Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureBJR from Southern Colorado Feedback About This Post:RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI have had my microfiber loveseat for a couple years and it has been a shocker since day 1. I'm in warmer climate with central AC and heating so indoors it's typically dry. I'd like to run a wire to ground the frame of this thing to the house electrical system. I already fried a mouse I was using with my laptop-better the mouse than the laptop. The static guard hasn't really seemed to do much. Wonder if I can get money back from the power company if I hooked this loveseat into the power grid? :) Post by shocked RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureIsn't there a way to ground the furniture to allow the static to discharge? Post by danekurb RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI am having the same problem. When "jmcangemi82 " said to buy Static Guard, was he/she referring to the static guard that's used for clothing? Post by D. Cooley RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
The static is generated by you as you sit-move-leave the couch. Several factors come into play:- Post by JohnGee RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
I just received my new microfiber latte couches and they are Full of static. So I go online to this website and looked up everyone's tips. The only tip that works, go to CVS, Target Walmart WHATEVER and Buy Static Guard and a humidifier. This works. I loaded my couches with static guard and turned my humifier on. First off the static guard not only helps with the static BUT it also helps "stain proof" your couches. This is the best advice i ever got . thank you. Post by jmcangemi82 RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI have a Microfiber couch also. The static electricity is nuts. I have a laptop on my coffee table with headphones. Once time I had my headset on and my entire headset was zapping over and over. It felt like I was in an electric chair. Post By Shaun D. (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI bought a microfiber couch and recliner and started having this problem tonight b/c the humidity is so low tonight. It was funny at first. We turned all the lights off and rolled around on the couch. I forgot about the static and went to kiss my wife..KABOOM! it shocked us so bad. I will try the water and fabric softner. Thanks Post By Jordan (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureMy goodness gracious, I was having a bad day. My wife is mad at me for buying these things for here and they were supposed to be a nice valentines present, but our living room set has become a nightmare. I am glad to see so many options to fix the problem, I almost got the couch she was so upset. She has long hair as does my daughter. I am hoping something works soon because I need not sleep on it if it does not. Post By gord (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureThis is crazy! I just got this furniture yesterday! When I went and sat on it in the store, there was nothing. But when it entered my home, it was full of static. I cannot stand it! My children and myself all 3 have the flu and I'm sure they don't like being zapped on the head every time I go to check on their temperature. I will be buying some dryer sheets or something to try to eliminate this problem! Thanks everyone! Post By Stefanie (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureThis is actually hysterical and somewhat scary! I had to google search this problem. I cant believe this is so common. I just fried an electric socket in my house and have to call an electrician. This can't really be healthy for people. I saw 5 blue electric currents coming out of my hand. Post By Chris S (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureOMG! this is kinda funny! My boyfriend just bought a new couch and the static electricity is out of control! We bought the static guard and that seemd to do the trick. Last night we were static free! But we'll see how long it lasts! We will also try rubbing a dryer sheet all over it and if all else fails, the water with softner sounds good. We'll try anything! Post By Michelle (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureJust tried the FS/h20 in a spray bottle. I will let you'll know if it works! Post By Matt (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
Wow! I have the exact same problem. New Microfiber sofa and so full of static electricity that I have to have someone else turn the lights off for me to keep from being shocked. Its awful! And I have two dogs and a cat that are not happy either. I tried Static Guard but it does not really work. Post by kallyc RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI am concerned that the fabric softener or static guard will leave spots/marks on the furniture. Ours is called latte and it is a medium brown color. Anyone have any suggestions? Post By Bonnie (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI bought some non microfiber/microsuede furniture from LaZ Boy and it also has a ton of static. It drifts onto my clothes, my hair, my electronics, light switches, EVERYTHING. I have a humidifier that I run in the evenings, which isn't working out. I'm surprised there hasn't been some sort of letter sent out to recent furniture buyers at least to warn us of this deficiency. There absolutely must be some new materials they are using to cause all this static. I'm going to try the spray before going to bed nightly, and hopefully that'll work out for me. Post By Jessica (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureWell, I am happy to report that the water bottle with a mixture of fabric softener and water is working for us. We have a wood stove so the air is DRY. I spritz it when I know we won't be sitting on it and it is working. Sure hope the problem isn't a year round thing. Time will tell. Post By Sandy (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureWe are also having the same problem we bought a sectional that is full of static. My husband and I cant even touch each other with out shocking each other. I already tried the fabric sheets that only lasted a few hours and the humidifer didnt help. Im going to the seller tommorrow with a copy of everyones statments. See what they have to say then about this not being a issue. Good Luck Everyone! Post By Enter your name. (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI finally decided to do some research on static because of our couch and can't believe the amount of people dealing with this. My son and husband play shock games to see how big of an arch they can get between fingers. My hair is stuck to my face! I cannot take this much longer. I will do the water bottle tonight. Post By Naomi (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
