Decorating A High School Dance With A Winter Theme

I'm on student congress and it is my responsibility this year to design the Winterfest dance at our high school. Well, since pretty much every idea has already been taken by previous classes, I am stumped, and the dance is just around the corner. The theme is Winter, and I would greatly appreciate it if you gave me some tips on how we could decorate the halls/cafeteria/and commons. Thank You.

Hey guys I am pretty much in the same boat and I'm running out of ideas but a great website that helps is called shindigz.com they have themed balloons with snowflake patters and there really neat. I ordered a bunch for our school. They also have really cheap gossamer. I saw a picture of pillars and the idea is great I kinda just stole it from them but it helps.

Best of luck to all I know how stressful decorations can be. Laura!

RE: Decorating A High School Dance With A Winter Theme

I am a 35 yr. old mom with five little children and I decorate for a lot of youth activities. I actually have a Senior from my church coming over today for ideas for their Homecoming. I saw your post so I just thought I would respond.

For a winter theme you could do white batting from the fabric store (comes in rolls) for snow. A inexpensive way to add drama is rolls of vinyl table covering that you get at a party store. You can get it in any color on big rolls from about $13.00 - $16.00 per roll and it looks like
fabric when you drape it (and it goes a long ways).

You could do whites, silvers, soft blues. Paper lanterns (they take batteries) could be hung from ceilings and they start at $2.50 per lantern. You could mix snowflakes among the lanterns.

If you want to go inexpensive you could hang snowflakes around with glitter on them, just hang them from fish wire. Something that would be cool is hang strands of lights from ceiling straight down through out the gym. Most people would let you borrow them from their christmas decor. You could cut branches from trees that don't have leaves and use plaster from the hardware store and find some inexpensive pots and put the branches in pots and cove branches with lights. You could also paint the branches white for a real white winter look.

Hopefully some of these ideas helped. If you need any more ideas I could think of some more. Good Luck!

I think you should make posters for all over the hall ways. I also think that you should go to thrift shops and find all these tacky things for a winter theme. Any thing could work since it is cheap.

RE: Decorating A High School Dance With A Winter Theme

Hey guys. Our student council does a WinterBall every year. And as president I am the one who does just about everything for it! We fist start with our colors. This year we are doing blue, purple and white. We put white icicle lights on our bleachers in our gym and then over them with white fabric. It always looks great! Then on the other two bleachers we loop dark blue fabric and have silver spray painted wreaths in the middle. That looks great too and its pretty cheep (other then all the fabric costs) Then we set up table with table covers and have flower in glass vases in the middle. Then candles around the flowers and glider on the tables. We also hang stars from the ceiling of the gym with some help. It always looks great. Just make sure you have lots of help and plan way ahead so your all ready to do day of. Best of luck everyone! peaceee

RE: Decorating A High School Dance With A Winter Theme

Hello!
I am a freshman in high school and we just got done with our Winter Formal. Our high school schedule is that the sophomores have to set-up the Winter Formal for this year. Well, this year they did a bad job. To make yours better, my tips are:
1. Don't have the decorations too dark, no one wants to be depressed while at a formal dance.
2. Have a casual theme like: Winter in Times Square or Winter in London, or something casual and classy.
3. Stick with warm colors for decorations: blue and white I think work the best!
4. Have a lot of hanging balloons and archways-they are cheap and fun!
5. Don't have black-out or white-out for a dance, if you have a tight time limit. The hardest thing to do is find a dress based on the theme of the dance. If you already have a black-out or white-out dance, post-it and advertise it soon. The sooner is better!
6. Have lots of people help and make the best out of it! I hope I was helpful!

RE: Decorating A High School Dance With A Winter Theme

I went on line and printed off snowflake templates and had people cut them out, we had about 3000 I then hung 2-3 on one long string of fishing line and tacked them to the ceiling at varying lengths. So it looks like its snowing. I also got beanbag filler (tiny little polystyrene balls) and covered the floor with it and sheets of cotton wool to look like snow and put that around door ways tables etc.
we had loads to artificial trees colored in snow, I also sprayed snow on the windows. We also had Christmas wreaths everywhere. We strung bean bag filler balls together like a necklace onto fishing line, and hung them from the ceiling too. We had a ball, and it is so cheap.

