I have jet black hair and I am desperately trying to lighten it up, whether I streak it or dye it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really like to do it at home instead of a salon.

I have back hair and the color is fading. I used to be blonde and wanted a change so I went black. I now want to put highlights in my hair but I want intense red, will this look ok?

Hey! I have brown hair and dyed my hair many colors one being black and i wanted my hair lighter so i grew it out and added highlights along the way i lot of honey highlights and platinum blond.

GO TO A PROFESSIONAL! I did my own hair, I put Highlights in & now my hair is RED! Like the fire truck red!

Would the spray on highlight colors work for you? I see the small spray cans of gold, silver, bronze, auburn, blonde etc. at Sally's beauty supply and also at Walgreens. I'm often tempted to shock my kids or grandkids by spraying on a few audacious streaks of shocking color! I assume they'd wash out with the first shampoo.

Yes you can highlight black hair. First of all differently go to a professional salon. I think and I know the best hair color is Goldwell. I love this brand. I have tried everything, I believe it is the best. I right now have Black and Blue hair, you can't tell the blue like you would think. It's awesome. I also highlighted my dark hair with a natural blond. The contrast is awesome. I'm a man who loves dark hair, and I KNOW A LOT ABOUT HAIR. My natura color is medium brown, no one can tell that I dye it. I'm telling you Goldwell is the best.

I had jet black hair until I went to the Nick Arrojo Studio (He is on the show "What Not To Wear") in Manahattan New York.( on 180 Varick and King Street)(take the Number One Train to Houston Street and walk to King and Varick) They ( a woman by the name of Amy) did a fantastic job of highlighting and glazing my hair. I have received so many compliments from people on how nice my hair looks. They treat you so respectful and deliver excellent customer service. Nick also has a great line of hair products.

I Was Once Blonde And I Decided To Dye My Hair And Then After Experimenting With Different Browns I Dyed It Black And It's A Bugger To Get Out. I've Been To Hair Dresser's For Highlights And They Said They Couldn't Do Anything For Me..Any Suggestions?

I personally go to a beauty supply store and purchase L'oreal creme Excellence Permanent hair color and start bringing It up by degrees. I start with a dark blonde and work my way up to the lightest natural blonde available.The reason I use L'oreal Excellence Ceme Is you get a multitonal effect. ...You have to stay on top of the roots. You can then come back and foil with low-lights to camoflauge those pesky roots..WARNING..People with alot of red pigments In their hair should avoid these base colors...Golden colors,Beige & Ash,as this will only make the red worse, You're going for the blonde effects ..right...They have wonderful ladies there that are willing to gulde you In the right color direction. I do alot of color and safely & heavily highlight my hair. You will need a really good conditioner after the chemical process Is over and every time you shampoo. Remember..Your hair must be dirty to color or highlight. Clean to perm....Dirty to color or highlight....

A hair dresser told me to wash my hair(as shampoo) about every other day with Dawn, yes the dish washing soap. But once you do this you have to condition very well after, with a salon type conditioner.

Hi i'm actually having that same problem because i actually dyed my hair black and now i'm kind of stuck with it because everywhere i go they say they cannot do anything my hair is natural dirty blonde but because i used permanent color it looks like there's no turning back. i tried going in for highlights and they say it doesn't look good on black hair. :( good luck to you.

I would advise you to let a professional do it. I tried to save money by doing my own hair color & highlights at home . I ended up going to the salon when my hair turned green after applying color to my highlighted hair. Now I let the experts color my hair.

Since you have Jet black hair I would advise against highlighting your hair at home yourself. If your hair is colored jet black I would definately advise against it. I would consult a licensed hairstylist. if you do it your self you may end up with greenhair, orange hair, or even worse-no hair! Good Luck!

The ONLY way I have found to highlight dark hair is with bleach and I have had alot of different hair dressers try other ways, but I always get red unless I use bleach.
Yes, its a good idea to get it professionally done.

(The bleach is peroxide, not laundry bleach)

If you just want to jazz it up, you could use the cellophane color washes for dark hair - The burgundy color is nice - I have seen a lot of oriental hair with auburn streaks (from peroxide) which can be a nice look if that's what you are after. For a COLOR streak, you have to bleach out the original dark color and add the color (I used to know someone who had a magenta mustache & that's how he did it.)

I also would recommend that you have a professional do it. With the products available to non-professionals, you may get red or brassy streaks. Or if you go too light, you may end up looking like a skunk, if there is too much contrast between your regular dark hair and very light streaks.

Hi, just for the record I have been a hairdresser for 36 years. There is no easy way to highlight black hair. You can of course but it usually dosen't look "great" If you decide to go ahead get it done professionally! Find a beauty school if possible and ask for an advanced student! In the long run you will not save much by doing it yourself as the products you will buy will not be equal to the professional products. I realize it can be expensive but check around find the best deal and that dosen't necessarily mean cheapest! If you had lighter colored hair it would be easier and look better! Certain haircolors look better with certain highlights.There is no set color for all hair it can look harsh if not done correctly so as a professional check around for your 'Hair color experience"
