I know this is a house finch. Purple finches are much brighter red and a little darker, Finches like to eat black sunflower seeds, white millet and safflower.
If you'd like to coax goldfinches, put out some Nyjer Thistle seed.
Purple finches are not the same as house finches.

This is a male House Finch - Not a Purple Finch.

It does look like a purple finch but I don't see them as being in Utah:

Actually, the Purple Finch and the House Finch are 2 different species. They look very similar and this bird could be either! :)

If you can find a bird book, this bird could be a house finch, also known as a purple finch.
