But the point, I'm trying to make is if we were all scared of the dog food China was producing and killing our pets, all the plastics and other products China was producing, making folks sick, shouldn't be be also concerned about the candies, etc., that we're putting in our mouths come holiday time, etc.? Start turning over those cans, boxes, etc. read those labels!

The Jelly Belly, Mickey and Smarties candy canes are produced by Spangler in Ohio, although even Spangler has a Mexican plant as well (employs about 400 in the U.S. and 190 in a co-manufacturing facility in Juarez, Mexico). Production cost is not the issue, but the cost of sugar in the US, artificially inflated to support (some would say line the pockets of) American cane growers.
If you can't find canes in store, most remaining producers will supply by mail, at ridiculously low prices. (e.g. $17.76 for a case of smarties or Dum Dums canes -12 boxes; less for classic canes and boxes of c. 500 mini cans). Shipping can be expensive though as hard candy is relatively heavy for the package size.

I bought some candy canes at the Dollar Store! YUCKY! I don't know what it was, but they smelled weird and everyone commented on them. They didn't taste bad but I'd prefer candy Made in the USA!

Also lend an eye as to where your medications are made, ask your pharmacist! Many medicines are made in foreign countries without our quality control measures. Be an informed consumer.

Bob's Candy Company, one of the more prominent candy cane manufacturers, moved a few years ago from Albany, GA to Mexico because of the price of sugar! No concern whatsoever for the people they left behind without jobs! Needless to say, you couldn't pay me to buy Bob's candies anymore - and I hope nobody else will, either. We all need to make a stand somewhere, don't we? God bless all of you.

I have had 2 B very Vigilant with looking on cans & all Products because of Severe Food Allergies within my many children,my Hubby as well as myself. I live in Australia and this has been a big issue for a whole decade or more now,.A few original Australian-made Australian-food Manufacturer Icons have tried to take this vast problem on,but without the success of many of the Australian Public being in agreement to only purchase Australian-Made Produce, which has a clearly Governmental Marked Label on it that cannot B missed.
This scheme has not done as well as hoped. This is largely I feel due to the cost of the non Australian Owned Produce as they are so much cheaper,one would think that if say the Australian or American Government truly wanted us all to purchase our own Countrie's Products they would make them cheaper than the influx of these other ones from all these other Countries.
I am originally from north America & find this rather a sad thing to learn that this has become such a big problem in America, as it is here in Australia.
We all need 2 take a greater awareness & Care 2 know where the products are actually from.Cheaper is Not always the Best hey :) However, financially cheaper will seemingly always win-out.

I have been saying the same thing for more than a few years now, I think people are starting to finally get it.
I looked all over town and couldn't find USA made Candy canes but at Big Lots found Jelly Belly canes, Smartie canes and at last found Mickey Mouse PEPPERMINT canes. These were $1.80 and $1.90 a box of 12. Many of the brands we are used to know were made in this country are now made in China and Mexico. Where is your can of PINEAPPLE from? Dole, Not Hawaii anymore. Watch the fresh fruit too.
Sometimes those tiny stickers will tell you.
Hershey's moved their Oakland ,Ca. plant to Mexico.I believe that the only place in the USA that still has a Hershey Plant is the original in Hershey,PA. Look on the backs of all candy wrappers to see where they are made. Then make it a habit to check all food. You can still get some canned veggies and fruit made here at the Dollar stores,2-$1.00) but you have to READ LABELS!
Some of us can't afford to buy name brand and have found out many products are made by those same companies and sold to stores for their " store brand". Be good to yourself and family.cTake the time to look at what you are eating and what the kids are eating. Good health to all.

Anyone using this site has made the effort to live thrifty. We need to encourage others that recycling, homecooking and driving your car for years is the way to financial success. Raising children to believe that "stuff" makes the person has to be overturned by the person makes the person. Take to your streets, know your neighbors, speak to the children on your block, you may be the best chance they have to learn by example.

Every voice counts. I applaud you for trying to buy American and I try to do the same. I have NEVER given WalMart my business as the majority of their products are made in China. Every time you turn around someone is recalling something else that was made in China (mostly children's items) because of excessive lead!

For American Made Candy Canes, etc., try Hammond Candies in Denver. We took a tour and watched them make candy canes. You can order from their web site

We took our grandchildren and they were thrilled. The tour is free with samples.
By the way, the candy canes are handmade and are not the thin canes found in Wal Mart or Walgreens. Plus, they are American made.

I'm afraid that 'candy canes' are the least of our economic problems; the majority of all store items are produced outside of the US... Those that aren't, have foreign parts..Our Congress wants Free International Trade (NAFTA); therefore jobs and manufacturers are exiting the US... Congress is bewildered as to why unemployment is the highest in 30 years; what benefit is it if Mortgage rates are at 4% or lower, if we're without a job....and Detroit has known (at least) from the mid-70's that oil was at a premium, yet they still manufactured those 8-10mpg autos...
Surprise, Surprise... Ford once quoted "We'll NEVER manufacture a Hybrid car".... Toyota and Honda said "O.K., we'll take that market."... Feel sorry for Detroit??? Not me!!!