Oh, man I didn't know so many people had this problem. This is insane! But I can't take back my furniture, so I'm stuck with this choice. Post By Raven (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI figured I wasn't the only one with this problem, but I had no idea how widespread it is! We have had problems similar to the game controllers being killed by the static. Since we have had these couches, two microwaves and now a DVD player have shorted out. Our cordless phones have to be "reset" constantly, since we get up from the couch to answer the phone and the static discharges into the phone. I'll try some of these solutions, but if nothing helps it will be cheaper to replace the couch and chair than to continually replace the electronics in our home. Post By Sas (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI have used Static Guard on my couch and WAHLA the static is gone! You can get it at places like Target or Walmart in the laundry area. I used to use it on my clothes all the time so I thought I would see if you could use it on upholstery too - well you can :) There are directions right on the can on how to use it. Post By Sarah (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI have 2 playstation 2 controllers now ruined due to static electricity. Twice when I stood up with the controller in my hand after sitting on a microfiber couch, I heard a loud static elec. snap that zapped me and after that the controllers are useless. Post By John K (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureOh My Gosh! I am so glad to see people with the same problem! We bought our microfiber sectional three weeks ago, and the static is CRAZY! Every dog hair and crumb in the house is sucked to that couch, and the kids' hair is constantly standing on end. I am going to try the dryer sheets with the humidifier and see if that works. Thanks! Post By Sarah (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureWow. I had no idea this problem was so widespread. I just boiught my new microfiber office chair from Staples, and I loved it at first, but now I am getting BLASTED with static electricity whenever I get up from it and touch something. I thought it was just the dry winter air here but now I know better! I have a lot of electronic equipment in my office and I cannot afford to damage something with a discharge. So I will be taking the chair back as soon as possible. Very grateful I found this page! Post By Theo (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI need to know what I can do to control the static on my micro fiber sofa too. Do the spray bottle with water really work? Please give me some advice. Post By Myron (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureOMG! I cannot believe how many people are having the same problem my family and I are encountering. Everyday we get shocked either by each other or our electronics. I touched our ceiling fan to turn it off and I had a really bad shocking in my hand. I almost cried! We have tried static guard, humidifier(which worked for a couple of hours), and now I am down to only the fabric softener and water solution..i hope that works. I have a newborn and I hate that every time I touch her I shock her so bad she cries. I have noticed that if it rains outside we barely get shocked. Interesting... Post By Schwartz032008 (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI can't believe how many other people have this same problem, and how the furniture stores say they have never heard of such thing. We have a Panasonic dvd home theater system that cost almost 400.00 and my husband recently turned it off with his finger and shocked it. Now the LCD screen doesn't work so we can't see what radio station we are listening to or anything, it's awful. So make sure you use your remotes to turn everything on and off. I loved the couches when I saw them at the store and now I hate them! Post By Evelyn (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureOh man. We just moved into our new townhouse. We have new carpet and new microfiber sofas. The static is unbearable. I pray that these ideas work. Post By Jason D. (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI mixed together a spray bottle of water with some fabric softener (I'd say 10 parts water to 1 part f.s.) Sprayed it on the furniture and once it dried, we were static free. It has to be reapplyed every so often (and I spray it at night so it drys before morning) but this does seem to be keeping us static free. Post By Sandy (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI was trying to find info on the microsuede/fiber sofas. The static is out of control! We purchased one at Costco, the camel 2pc sectional. Loved it at the store but, at home it is very annoying to be shocked by my kids constantly. It was a great deal but I'm not so sure now. I will try all of the ideas posted here. If nothing helps I suppose I should be happy I bought it from Costco, they're pretty good with returning things. Wish me luck, I'd hate to have to return it. :) Post By Michelle88 (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI am so disappointed that I didn't know about this problem. We are