My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

Help - my 3 yo daughter keeps getting bitten, in the house, sometimes at night, sometimes during the day, by unseen, unknown bugs! They are very red, and INCREDIBLY itchy. She is miserable, and as she itches, the bites becomes huge lumps and welts, and even sometimes have a red ring around them. She will get 8 to 10 at a time. First, how do I help her itching, and secondly, how do I get rid of any bugs in the house? What can I use that is a natural product? We are very conscious of chemicals and pesticides and don't want the effects of those around our daughter either!
Any help would be very much appreciated!!!
Beth :)

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

I am still not quite sure what has been biting me. First I start to itch all over my head (histamine reaction?) then the welt..mostly on my hairline on the back..the side of my face, neck and sometimes my shoulders. What has worked the best for me is a product called AFTER BITE, within seconds I get relief and the welt never gets worse and/or goes away.
No one else I know has been bitten. I live in Central Oregon. I have noticed that it almost always happens at night and when we have had rain or light snow. So far from what I have researched, it is looking like it is some sort of mite.

Have you tried Avon bath oil spray (original scent)? I heard it can prevent bug bites.

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

I don't think it is bed bugs, chiggers or fleas. I have the same problem. I wake up with the same type of marks in the morning, I have also gotten them at work. I check all the matresses and such around the house, there are no bugs. I have washed clothes and sheets and that didn't help either. My mom is absolutely fine, as is our pets (who are indoor cats who never been outside, and have no fleas on them and they aren't scratching). Its really freaking me out.

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

My dad is also having this problem, it started after we thoughts that my cat had fleas and we put a flea collar on him. Perhaps these bugs are biting so they can take over the world!

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

I don't believe that this is bedbugs. You should know if it is by checking the edge of the mattress. If there is no spots then it wont be bedbugs. We have the same problem and the doctor ruled out bedbugs, scabies and lice. instead they think we are crazy! For some relief we used sulfur soap. It seemed to get rid of them, but they just came back today, and we can't tell if they repopulated or are just angry at dying. Hopefully it is the last choice!

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

My wife and I have had this for 2 years and after intense research we think it is springtail mites (collembola) gone bad. They can jump like a flea and move fast and they do parasite people. Go to shanspirations.org and follow their advice. They never identified the bug but got rid of them anyway. I'LL give you a heads up, diet helps also. I'm talking about the kind of diet that you get on if you have cancer - NO SUGAR, NO SUGAR SUBSTITUTES, NO CHOCOLATE, NO BREAD, NO STARCHES. You have to change the ph of your body to the same as other people who can go into the worst infested areas and not be bothered. MOST people aren't bothered by these bugs but a few are-that few may be in the thousands but is still small compared to the total population who have a good ph and can eat anything and still not be bothered. If you don't want to change your diet-at least change a little like I did and PRAY. Even if you get rid of these things, if you don't change your diet you'll just get them again because they are everywhere. They have existed as long as the earth has and there are thousands in the soil on even a small piece of land. They are organic eaters-beneficial to the soil and they like mold and mildew.

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

It might not be bed bugs or fleas. There is a new kind of mite in America that can live off of humans. Doctors have little knowledge of mites and their are thousands of people suffering from these things now. They are very difficult to get rid of, but if you go to this web site you can read the story of someone who was successful at getting rid of them and how they did it. Pay close attention to the IGR called Nylar. It has made a tremendous difference in my family since we got the mites. The web site is :www.shanspirations.org

Bitten by unknown/unseen bugs

Within the past couple days I have been bit by something approximately 13 times on the leg, foot, arms, back, chest, and back of neck. They are extremely large, red and itchy and seem to appear overnight, but I have also had a couple appear while at work. It's really strange and unnerving. As far as bed bugs or fleas, my husband has not been bothered at all. It's really beginning to irritate me. It's really gross! Any suggestions?

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

This definitely sounds like bedbugs to me! I had an infestation several years ago. Now hears the thing. They can live in tiny crevices and corners or even your plug sockets. They are notoriously hard to get rid of. Its not just your bedding that needs to be cleaned, I would advise cleaning every piece of fabric in the room as they can hide almost anywhere.

Your whole house has to be fumigated by a professional and your carpets cannot be vacuumed for 6 weeks! This is important as the poison which is laid down continues to work.

The other important thing about bedbugs is that they are nocturnal insects, you will struggle to find them during the day but a good thing to look out for is tiny dark dots clustered on the mattress usually at the head area and on the side and underside, if you do find clusters of dark dots this may be droppings.

Bedbugs will NOT come out if there is no one in the bed so keeping your daughter out of her bed will have no effect. This is because they can sense the carbon monoxide that we breathe out. This acts as a homing signal for them, almost like a dinner bell! Although its not very pleasant it is better to let your daughter go to bed as usual and don't say anything to alarm her. When she has been asleep for about an hour go in with a torch and gently pull back the covers, check all around her and especially under the pillows. You must be very thorough when doing so as they move quite quickly. I hope this helps x

It's Chigger Bugs! They get on you out in the grass. The bite marks don't actually show up until a day or two after you got bit.

