A VERY GOOD Remedy for itching!!
I must take hydrocodone for chronic health problems. The best remedy I have found in years is taking 2 to 4 tablets of "1000 Milligram" Vitamin C everyday. MUST be "time-released". I usually take 1000 MG three times a day, and sometimes 4 times a day. It just really gets rid of the itch for me! Sometimes I'll still get a little itch in the morning when I get up down the middle of my back, but that's about it. Works like a charm for me and vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant vitamin for the body. Helps build your immunity!

My remedy for itching is to scratch the itch. Unlike the itch from a bug bite, which gets worse when you scratch it, the itch I have while taking pain pills often goes away after a good scratching session. But I don't know if this would work for everybody. I recently had surgery to resolve back pain and sciatica from crushed nerves, and my itch is generally limited to the parts of my body that had the most pain prior to surgery. So I wonder if it's related to the pain pills at all, or if it could be the result of nerves and tissues that are healing and regenerating.

In a different post, I pointed out that the Tylenol (acetaminophen) found in many opioid pain pills can cause liver disease or failure, and liver disease can produce itching. Rather than acetaminophen, some opioid pain pills contain drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen, and these, too, are associated with liver damage. Drugs such as acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, and others can also cause kidney damage. Like liver disease, kidney disease can produce itching. I wonder if any research is being done on these potential causes of itching associated with opioid pain pills. I suspect not, because it's the opioid component of pain pills that always gets the bad rap.

I take Lortab for chronic back and neck pain. To deal with the itch right now, I take 180 mg of Alegra in the morning about 530am. At lunch time I take a Claritin. After I get off work at 2:30pm, up until around 8pm, if I need an antihistamine I take benedryl. I've even tried switching to Darvocet N100/650, but that even makes me itch a little. Pain relief with Darvocet only helps for a day or two. I may try the Zyrtec. I know what you are all going through and my prayers go with you!

Ask your doctor about Doxepin - It has a variety of uses, one of which is dermtological itch. Also, a beta-blocker can help calm your nervous system down when experiencing reactions like allergies and the itching.

You KNOW the best option is NOT to abuse it! But for what ever reason you are, take over the counter Benedril to stop the itching.

I abuse vicodin. I just started taking them yesterday and yesterday within 4 hours I took 7 or 8 500mg Vic's. The itching was insane. Today i only took 4 from about 1pm to 11:00pm. The itching wasn't as bad but what can I do to completely stop it?

I apply household Ammonia to stop any itching - a lot cheaper then most products, and works!

Crestor
I have been on 5 Mg of Crestor for about 2 years or so. The past 6 weeks I have had this terrible itching and burning on my scalp. Two weeks ago my Dr. increased the dosage to 10 Mg of Crestor and now I am burning and itching on my back, neck and arms...almost everywhere. Most doctors won't listen and I know I need a cholesterol medication. I have been on several in the past and they have caused me muscle problems. I don't know what to do? I am about ready to quit the medicine for a week or so to see if that is the problem. I wonder if that would be enough time to tell?

I appreciate everyone's comments. I take oxycodone. Not much about 15-20millig. a day. My itching insane. It is all through my hair line. my neck, my eyes and nose and even in my ears. I am to the point of stopping the medication and just dealing with the pain. I don't know which is worse. The Benedryl definately helps but makes me extremely tired. The is a good cream called Amlactin. I think you have to ask the pharmacist for it but you do not need a prescription. Good luck. Pray, pray pray

hydrocodone
I am taking hydrocodone/ibuprofen for bad tooth pain. I'm assuming this is what is making me itch at night (though I have eczema). But also, does this med. keep you awake or put you to sleep?

I have been on Crestor 5mg for 2 1/2 weeks and started itching/stinging all over after the first week. I also stopped Lyrica 50 mg the day before the itching/stinging began and thought it could be attributed to that. My doctor doesn't think it is either drug. So the other night I omitted the Crestor and the problems were almost gone the next day. I resumed the Crestor after one day of being off, and the symptoms returned. I am ready to stop Crestor! Anyone with a similar experience or any thoughts.