constantly getting zapped after sitting on our new furniture. I just sprayed it with watered down fabric softener. Sure hope my Christmas party isn't shocking. We'll see how well it works. Though, the manufacturers who say they are unaware of the problem obviously aren't being truthful. I'd think twice before I do business with them again...the furniture company as well. Post By Sandy (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureOMG! The static is so bad I could power my house with my friends sitting on my sectional. This should have come with headlights and a auxiliary plug it's so bad. Thanks for all the suggestions and I'm trying everything. I have nothing to loose, I can't return the sectional. SUX! Post By Jared C (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI just had my sectional delivered and it is awful. I had no idea this was a problem. Did anyone try the manufacture of their furniture? Post By Marcia (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniturefound this site searching for a fix to our ensuing static problem. M y daughter's hair is standing on end as I speak. i can't take it anymore!! I thought it was just us. Now I realize I made a bad purchase. Well I guess I will check into the static guard stuff. Have already tried the dryer sheets and it did not work for me. Post By Enter your name. (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI live in Michigan and just got a section microfiber sectional and the static is pretty bad. I don't want to put static guard or fabric softener on since it will cause dirt to stick to the furniture. I will move the humidifier closer to the sectional to see if that helps. Post By james (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI've been looking for a new sofa and have gotten shocked repeated in the Lazy Boy store while trying out microfiber sofas. The sales people say that you have to wipe down your sofa with dryer sheets. I'm going with leather. Post By Peggy (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
Like many of the other readers here, the manufacturer of our sectional told us we were unique in the static electricity problem three years ago when we bought it. When we had it professionally cleaned a few weeks ago the static dramatically dropped off after the tech included a special softening agent in the rinse to make sure the fabric didn't dry stiff. Post By Enter your name. (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI used to have a microsuede couch/chairs and I never sat in them because of the static. We are buying a new couch soon, and the only fabric we can get in the color we want is microsuede. I was willing to deal until I read this page. I'm really going to have to do something else. Post By Brooke (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureDoes the same thing happen with microsuede? Post By Enter your name. (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI also have a microfiber sectional and it has a major static problem. I use either the Bounce laundry sheets and rub down the couch, a little bit of Downey and water and lightly mist the couch, or static guard and all three work amazingly. Post By Ashley Bader (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureWe just bought a microfiber couch set about a week ago, and there is nothing but static!! We can't even get comfortable without our hair getting all crazy or getting shocked! I see that a lot of people are having this same problem, but what I don't get is why do you want to worry about having to spray it or wipe it down all the time? Wouldn't you just rather get new couches and be able to relax on your new furniture? I am returning mine, microfiber, never again!!! Post By LaNee (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI have a microfiber sectional and the static is continuous. I've wiping the entire sectional down with a water-soaked cloth, reluctantly sprayed static guard, cranked up my humidifier - nothing works! I have hardwood floors, no carpet at all. I hesitate to put liquid fabric softener So disappointing! Does anything actually fix this? Post By ShockedinMpls (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureRecently purchased a sectional from Palliser, are getting static to the point that we do not want to sit on this furniture. Are getting no where with the manufacturer, said ours must be a unique problem, moisture in the air is not an issue. Other cloth furniture in house if fine. Recommend buyer beware if purchasing furniture with this fabric. Also could be a problem for people with heart problems, ie pacemakers, defibs.etc. Post By Dave Briggs, Canada (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI just purchase a microfiber couch and chair my husband and I get zapped every time we get up and touch something. I read some of these ideas and I am going to try the fabric sheet. I will write you with results. Post By Toni Rush (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureWe spent a lot of money on our new sectional. Now we have this horrible problem with static. The poor cat will lay on the sofa and walk around shocking everything. I have tried dryer sheets in the past. I am thinking of trying the fabric softener mix. I didn't know of any one with this problem before. Post By Danielle (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI recently purchased a microfiber sectional and we are experiencing the same problem with static. I have used static guard and it helps for a few days. I thought I was the only one experiencing the out of control static! I have never experienced static like this! Post By Debra (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureAbout four months ago, we bought a cuddler microfiber recliner from Art Van and the static started slowly, but since we've moved into another place it has been horrible. We can't touch anyone else in the household without shocking them, after sitting in the chair. I've experienced static before but NOTHING like this. I've used the Static guard, but only once. I think I am going to soak it tonight. If that doesn't work, I will try the fabric sheets. Thanks for all the feedback. It is amazing to me how many people are suffering from the same problem. Post By Michelle (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureIt's very unbelievable just how much static can come from micro fiber furniture. I followed the directions above with the liquid fabric softener. It worked like a charm I can now turn on and off the gas fireplace with out feeling like I may cause an explosion from the shock. Thanks for saving me with the great advice! Post By Enter your name. (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
