Inexpensive Heating for a Cabin

We use our lake cabin all of June, July and Aug, with only day visits to open and close it in May and October. We've had it for 39 years and have NEVER used heat of any kind. However we now can't get NC insurance without a whole house heating system. What is the cheapest arrangement that would "pass muster"? The house is on a fabulous double lot and would be a definite tear-down if we sold it.

not being from NC i'm not sure of this but here in missouri (i am a licensed agent) you can get insurance that is called fire and ec (fire and extended coverage) it doesn't have the coverage a homeowners policy or vacation rental policy has but it covers the essentials. have you checked around for insurance? there are also online insurance companies but i don't recommend them too highly, its too easy to get ripped off.
if you have to install heating to comply with the law, ask your agent what is the least they will accept in order to insure the property. if they are at all concerned with keeping your business they should tell you.

You could purchase a ventless propane heater ( the kind that hangs on the wall)and a propane tank(smaller one 50 to 100 pounds) . check with your insurance first. I live in Tn and a lot of my friends use this as back-up in case the power goes out.