Try these beautiful paper snowflakes. We sprayed them with white glitter, made huge mobiles, hung them from balloons, etc. and the room looked like a winter wonderland. At $15 for 50 9" snowflakes...you can't beat the price:

I think that lots of snowflakes and a great Dj will really help you with a balloon archway as soon as you walk in the doors that would look really good!

In order to raise money, our student council has guys and girls sign up to run for Mr. and Mrs. Merry Christmas. The boy and girl who collect the most money are crowned at the Winter Formal. Last year we raised over $1000 from this, not including ticket sales.

Decorating A Winter Wonderland!

Hey! I NEED help badly on decorating our winter wonderland them! if anyone has any ideas it would be GREAT! i also have a few ideas for a x-mas or icy formal, you could have an Ice king and Ice queen, make the floor out of plexiglass or something shinny to make it look like ice, a walkway or archway made of lights, icicles, or baloons, an ice sculpture where you are having your supper, have winter songs such as ice ice baby-vanilla ice, 12 days of christmas-beyonce, make a little hut thing made of icecubes (plastic ones!) and sell snow cones or slush drinks there and call it the north pole or something!, hang snowflakes made of paper from the cealing, have booths to take photos and paint murals on big sheets of paper to put on the wall for display, you could have a sled to sit in and get your pictures taken with santa and charge a buck or two for each picture !?! well lets all my ideas :P! if you have any others please add them! Thankyou !

Our Spirit Council is having a Semi-Formal dance before Christmas and to decorate we're getting helium filled balloons and attaching long strings with tin foil stars at the end and letting the balloons float to the cieling and so the stars will hang down!! And we're going to have a balloon drop in the middle of the cieling to drop about 100 balloons in the middle of the dance!! In the entry way we're going to make a skating pond scene and having stars and lights everywhere!!

Hey everyone! I was reading all of this. It's all so interesting. I have an assignment, for a final, in my leadership class. We have to create a dance, from start to finish. We have to plan everything and stuff. I got some ideas from here. Incase anyone wants a different winter name you can use Peppermint Paradise. Another idea is a circus theme. It's a reallly good idea, have like popcorn and cotton candy machines. One thing you shouldn't ever do is a space dance, its a total bomb. it stinks. well yes, I am planning a fake dance and Im not sure what I want to do, b.c I want this dance to actually be able to use. So I am thinking about doing a Valentine one, the only thing is, it cannot be formal. so I need help

RE: Decorating A High School Dance With A Winter Theme

We as well are having a "Snow Ball" for sadies. If your council has money, go to Stumps, it's a decoration place to buy stuff from and they have a ton of winter decor. For our dance we are getting fog machines for the dance floor so its like dancing in the snow. also lights on the floor is a BAD IDEA. Students step on it and with girls going barefoot, it gets ugly. We also have connections with ice sculpting companies who are making us large ice snowmen for blockades. Have a day where your council just cuts out snowflakes, you will need lots of them and making them yourself with paper saves money. If you have high ceilings, try draping it out of reach from the ceiling. You can use dowel rods to drap it over, it makes the ceiling lower and a little more homey. You can use that plastic table cloth which is cheap. Another thing we have learned is less is more. Don't waste time on small projects students wont see but big things everyone will be amazed by.

Christmas Themed Dance

My school is already having a "Snowball" in January. We'd like to have a Christmas themed dance. I'm trying to think of decorations...All I can come up with is a christmas tree, christmas lights...
Our school likes to have contests too, but no costumes are allowed...I was thinking the winners could be named Mr. and Mrs. Clause or something..? Maybe the contest could be the ones wearing the most festive attire, most green and red..?? I don't know, but I want it to be an all out Christmas theme! If anyone has any ideas please post. Thanks! -Mel

I'm doing a fundraiser for a camp that works with kids from bad neighborhoods and foster homes. We're considering putting together a winter dance and inviting a bunch of different schools to participate. The only problem is, we have to basicly work on donations. Any ideas on how to decorate on a teeny tiny budget?

Hi there, I'm in 8th grade in the middle of nowhere and im class rep. We are prolly having a winter formal, dresses and all, and 8th graders would love that because they changed the graduation this year so we arnt all fancy and 8th graders really wanted that. I would love to hear how to decorate the "Winter Ball" so its like amazing but my school isnt very rich. We are also using the money as a fundraiser. I would love snowflakes and my two student council teachers that help with it were thinking of a balloon archway. And also there might be like King and Queen, i would like good names for them too, and a good title for the dance. Includes ball cause that gives it a cool ring to it.

