Making a Fabric Wastebasket Cover

I am looking to make a wastebasket cover for a cylinder shaped container and keep getting the dimensions wrong. Easy, I know, but I am dyslexic and having problems cutting the fabric to size. The base is 22cm, height 27cms and top diameter 27cms approximately. Any tips appreciated.

RE: Making a Fabric Wastebasket Cover

Margaret, if you want to use fabric that is gathered, you could make a large tube with casings at the ends (for top and bottom) and just slip it on the basket. if you want it to fit snugly, then why don't you trace it out as you would for a lampshade. Mark a beginning point at the top and bottom edges of the basket. Then lay it on its side on large newspaper or tissue and trace the edges as you roll the basket starting and ending on the marks you had made. Connect the top and bottom lines vertically for side seams. You can then lay this down on contact paper is that is what you're using. But if you're using fabric don't forget to make seam allowances to turn under and then stitch or glue in place. I hope this helped!

RE: Making a Fabric Wastebasket Cover

Do you mean a fabric cover that has elastic top and bottom?

If so you need the circumference, you said the diameter is 27 so
Pi x &frac; diameter = 42.5

Then decide how full you want the gathering for the length of your fabric. Double or triple this measurement.

The width of the fabric is the height of the bin (27 cm) plus 4 cm each end (8cm), top and bottom and enough for the casing for the elastic, say 2cm both ends (4cm) and a 1cm seam allowance both ends (2 cm) =27+8+4+2 = 41 cm

So
Double gathering: 85 cm x 41cm

Triple gathering: 127.5 x 41cm

Remember elastic casing allowed is 2cm and seam allowances 1cm

Remember to leave an opening for the elastic to be threaded through. Don't cut the elastic until you get the right tension/gathering , then tie off and cut.
