Painting An Area Rug

Recently watching Sensible Chic on HGTV, I saw where they "painted" a beige area rug with red paint to form a checkerboard pattern. They didn't say how it was done, but the rug looked great on the TV. Is this really doable and if so, what kind of paint would be used? Their rug was at least 5 x 8 and they indicated they used spray paint. Has anyone ever tried this --if so, I would like to know how it was done.

You can go to Michaels and buy a pretreated floor cloth. This way when you take it out of the package its ready to be painted using acrylic paint, stencils and/or rubber stamps. If you choose to buy this floorcloth, there is a website on the package you can go to for complete instructions.

You can paint the rug directly on the floor......tape off your area and the design inside the rug can be taped in sections.....let one color dry before taping for 2nd color.
I have used plain heavy canvas for floor rugs..gesso the canvas well before painting....checker board would be easy to mark out and paint. Paint the lightest color all over and mask off and paint only the darker squares for your checker board......plan out any borders first and add last to the design( it can clean up lines that are not real straight and cover mistakes near the edge) you should have turned under a hem and sewn or glued first for a neat finished edge. finish with several coats of clear varnish to make cleaning soil from the floor cloth much easier.

in the "Crafts 'n' Things magazine for October 2006 they have a whole craft section on making handmade rugs, including painting
