Flower/Snowflake Motif Bed Cover

By Connie Decker Brown

I used this motif because it can be used year-round. In the spring, summer and fall I call them flowers and in the winter I call them snowflakes! The instructions are the same for any size bed. The only difference is - the bigger the bed, the more pieces you need. This is not a project you'll finish overnight, but it's well worth it.

Flower/Snowflake Motif Bed Cover

Level: Intermediate

Supplies:

  • 4 - 1 lb spools of 4 ply worsted weight cotton yarn for a king-sized bed (I used Sugar 'n Cream in White)
  • Size H crochet hook - I suggest that you play around with several sizes until you get the look you want. Larger for a lighter, airier look and smaller for a more dense look.

Motif Instructions: See illustration for all nine rounds

Base Ring: ch 4, join with sl st.

Round 1: ch 4 (count as 1 dc and 1 ch), [1 dc into ring, 1 ch] 7 times, sl st to 3rd of 4 ch. (8 spaces)

Round 2: 1 ch, 1 sc into same place as 1 ch, [3 ch, skip 1 ch, 1 sc into next dc] 8 times, omitting sc at end of last rep, sl st to first sc

Round 3: Sl st into each of next 2 ch, 1 ch, 1 sc into same place as 1 ch, [6 ch, 1 sc into next 3 ch arch] 8 times, omitting sc at end of last rep, sl st to first sc

Round 4: Sl st into each of next 3 ch, 1 ch, 1 sc into same place as 1 ch, [6 ch, 1 sc into next arch] 8 times, omitting sc at end of last rep, sl st to first sc

Round 5: 1 ch, 1 sc into same place as 1 ch, *work [2 dc, 4ch, 2dc] into next arch, 1 sc into next sc; rep from * 7 more times, omitting sc at end of last rep, sl st to first sc

Round 6: Sl st into each of next 2 dc and next 2 ch, 1 ch, 1 sc into same place as 1 ch, [8 ch, 1 sc into next 8] 8 times, omitting sc at end of last rep, sl st to first sc

Round 7: 1 ch, *work a Wave of [1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 trc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc] into next arch; rep from * 7 more times, sl st to first sc

Round 8: Sl st into each of next 4 sts to trc, 1 ch, 1 sc into same place as 1 ch, [11 ch, 1 sc into trc at center of next Wave] 8 times, omitting sc at end of last rep, sl st to first sc

Round 9: 1 ch, work [2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 4 trc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc] into next 11 ch arch 8 times, sl st to first sc

Fasten off.

Number of motifs to make: The number of pieces that you will need will vary by the size crochet hook you chose, the size of your bed, and how you want it to cover your bed. There are 225 in the cover pictured.

Final step: Place several pieces together to see how you want them to fit together. Then sew corners with needle and thread, which holds much better than sewing it with yarn.