Itching or pruritis is an adverse side effect, NOT an allergy. I thought I might clear this up as I saw this page and am in medical school.

i have neurofibromatosis and severe back pain and I take hydro and oxycodone depending on the severity of my pain and the hydro isn't too bad but the oxy makes me itch and keeps me up at night for hours. I end up staying up until the medication wears off and the itching stops. I really have tried mostly everything i could think of to prevent the itching. I'm with you when I ask if anyone has any remedies? Dionne

Just in regard to itchy skin - Colidial Oatmeal baths are wonderful. Even calms hives. Walmart carries their brand which is 1/2 price of Aveeno. My dad has eczema and I don't even use soap in the bath, just oatmeal. I itch from Percocet, been on hydrocodone for 2 years now and all of the sudden itching like craze? If it's not one thing it's another - right? Good luck, take care.

Does anyone itch from Diltiazem or Crestor, I take both at night. My itching is mostly at night when I try to sleep. Feels like I have bugs biting me. If I take Tylenol PM sometimes it will subside.

I have used Witch Hazel (holistic product) but some drugstores carry it to and also normal underarm deodorant. Both of these worked well on summer
bug bites and itchy skin from too much sun.
Could give them a try.

I hope that it is ok to mention brand names here. My mom gave me some Skin So Soft Moisturing Shower Gel from Avon for Christmas. Oh my stars!!! It doesn't take care of the itching completely, but it does at least relieve it for a few hours after I shower.

I itch on my head and my face, as if I had lice, when ever I take hydrocodone and other like meds.
It is so embarrasisng to me, I am afraid people will think I am infested!
I take a large dose of benedryl, which helps, but I cant do that unless I am home and ready for sleep.
WHY do I itch like that with this medicine?

Ask your Doctor, what he thinks about you taking a medication called hydoroxycine, it is used for nausea, also in some cases may help your pain medication work better.It may cause some sleepiness too, but it is an option to talk to your Doctor about.Better double check my spelling.Hope it helps.Kersti

Thank you for all your posts. It is a side effect, not an allergy. It's listed as a side effect. Now that I have been on it for awhile the itching isn't as bad. Anyone with fibro or cfs that wants to chat, send me an email. Valery

I have fibro and chronic pain and take hydocodone, so I sympathize with you very much. I agree with harperlee that you should mention it to your dr. ....it also struck me that you could be drying your skin out with the allergy meds as well

I'm an RN and we give atarax for itching. If itching is a constant problem everytime you take your med, you need to find a new med.

I do not take any codone type prescriptions but I do understand about the itchiness. I have incredibly dry skin and itch all the time. I went to the doctor last week and it was one of the things on my "list". He suggested a lotion called Eucerin (not sure on spelling). I have tried it before but it bugs me because it just kind of sits on the top of my skin. I feel like a walking oil slick. I have tried Curel and several other lotions to no avail. I even changed my bath soap to a moisturing type soap, Oil of Olay, but still itch. It even goes as far as my scalp and ears itching. I can't tell you how many different shampoos and conditioners I have tried. My doctor did give me some Zyrtek samples to take and they have helped some but I have to tell you they knock me flat on my backside so I make sure I take them at night only. Anyone with any additional suggestions, I'm up for them too. Thanks

If your itching isn't an allergic reaction, Zyrtec is very helpful for dealing with skin allerigies. It has been incredibly helpful for me and I don't itch anymore.

I agree with the guest post. I think your itching is an allergic reaction. There are so many new pain killers out there that there should be something that doesn't make you itch.
Arnica seems to be the most popular homeopathic treatment for fibromyalgia. Ask your pharmacist if there is any drug interactions with this treatment first.
http://www.homeopathiconline.com seems to have the most comprehensive and easy to understand treatments.

I, also get head to toe itching from certain medications. Especially Hydrocodone or anything with a codeine substance in it. My pharmacist said its drom the inactive ingredients used to hold the pill together.

I think you should try taking the benadryl. Usually after a few doses, you don't feel as sleepy. Maybe you could start taking it on a weekend.

Sounds like an allergy, rather than a side effect. Talk to your doctor. I too take Vicodon for fibro , it really helps, no itching.
