My brother and his family live there - when we visited they took us to the Arabia Steamboat Museum.
It was really interesting to see over 200 tons of recovered artifacts from the sunken 1856 steamboat. You could call (816) 471-4030 for more details

Well... imo I wouldn't call World of Fun inexpensive, but if you are going to go here are some "tips":
You can find discount coupons around Kansas City, I believe Dairy Queen is one such place. Price Chopper is another. (MUCH cheaper than at the gate.)
Call to see if they still honor their $5 off with any Toyota key promotion.
They have .25 cent cotton candy this season (all season long)
Junior and Senior prices are $9.95 I believe, but I think they raised their regular admission to make up for this. 2 and younger are free.

The nice thing about Kansas City (Kansas and Missouri) is that you can get around the Metro Area in roughly 30 mins. or so (pending traffic of course) Here's some stuff you might check out, most are free, all "cheap" to do:

The Kansas City Zoo is cheaper on Tuesdays. It's only $5 pp normally $8.50 adult, $5.50 children 3-11. Go to www.kansascityzoo.org for details and a downloadable map.

We live about 45 minutes from Kansas City and have visited frequently since I was in college. Here are our recommendations:
The Kansas City Zoo is also fun for kids, but not necessarily cheap--it costs $30 for me, my husband and 2 kids (2 & 4) and double stroller. There's also an Imax theater there. If you have membership in another zoo, you may be able to get a discount on admission.
A cheap place for entertainment is Great Mall of the Great Plains, just down I-435 in Olathe. It's an outlet mall in a big oval shape with play areas interspersed throughout. It's free, a great place for the kids to play, it's air-conditioned, and the grown-ups can do some shopping too.
If the kids are older, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a neat place. I think admission is free on Fridays. It's just a few blocks off Country Club Plaza--again lots of shopping and large movie theater. The buildings are inspired by Seville, Spain, so the architecture is really nice.
Like everyone else has suggested, Cabela's is really neat, even if you're not into sporting goods. The display of taxidermy is impressive, and the kids love the aquarium.
Also around Great Wolf Lodge is the brand-new Legends shopping center and the home of the T-Bones Baseball team. If you're a Nascar fan, it's also a stone's throw from Kansas Speedway.

Depending on the ages...Nebraska Furniture Mart is right there by Cabellas too. They have EVERYTHING for a home including electronics, furnishings, decor, kitchen. Hubby and I took 3 hours to walk through...and our kids liked looking at everything and "wish listing" and they were only 3 1/2 and 18 months at the time.

You can take them to the Cabela's store. It is a lot of fun without spending money! They have a large aquarium set up and stuffed big game (the elephants are amazing!) They also have some awesome fudge, so I would set aside some money for that! My DH went there a couple of times with our son who was 3 at the time, when we lived in Wichita. He loved it!

My daughter and her family spent a weekend there early this summer and absolutely LOVED it. Just staying at the lodge was very entertaining. Right next to the lodge is Cabela's, a huge sporting goods store. It is FULL of actual mounted animals and live fish in aquariums. There's a lot to look at in that store for EVERYONE! I also believe there is a children's museum about 5 miles from the Great Wolf Lodge also. We haven't checked that out yet but plan to on our next trip to KC.