Italian vineyard theme for Winter Formal

Our SC is sick of boring winter dance themes, so this year we're spicing it up with An Italian Themed Dance. First of all, we need a slogan for this dance, any ideas? Secondly, I need decorating ideas! This dance used to be called the Christmas Dance...but we ran out of ideas so now it is held in January. Now this isn't just any normal dance, this dance is just as big as prom at my school, and all grades can attend. So it needs to be big! Please Please Please post some ideas for me!!!!!!!

RE: Decorating A High School Dance With A Winter Theme

you could decorate the main dance floor as an ice rink. blue lights, pictures of people as if they're looking over the gaurdrail and a little "booth" where there's a picture of someone distributing ice skates. Or there's "the north pole". W/ polar bears, penguins, and other little winter creatures. Its pretty much a good idea for the more relaxed scene of a cafeteria, or dining area. Still looking for winter wonderland/blackout ideas...still hated by the rest of student council...still up to me to save the school from banality. *sigh* Oh well. I can handle it. After the next student council meeting, I'm gonna talk to my class about the dance. Even though it is in mid-December, it will creep up on us fast. I think we will use blacklights, white snowflakes, blue white & green glowsticks, white streamers. I need some help with ideas for food & drinks. we had our first annual winter ball this year and it was a great success we made it semi formal so no jeans. our dj was great we got him at a discount and we had some seasonal music mixed with a lot of music that kids normally listen to. Tables were set with blue and white tablecloths and christmas cookies. we had blue glow bracelets tons of christmas lights and tons and tons of tinsel and fake snow sprinkled all over the floor. yea it made a mess but it looked great. we found plastic snowflakes at the dollar store and hung them everywhere along with the usual crape paper. everything was blue and white. our king and queen crowns were made out of that christmas wire with stars coming off of it and garland. lots of fake snow really helps get the message across.

Ice Castle Decor for Snowball dance.

So I'm dance decorations head on Student COuncil at my highschool and I need some decorating Ideas for our Ice Castle themed winter dance. The idea is all icy and sparkly, we have tons of white lights and snowflakes does anyone have any inexpensive ice themed ideas? The Ice lantern idea is great but Candles are definately not an option ( we have more thana few pyrostudents) I was hoping to make a ton of like *icecubes or bricks* from plastic and then put lights behind them but im not sure how plexyglass is too expensive and hard to manage for this. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Our Drama Club is having their annual Ice Castles dance, and it has a Winter theme with it. I'm the President and it's driving me insane. I'd like to find a place that will send you an inexpensive kit full of everything you would need to decorate with. We're thinking of hanging some kind of fabric around the gym to (hopefully) "transform" it into a different place. Of course, there will be plenty of paper snowflakes (I think the art class is helping out with making those) and maybe even glitter, even though it is horrible stuff to clean up. We'll probably have a lot of balloons in our theme colors. I don't really know, but I think we decided on lavender, silver, white. I say brown, but nobody likes that color. lol jk Anyway, I need to know how to make a balloon arch for pictures. Supposively, my STUCO rep says she knows how, but I just want to be safe.

RE: Decorating A High School Dance With A Winter Theme

This is more of a decorating idea. You can make Ice Lanterns from Ice cream buckets. Fill the ice cream buckets full of water and place in the freezer. You can put pine branches and such in there also to add to the decor. You will need to freeze them for 12-15 hrs.. Place them in a deep freeze with the lids on. When the 12-15 hrs have passed, open the lid and punch a hole in the top of the ice and drain out the excess water. The water should have frozen to the sides of the bucket and the bottom. Carefully carve out a opening on the top. Let sit for a bit on the counter top and take out of the ice cream bucket. These will need to be placed in the freezer to "cure" for at least 24 hrs.
If you live in a cold climate these are nice to line the walkway up to the door. Place a candle in each one and light. These can be place indoors for decorations also. You will need to place them on a tray or cookie sheet to catch the water. You can also use disposible diapers under each of the lanterns on top of the cookie sheet to catch the water. COver the diapers or cookie sheets with shredded paper and VOLIA! A unique and inexpensive decoration!