My husband are having the same problem. It started a few days after we moved into a new apartment. Our daughters don't have any bites. We don't have any pets. I have searched our bed can't find anything. Usually you will see fleas. Once in a while it happens during the day. We have borax all over the floors. I used zodiac witch is a great thing. Washed everything. Nothing works. I swell really bad. My husband just has bite marks. I have taken bendrell all kinds of creams. Please someone if you can help email me at dontsweat AT yahoo.com Thank you.

I have these same bites and they are on my stomach and chest area, they itch severely I've tried caladryl, benadryl, campho phenic and nothing has worked. It's not bed bugs because my husband doesn't have these bites. The clear finger nail polish doesn't work either. Please help find a cure to get rid of these itchy bumps.

I found a bug that I've never seen before in my bed. It has a really long tail with long antennas. It's blackish brown with a whitish cream bottom and little short legs. Does anyone have an idea what that is?

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

It may be fleas or Bed bugs, fleas will bite all day and bed bugs only at nite. The bite itch is very intense from both, the flea bite will heal quite fast. bed bug bite marks will stay for months and appear dark. Remember there are diseases that can be passed through infestation of either,
consult with your doctor. Good Luck

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

I was wondering if it could be spiders? I have had similar episodes and the next day turned the furniture stand next to the bed upside down. There were fine webs and small, long legged spiders. I have also swept all the areas under each piece in the room, windows, bookcases, etc. Tea tree oil soothes these bites. Perhaps you could try spraying a solution of the oil mixed with some water on the bed linens. I know this keeps insects in motels from being bothersome whenever we have traveled. I know how important it is to use nontoxic agents. I use nothing but in our home because my body reacts to others. I would never use bleach or nail polish directly on the skin. In less than 30 minutes those enter every organ through your skin. I never knew this information but actually have seen my health improve by ridding them from use. That's why transdermal patches are used for quit smoking, nausea, hormone replacement, etc.

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

I have been getting similar bites all my ankles and legs. They occur at night. After all of the articles I have read and researched, it seems like they are either bed bugs or chiggers. After work, I am going to wash all of my bedding, clothes, and vacuum everything in my room. I will follow up with the results. For the meantime, I would suggest using an antithistamine for the itching.

Hi - you have bed bugs, they only come out at night and live in the crevices of either your walls and ceilings and the matresses - you need to check every crack, corner - even the ceiling to get rid.

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

i have the same exact thing. I strongly think they are beg bugs. Dont let your daughter sleep in her bed tonight. And at like 8 or 9 o clock at night go in her room with a flash light and you would be able to see them crawling on her bed if they are bed bugs. What you need to do is buy Bug Out. Use the three cans in her room.Take the sheets pillow cases spreed then box spring and the mattress apart . Then leave the bottles in there for at least two days. Then move her whole room around clean the floor all the clothes that were in her room her closet absolutly everything in their put new sheets on her bed and everything should be ok.

Goodluck.
Hope everything works out good

They are actually bugs living in your skin.
The only was to kill them is CLEAR NAIL POLISH.
It smothers them.Or campho Phenique
Stops bug bite itching fast

RE: Get Prenizone

After scratching for two weeks, I finally went to the doctor for little red spots/bites around my ankle. My doctor believed it was bug bites (I think it was chiggers). She prescribed Prenizone (spelling?) and it started to clear up in 2 days. Don't suffer. Go to your doctor. And the medication is very inexpensive. I paid around $3.00 for a week's prescription.

If you can't make it to the doctor, fingernail polish seems to work also. Just dab a little bit on and use the blowdryer at the highest heat you can stand. It will really help to take the itch away.

Hi! I am reading everyone's feedback and advice. I also seem to have bites/rash. It started on the front of my knees I found it when I woke up an took a shower -and itched it. Well it went away and came back about a week later on my knees again and the backs of my arms. Strange - I know! Then now it seems to be spreading to the forearms and chest - little patchs on my left side mid-section. I have been to 3 doctors. All have given me seperate diagnosis. One thought that it was Scabies but I have nothing between my fingers/toes/armpits....so that was ruled out. One thougth it was folliculitis (sp) which is AKA: barber rash. Two just thinks that is an allergic reaction. I have cleaned my house - vacuumed-steam cleaned-bleached! Flea bombed...everything. Nobody seems to know. I just want to know what i have - and it is getting very EXPENSIVE!

Are you sure it isn't eczema verses bug bites?

My daughter (about 7th grade at the time) was treated for scabies with that lotion stuff and ended up in the ER. They treated me like a neglectful parent (even though our pediatrician is the one that misdiagnosed it). Turned out she had eczema and because it was on her stomach I never saw it and she never told me until it was to the point of infantigo (sp?).

