Keeping Flies Away from Your Horse

We have a few horses on our farm and as it is summer in South Africa, the horses are continually bothered by flies. We are having a particularly hot dry summer. Can anyone give me a recipe that I can make up at home to rub or spray on the horses to keep the flies away. Three of the horses have little foals a few weeks old.

Fill a ziploc bag 1/2 full and putting in 3 shiny pennies seal the bag and turn it until it on its side where is it cone shaped and hang it up that way. The flies must think it is a hive or something. It really works. Tried it after huricane Katrina.

You can put water in a plastic baggie and tie shut and hang down from the top of your door. They say the flies will not come in your house. I know a few people that do this and they say it works. (sandwich baggie 1/2 filled with water). Easy and cheap, hopefully it will work for you too.
Good Luck
