takes off running the girl dog runs after him. I ran after them yelling come back here. When I get to where I can see them, theres a skunk and my boy dog is shaking his head. He runs past me in through the garage and into the house. I took him out before he touched anything, but its to late. Everything stinks, my boyfriend is mad at me? and I was outside giving dogs baths in the rain at 1:45 AM. I washed the dogs with baking soda, peroxcide, and liquid hand soap. they smell better but I think one more will do the trick. Im trying the vinegar in the crock pot. I hope it works. Im tired!

By far the best product I have tried (and I have tried a LOT of them) has been from BioWorld Products. I came to this site a few weeks ago looking for a new product to try on my skunked pet and someone mentioned it. I gave it a change and was very pleased. Other products and remedies worked okay but they never completely got rid of the skunk smell. This product did! The thing I like most about it though is that you really can use in on just about EVERYTHING! I still use it around my house even though I got rid of the skunk odor already just because it works so well and my house never stinks!

My dogs go outside every morning at 5. It just so happened this morning they got sprayed. It wasn't the first for Emma, but it was for Petey, and Maddie stayed away. How do I get the smell out?

RE: My House Reeks of Skunk Odor

Sounds like everyone else. Dog hears something, runs out the door, we hear a yelp, and a few minutes our dog Skeeda runs back into the house. His mouth foaming and bloody (don't know where the blood came from) and the first thing he does before we could stop it, is run his face on the carpet. So I have red streaks of stinky skunk smell on my carpet, and no idea what to do. I'm screaming "he's got rabies".

My boyfriend confused and distraught by the smell and my dad heaving and laughing at me screaming. We chase the dog outside, and I grab the resolve and spray onto the bloody mess. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum it up. We opened all the windows, and I got on the computer. I came to this site. I tried the vinegar and sprayed it onto the spots as well. Hopefully by morning it will be a little better. Until then we are going to stay at my mom's. Haha. Maybe someone else can tell me how to get it out of carpet and how to get blood out of carpet. Below is a picture of what he was doing afterward. He's ashamed. lol

We had our first encounter with the skunk problems and of course it was awful! We have two little min. pinschers and they both got sprayed early this morning and ran immed. for the bedroom. Baths were successful with dog shampoo and mouthwash. To help with the horrid house smell, we have been doing the coffee grounds, vinegar, along with the bleach/water spray bottle.

NOW CLOTHES: Time consumption...off the charts! If I knew someone to pay to come in...anyways, what we found works best is whatever kind of detergent you use, and about one can of coca-cola per load. (not coke one, pepsi, etc...real coca-cola). We add fabric softener, too. It's a LONG process, but a good combo...(someone suggested the coke further up and we followed that...)

I live in the house with the cloud around it

My dog got sprayed the other night and decided to wipe the skunk oil on our carpet in the bedroom. Before we knew what was happening (1 am dead sleep) the damage was done (big time), what do you do? We had the carpets professionally cleaned, did the peroxide, bathed her numerous times. I'm thinking it has to go away in time. You can only disguise the smell and it gets less offensive each day. Boy, is this some mean stuff!

My Beagle was outside and all of the sudden the worst stench ever come in the windows. It is like nothing I have ever smelled. I made the mistake of bringing her in the house and had her in the living room for 10 minutes before I figured out what to do.....BAD IDEA. I really wish I left her outside, but I didn't want her to get sprayed again. The smell in my house keeps me gagging. I am doing the coffee and vinegar but it is still terrible in my house. She actually doesn't smell bad anymore I got her in the tub and bathed her like 5 times.

My dog got skunked a few weeks ago and she also go into my house. I used a product called BON-CC-41 from BioWorld Products. It worked great. I washed my dog with the product and then I added a little to a rented carpet shampooer I got and it took care of ALL the smells. I also added it to my laundry which was a tip they gave me and it worked really well. I had tried all the other methods but NOTHING worked. It helped to reduce the smell so I can stand it until I got the product. It had to be delivered from California but they sent it out the same day. The people that work there are really great! I have never gotten such great customer service. They really know what they are talking about. Thats why I am recommending them.

Can someone please explain what the vinegar method and the coffee ground method is. I really need to know exactly what to do to get the smell of skunk out of my carpets and else where. Does banking soda work too?

Oh gosh. I have a very unhappy whining 85lb, 3 legged dog on the porch. I wont let her in until the husband gets home from the nearest store (1 1/2 RT!) our whole house smells and I know she does. And we are suddenly missing a cat too. I have a long night ahead. Ive got the coffee in the bowls. Vinegar in bowls. Made a pot of coffee (for scent and drinking)and have a potpourri of cinnamon and cloves too. Come on with the peroxide!
my eyes are burning. and yes, it smells like burn balloons right now. ugh...

