Planting Trees In Clay Soil

We have a cabin in West Virginia and I want to plant some trees but have no clue what type are best. We have clay soil. Hope someone can help.

Some trees that are best suited to clay are:

Norway and Silver Maple
Ohio Buckeye and Horsechestnut
River Birch
Hawthorn
White, Black and Green Ash
Common Honeylocust
Kentucky Coffeetree
European Larch and Tamarack
Apples and Crabapples
Aspen and Cottonwood
Bur Oak and Eastern Pin Oak
Swamp White Oak
Willow
Lindens
Elms

You did not mention the tree(s) location, sun, shade, etc, so here are a few ideas based on your Zone 6, and clay soil...near a street or heavily traveled zone with cars: Trident Maple, Dawn Redwood, Nootka Cypress; in the shade: White Oak, Red Oak, Sargent Cherry; Evergreens: Spruce, Sweet Bay Magnolia, White Pine; Flowering Tres: Bradford Pear, Flowering Cherry. For the clay soil, make sure you are raising the bed on which the tree lies for good drainage.
