Bleaching Colored Clothing White

This is probably a stupid question but I have a pink shirt that I would like to make white. How could I safely bleach it so the color would be even and white without making the fabric fall apart or become yellowish? The last time I tried to make colored clothes white the fabric fell apart. How can I safely bleach this shirt to make it white?

RE: Bleaching Colored Clothing White

I too bought several bright Yellow Tank tops that I want to dye to white and bought some Bleach but am afraid it would destroy the fabric. Could somebody suggest how I can do this safely and be happy with the result?
Thanks

I have a blue denim jacket. I want to bleach white, but bleaching weakens the material. Is there some other way to do this?

Dear Editor, Thanks for all the helpful feedback. I have a kind of off white heavy canvas outerwear jacket. What is the best way to whiten it?

Someone told me to use a cup of bleach with warm water in a bucket and then check it every half hour until i reach the desired effect and then rinse it thoroughly. The jacket is old and was sewn together with cotton thread and so I am concerned that the garment may fall apart.

I have an ivory suit and has a large coffee stain on the pants. can this suit be bleach or how can I remove the stain.

Editor's Note: It really depends on the material. Unless it is wool or silk, you could try oxiclean and it should take out the stain. I wouldn't try bleach unless you are sure it will be safe for that fabric.

RE: Bleaching Colored Clothing White

Need help. Want to bleach my black dress white. But it is satin and lace do you think bleach would take onto those materials. And how do I even begin with how to bleach it..in the washer...in the tub (someone said)...and what kind of bleach! No clue!!! I don't even mind if the dress went grey. Just not sure of where to begin. Please any help much appreciated.

Editor's Note: I would recommend getting some Rit color remover. I think you would have your best luck with that. I'm afraid that bleach would ruin the fabric, at least the amount it would take to turn a black dress white. Make sure you check the label to see what the dress is made from and read the directions on the package of color remover.

RE: Bleaching Colored Clothing White

Hi,
Some color is impossible to remove. I once had a dress that was hot pink and I didn't want that color. I tried to dye it dark green. The lace on the dress took the dye but the dress did not so I got some color remover. It took the dye out of the lace but not the dress. I think it was a type of polyester and there was just no way to change the color. This may be the problem you are having. Synthetic fabrics take dye and bleaching differently than cotton.

I used the color remover on a pink article of clothing but it did nothing. I'm still trying.

Try Ritz Color Remover. It's usually with the Ritz dye for fabrics in the supermarkets or try Wal-mart. I don't know if it will work, read the directions for information or call them. There is usually a phone number on the box or bottle.