I just bought a microfiber couch about 3 months ago and the static is really bad.The shock has ruined 2 of my guitars for guitar hero. I would really like to know if it is safe to put static guard on it. Post By Dustin (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI have the same static problem that has costs me a little cash. My kids have rendered three guitar hero and one driving wheel for our playstation 2 game console useless. We have found that anytime the kids were playing or getting up off off the furniture to grab a controller they would get a good crack of static electricity. I won't replace the controllers until I find a solution. Post By keith (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI live in upstate NY, and am having the same problem. I called the furniture store and was told to put bedsheets on the furniture, and remove them when I have company coming. I am going to try some of your ideas too. Post By amy (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
Oh boy! I just bought a sofa and double-wide recliner, like a love-seat, and just experienced the STATIC! I have 3 days in which to change my mind and am wondering if I should! I love this set though and the feel of it. I will try the suggestions, but I'm wonder if I'd be better off returning them. Also, will the nice fluffy cushions collapse eventually? Post By Suzie (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI am having the same problem. I spent over 1500 on furniture that is almost un-sittable. The static electricity is unbearable. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Post By ramona price (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureWe have a new micro fiber sofa and love seat and we have a huge amount of static electricity. At times my kids hair will stand strait on end it's so bad. So Iam going to try the dryer sheets and will look into the static guard. Thanks Post By chrissie (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI just bought two microfiber recliners. I'm always getting shocked, the static electricity builds up so bad on the chairs that it makes my arm hairs rise. The best thing I found was Static Guard. I spray some of that on whenever the chair builds a charge and it takes care of it everytime. Post By Jeff (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI used no name brand dryer sheets and it worked perfectly. The sheets even removed cat hairs while i was at it! Post By Michael (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI posted the original concern with our furniture. Thanks for all the help. We are in a really dry area, so I got our humidifier going, and I also took a dryer sheet and rubbed it all over the couch and loveseat. When I feel the static coming back, I usually turn the humidifier back on and if it's really staticy I rub it again with a dryer sheet - which I've only had to do a couple of times over the last few months. It usually really helps the problem. Post By BJR from Southern Colorado (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureAbout four years ago we bought a new micro fiber sofa. It was delivered to the house wrapped in 'plastic wrap'. That was great to keep the sofa clean during shipping. But, when I peeled it off, a HUGE amount of static was created. Without thinking, I bought a can of Static Guard and applied it according to the instructions. Worked perfectly! In the ensuing four years, I have never felt the need to reapply. (BTW: found the post while searching on cleaning micro fiber. I'm washing my covers in the machine now). Post By Greg in Vermont (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureWe just moved to Colorado Springs from San Antonio, and just bought a microfiber couch. YIKES! I never knew furniture could hold so much static! In doing a bit of research the best idea I've found is to mix 1 tablespoon liquid fabric softener to 1 spray bottle of water and mist your carpet and furniture. I'm going out to get some now! Post By Kim (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
I live near Denver and I have a microfiber couch with the same problem. We tried vacuuming it and it seems to work a little bit but only for a while. Havn't tried the static guard yet. The static from this couch is rediculous. I feel your pain. Post By Dan (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI haven't had any problems with static from my microfiber chair, but I am constantly getting zapped at other places like the grocery store!! I guess I shuffle my feet alot. Anyway, I would try spraying some Static Guard occasionally on your sofa and chair and see if that helps. Post by mef1957 RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber Furniture
I suggest you try running a humidifier during the winter months if you live in a cold climate. If you live in a warm climate and have central air, I think you'd run it during the warm weather months. Post By Carol in PA (Guest Post) RE: Static Electricity From Microfiber FurnitureI'm wondering if your house is very dry or if you live in a dry area. Sometimes this can cause a lot of static electricity. You could try a humidifer that room. I'm thinking about panty hose, and how you can use hair spray or fabric softener sheets to get rid of static cling, but I don't know if you want to try that on your new furniture!
