At WalMart, I always print out a sticker for each item and paste it on the item, and I check when I get home. Never had a problem bringing the item back with price tag attached and having incorrect price credited and correct price charged! Also, if you leave something in the cart only to get home and find it missing, many times the people at customer service DO NOT check the bags that were turned in to see if it is there! I finally asked the supervisor to please check the bags and there was the item I'd forgotten!

In Michigan we have what is called a 'bounty law' for being over-charged for items. There are rules:
1) The item must be scanned, not manually entered into a cash register
2) Your transaction must be completed and you have the register receipt in your hand.
3) Go to customer service and show them the incorrectly charged item.
4) The law states you are allowed ten times the amount of the over charge UP TO $5.
5) In Target stores here in Michigan they use to just give you the $5 -- I don't know if that is still their policy.

It's really hard to watch your purchases being rung up if the cashier starts before you finish unloading the cart. So what do is find a register that has a person in front of me that has a lot of items, then I can make sure that I have everything on the belt before the cashier starts ringing up.

I agree 100 percent. If I dont get to catch it as it is rung up, then I always check my receipt before I go out the door. Even items that have not been on sale, were rung up a higher price. You offered a great tip. It does happen, it has happened to me.

I have a system whenever I go shopping. If I don't do it anywhere else I do it at Wal Mart because many many times items have rung up more than they were posted for. I once had a 4 pound bag of dog food ring up for $37.89!
Anyway, I keep a calculator and a notebook in my purse. As I'm shopping I write down each item that goes into my cart and its price. When I'm done shopping I go sit down somewhere and total up my list, adding tax when I get done. This way I know ahead of getting to the register if I've over-spent and can put things away if I need to.
This also helps me to make sure things are ringing up at the right price. I also go to the to the self-checkout if there is one. If not tho, when I get to the register I turn the screen around to me myself. And I refuse to let the cashier or the customers behind me (they are worse than the cashiers) try to make me hurry. I try not to be extra slow, but I will not be hurried either. People get angry, but I don't care. Too many times I have had items ring up too much.

This is also important if something you picked up without knowing the price of turns out to be very expensive, or the wrong thing, now that you see it again. I was trying to buy flax seed, my son put wheat germ in the basket without noticing the difference. I saw it at check out and the cashier graciously let me slip out of line to get the flax seed. I would have gone home with a nine dollar package of something I did not want or need had I not been watching the screen.
Some cashiers will turn the screen toward you if you ask. If the cashier can see that you are not nitpicking her/him but just trying to watch your dollars, they are sympathetic. I once told a cashier to tell me when the total approached a certain dollar amount, luckily my total was well beneath it, but (yes I do know her, and am a frequent shopper) I literally did not have a penny over that amount to spend, and had a pile of coupons to redeem to ensure I didn't go over. She nodded discreetly, smiled, turned the screen to face me, and I could see that with my coupons I would be fine.
If possible, where available, I also use the self check out. This is easier since I use my own bags, use lots of coupons and sometimes change, and I often shop for just a few things to round out that evening's dinner on my way home from work. It also impresses on me the cost of each individual item.

Especially important to watch when shopping at thrift stores or discount stores where the name of the item is not printed on the receipt.

Have a small calculator the checker can see with you and they will be much more careful-every time.

Speaking as someone in customer service, if you notice the mistake after it has been rang up, go directly to the customer service desk. But, don't just take your receipt, because all the receipt will usually get is the same price that you were already charged. If you have the item, we can verify exactly what it is and find the correct price. It could be that there was an old sign, it could be that the sale was on the 48 oz and you picked up the 32 oz by mistake, or it could be a lot of different things. If you have the item, it's easier to verify. The customer service should be happy to do this, as long as you politely point it out to them and request them to check it out.
Some customers come up and begin out in an accusatory tone from the begining. Remember, the problem is usually a mistake that has already been made, and you have a common goal -- to resolve that problem!
If you are polite and treat the customer service person with respect, they are much more likely to go out of their way to help you.

I also watch when the cashier rings up items but I prefer to use the self checkout lanes if they are available, that way I can take my time and watch as I ring them up. If it rings up wrong you call someone to fix it .

And at ShopRite grocery stores (and probably others), if the wrong price rings up on the register, you get that item for FREE! I once received a $17 package of diapers for free because the price rang up incorrectly!

I have noticed the cashiers will talk to me while they're ringing my items up, meaning that (normally), I'd have to look at them and not the screen. I'm certain I annoy them when I talk and still watch the screen and yes...I've often noticed different prices than marked. This is a small town, two stores - the cashiers/managers know me well enough that they don't even question it anymore, just give me the credit, LOL. Gotta watch for even the littlest things to save money!

I check what is rung up, but sometimes I get distracted so I check each item on the sales slip. Be amazed at how many times there is an error. Yesterday the clerk rang up the most expensive item twice and omitted the least expensive. The total was in there favor. I always catch my supermarket making errors. When they do, I get the item at no charge plus my money back for that item plus a dollar.