If it IS bug bites however, and they are not huge open sores, you can put ammonia on them. This is what is used in those insect bite sticks. Sometimes they will burn (less than alcohol would) a bit and then you never itch again. I prefer mine to be open a little in order to let the ammonia get directly to it. The quicker the better.

To keep a child from scratching, put socks on their hands at night or mittens. Believe me, scratching causes bacteria to get in there hence the infantigo scenario I already had to experience.

bites from red bugs

I have found that you can put a little bleach directly on the red bug bite then wash it off and it seems to stop the bugs from biting. I would not suggest putting it in your head though because it will turn your hair white.

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

Here in rural california, in early summer, we get "no-see-ums." they are so tiny you can barely see them (hence the name). the ones who attack us live in grass or fields, but I think there are different kinds. Their bites are fierce! i'm fairly tolerant of insect bites and even I will itch like mad for several days; for my husband and kids -- they are really tortured. I've read it can be a serious problem for livestock because horses and cows will rub themselves raw trying to relieve the itch of these bites. The no-see-ums we get die out after we have a couple of 100 degree days in a row. For itch relief, we have had some success with product called "Olbas Oil." It doesn't say anything about stopping itches, it's a menthol-y inhalant, but the lady at the health food store recommended it and it seems to help. Also, we accidentally discovered that Tom's Baking Soda Toothpaste seems to help. (Before we tried the Olbas, I went stumbling in the night for the cortisone cream to put on my daughter, then in the morning I couldn't find my toothpaste!) also, when really desperate, we have tried benadryl too. At least it makes them so sleepy they can't scratch holes in themselves.

I also have little red tiny scratchy lumps on my skin it seems to happen when i go to bed and i notice the bites when i wake up. And still being only 14 i cant help but scratch which has made them even worse.Do you have any pets because i have a five month old kitten and since we put a flea collar on him it seems t drive them off of the kitten and on me . If u do have any pets then its probably fleas. My bites are all over and around my ankles since i started wearing socks to bed the bites get further and futher up my legs and seem to be getting worse.

Beth, I would take her to the doctor, preferably a dermatologist, to rule out underlying disease. I am a nurse, so, naturally this would be my recommendation. The red ring around the bite is particularly bothersome..................is she having any fever? swelling? flu-like symptoms? Is she active or is she tired alot? How is her appetite? Any diarrhea? any vomiting? If she has any of these symptoms let me know. :) Sincerely, Joni

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

Having her soak in a lukewarm bath with Aveeno oatmeal soak will help with the itching (ask at your pharmacy, no prescription needed, but it's a little pricey). You could also, more cheaply, dissolve baking soda into a lukewarm bath, that helps soothe itching, too. Believe it or not, making a paste of meat tenderizer and water, and applying it directly to the bites, can also soothe itching (it's what lifeguards use for jellyfish stings).

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

My elderly mother had the same problem. I discovered that a bird had built a nest in her air conditioner housing and it was blowing bird mites all through the house. They were eating her alive. They were barely visible. I scrubbed her from head to toe with a prescription dog shampoo for mites and fleas, set off insect bombs in the house, and removed the bird nest from the airconditioner. I bought a generic itch lotion that reminded me of aloe vera. If you have a bird in the house, it might be mites.

Put fingernail polish over the chigger bite. The head of a chigger lives under the skin. The nail polish smothers the chigger.

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

My first thought was bed bugs also and there's a way to get rid of them without chemicals - safe for pets and kids, too. Wash all the linens, pillows, loose rugs in the house. Then close up the rooms and leave only one window open in each room. Put fresh thyme in the corners of the rooms and on the furniture. I actually used dried herb and it worked fine.)

If it's bed bugs, they will be gone by the end of the day.

I would, however, take her to see a doctor. I rarely take my kids, but my son had something similar when he was about 7 and it was scabies which requires some serious topical stuff. He apparently got it at a sleepover.

Chiggers, by the way, will go away by themselves and need to live outdoors so it's unlikely that they are in the house. (if she's getting bitten at night...)

Whatever it is, she must be encouraged not to scratch. She'll prolong chiger infestation in the skin (they live in the bumps), spread the scabies, or otherwise infect the bites.

Also have your doctor check for ringworm if there's a red ring forming...

RE: My daughter is being bitten by unknown bugs!

My guess would be bed bugs. I've read a couple of recent articles stating that they're making a comeback. They're about lentil-sized and are reddish-brown. If that's what you have, do a search to find the best way to get rid of them; I know it involves washing & sterilizing all the bedding but I don't remember the particulars or the magazines where I read the article. Good luck.

Do you have a pet? It may be flea bites. They usually bite about 3 times in the same area. If you have carpet, put salt or Borax on the floor and around the baseboards. let it set ( overnight would be great ) then clean it up.Vacum your sofa and mattresses and chairs. Treat the pets with a good flea bath or behind the neck medication. Do this again in about 2 weeks as flea eggs will be hatching again. Try Calamine lotion on your child's bites and cool baths not warm or hot ones. Good luck!