RE: My House Reeks of Skunk Odor

I found that spraying a mixture of bleach and water into the air neutralizes the skunk smell, this also works outside around the house. This is cheaper than peroxide and baking soda and works.

OMG, we got skunked last night. Tomato juice helped the dog who got sprayed but the rest of the house is so gross. It still hasn't gone to that "well known" skunk smell. We got some "nature's miracle skunk odor remover" but we soaked the carpets in the rooms that stank and we have to let it dry. So far it's no good. I'm going to try the coffee grounds and some other things you all have mentioned. I'm so glad this site is here, thank you everyone for your suggestions :)

Just got sprayed last night

The smell is awful. I didn't know that initially skunk smell doesn't smell like the scent you are use to. It actually smells like burnt balloons. Then, after a few hours it turns into that smell we can all identify as being from a skunk!

I bathed my dogs in 1 qt hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and two squirts of soft soap. It did the trick and they smell fine. But the house is horrific. I read on a site that you should put dryer sheets on your furnace filter if you are getting the smell every time the heat comes on. I've baked a sheet of cinnamon so far and it worked wonders in the kitchen, but the rest of the house is still gross.

RE: My House Reeks of Skunk Odor

My dog got hit for the first time just 3 hours ago. She's all cleaned up and I have a pot of water and cinnamon sticks boiling on the stove. it's dispersing the smell in the kitchen anyway but the rest of the rooms still stink. I'm hoping they will get better as the day goes on.
I also plugged in my coffee maker in the room that smells the worst and brewed a pot of really strong coffee, that's helping too.
I used water & dog shampoo on my dog and then my parents brought over a commercial leave-in oil called Skunk Off, which they had from the last time their dog was sprayed. You can use it on dogs/cats, clothes, carpets, people, it worked really well - I wish I had bought some "just in case" before this happened.

Call a local wildlife rehab group, your fish and game department and a professional exterminator -- one of them will probably know how to eliminate the odor.

RE: My House Reeks of Skunk Odor

My dog got skunked a few days ago. She did not get inside but our house smelled horrible as the incident took place about 5 feet from the back door. It smelled horrifying. We boiled vinegar and cinnamon and that really helped get rid of some of the odors. We put cinnamon/coffee grounds/nutmeg on a cookie sheet, baked at 250 degrees and let the smell fill our home. We also placed bowls of coffee grounds in every single room of the house and a bowl of vinegar in the most smelly rooms. The next morning the smell was SO much better. it really helped. We also used "Oust" odor remover, but really I thiink the coffee and vinegar was the best absorber. For some reason my purse smells the worst and I cant get rid of it there, but I'm putting a brown bag of coffee grounds in it tonight!

I have heard to use tomato juice for getting rid of the odor. Bathe the dog with it. You might check with a vet for more tips.

RE: My House Reeks of Skunk Odor

Buy lots of inexpensive ground coffee. Put bowls of it around the house for several days; close rooms where you can. Since opening your house up to air is not a good possibility at the moment, the coffee and charcoal might be your best bets! Febreeze, too!

RE: My House Reeks of Skunk Odor

I feel so badly for you! I'll give you several ideas: (Ozone Machines, Coca-Cola, Vinegar & Fabrize) to get the smell out of your clothes & home. We had a house fire some years back & the pros suggested using 1 can of REGULAR Coca-Cola (not sugerless & NOT Pepsi) added to a regular sized load of laundry (w/laundry soap). The results TOTALLY AMAZED me! ... The Coca-Cola removed all traces of the smoke smell from even the worse smelling draperies, throw rugs & clothing... If it removes the smell of smoke, maybe it will work equally well with Skunk.

White Vinegar (or ANY vinegar) it works amazingly well at removing any & all odors from anywhere, it even removes fried-fish odors! You might try putting the Vinegar in a spray bottle with just a bit of water added & spraying it around the places your dog went in your home. I believe the reason they told us to wash our pets in Tomato Juice in the old days was the "Acidity" of the Tomato juice & we all know that Vinegar is FULL of acidity! You may want to try adding vinegar to your wash if the Coke doesn't work.

ALSO: If you just Google "Skunk" on the web, you'll find countless professional products you can buy to remove the smell. If it were me, I'd finish off the whole thing by spraying Febreze all over the house!

---> One of the best things that happened after the smoke (from the house fire) had taken over our whole house was that the Pros brought in an "OZONE MACHINE" (you can rent one). This Ozone machine removed any & all traces of smoke smell from the whole house in just 2 days. Be careful thought, as Ozone machines can remove oxygen from the air, so you shouldn't be in the same room as one that's running, but call the rental places in your area & check this option out, You won't regret it!
