You can preventatively treat puppies exposed to parvo with Parvaid - http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/parvaid.html or http://www.parvopuppy.com It is known to prevent 90% of exposed dogs from coming down with parvo.

If your dog is over the age of 18 months, it will not get parvo, as parvo is a disease of puppies 18 months of age and younger.

Petstore Pup & My Other Dogs?

We just got a new puppy a little over a week ago- he was supposed to have been dewormed and had his first shots. Well the next day we found out he had a pretty bad case of worms so we decided to get his first round of shots just in case, but we couldn't get into the vet for another week, (today.)
Well this morning he had diarrhea and threw up a few hours later. So when we were at the vet for his vaccinations I told my vet & he said he might be parvo. He gave Trey (the new pup) a vaccine for parvo only.
But I am worried that my other dogs might get it, I have 3 more dogs, a chihuahua mix who is 6 months, & 2 basset hounds who are 7 yrs & 10 yrs.
The oldest is the only one who was not up to date on his DHPP vaccine.
Do you think any of my other dogs will get it?
We have bred bassets & have never had a parvo case until now with the puppy we got from the pet store.

The vet i took my puppy to today said pedia light should hep. ask the vet about that.

We only had our sweet little Caprice for a few weeks she had only been for a couple of walks we had been told she had her injections but turns out she hadn't! As my husband had been of work for 2 months after broken hand we had eaten away all our savings our only choice was to have our beloved caprice put down! PLEASE take care get your dogs injections that 2 seconds worth of pain is better then what it may have if it gets parvo and even if you feel bad about pain from injections Believe me, it's nothing compared to that of the parvo virus! RIP my little sweetie all of us will miss you the 5 kids are very sad you are gone.

I have three dogs I love dearly. My sister breed her two German Shepards and had two puppies left. they were the picture of perfect health and the vet was amazed how healthy they were. The vet insisted the puppies come back for there third vaccination for parvo if my sister had not sold them yet. she took the puppies in and they were put in a room right away. the vet tec came in and said "oh, i haven't cleaned this room yet. We have a puppy in the back with Parvo that was in this room" NICE!

7 days later the female puppy started throwing up and having diarrhea. My sister called me panicking because I had worked at a vet office before. I told her to take her in right away. The day before she had sold the male puppy, but while she was at the vets getting the female tested, the lady who bought the male puppy called and he had started throwing up. so my sister ran and got him and took him to the vets. he showed up negative and the female showed up positive. I'm sure though after a few more days he might turn up negative, so the new owners don't want him now. It is obvious the puppies picked this virus up from the vet office.

My sister is in a battle now with the vets because they say the dogs could have picked it up from anywhere, not their office. They don't understand how my sister was with these dogs, there was absolutely no way they got it anyplace else. The only socialize with each other, not even with mom or dad. The puppies caught this horrible virus because of their negligence. Now they are denying they ever had a puppy with Parvo in the vet office the day my sister went in, trying to cover their tracks.

So even if the dogs have had all their shots, they can still catch Parvo. Like human vaccines, there might be one in a thousand or Million that does not work. As well, sometimes the mothers antibodies the puppies pick up from the milk might actually hinder the vaccination. Always use precaution with puppies. I've seen many cases come in to the vet office when i worked there and it's a horrible thing to watch a helpless puppy have to go through.

Parvo is a deadly awful virus that is highly contagious especially among puppies under one year old or dogs with not so up to par immune systems. Parvo is transferred through urine, feces and saliva of an infected dog. Some one on this list said that it comes form puppy mills and dogs coming in from Mexico, although it is more likely to see the disease in these conditions this is a very misleading statement you can get parvo ANYWHERE!

I recently purchased a beautiful well bred puppy from a very reputable breeder and he came down with parvo unbeknownst to her. He had picked it up at the vet when receiving his health certificate to fly. The vet used and unsleeved thermometer that we are almost sure had just been in and infected dog. Not bashing vets as I adore my vet, but if you think about it, a vets office is almost a sure place to pick up parvo as you can be sure that sick dogs have been there for treatment meaning the virus is there somewhere!

Now don't panic and DO TAKE YOUR DOGS TO GET VACCINATED or if you vaccinate yourself DO IT DO NOT PUT IT OFF FOR ANY REASON! Use caution, keep your pet in a carrier even if it is inconvenient for you, it is a barrier of protection for your dog. Don't let people touch your dog while at the vet, kids especially are not thinking about transferring diseases and innocently always want to pet other animals.

I don't care of people think I am a snob, it's my dog and I have the right to say kindly "Please do not touch my dog, thank you!" Vets that use proper sanitation and cleanliness practices are the safest but IT'S STILL PRESENT! When you take your puppy in to be vaccinated be sure to ask them to clean the table in front of you so you know it has been cleaned. Be sure they use a CLEAN SLEEVED THERMOMETER!

Have them clean any surface including scales and or any kennels they may place your dog in in front of you. If they get offended, find another vet! They should be as concerned about your pets health as you are!

Do not take your dog to places like parks, pet stores or beaches until you know that your puppy is FULLY vaccinated! This will help to lessen the chance that you dog will get ill. Vaccinations do help I have 2 dogs that were fully vaccinated that came down with parvo after being infected by the one who came. They made a very speedy and remarkable recovery, but we also lost 3 one who was not fully vaccinated due to another health issue and one who was only 11 weeks old and was not old enough to have all her vaccinations as well as a 5 1/2 week old who just ever had a chance vaccination wise. If your puppy gets sick take it to a good vet! This will insure their best chance of survival. They are trained and have staff round the clock and know what they are doing and you would can exhausted because they need 24 care.

MY vet was been awesome through all my trials and tribulations through this nightmare. My vet and their staff have also been a great source of encouragement and comfort. Be sure to check out all the vets in your area BEFORE you get a dog to see how they do things in their office and what their average prices are for routine treatments. Some vets are more reasonable than others but you know what they say about getting what you pay for. Money should be the deciding factor in choosing a good vet.

Talk to clients and find out how they like this vet and why.
Remember dogs are like kids, they deserve the very best! If you love your dogs vaccinate them and keep them home until they are fully vaccinated to protect them! Quarantine new dogs (especially young dogs) so that your other dogs are not at risk! Good luck out there!

I have a 6 month old dog at home that has all his vaccinations i was wondering if anyone knows if he is safe I love my dog and don't want anything to happen to him. I have no children. Dear Kathy,

I was so happy to read that your dog was vaccinated. It is so much cheaper to vaccinate than treat parvo. Treatment runs into the thousands... with only a small chance of survival.

Your boxer should be fine as long as his inital vaccination was boosted a month later, and he was healthy at the time of both shots. Some people like to have a third booster, just to ensure immunity, particularly in high parvo-incidence areas.

You need to scour your yard for poo. If sick puppy pooped in your yard, the virus will be in your soil (for up to a year). While this should not affect your boxer who has immunity, any other dog coming into your yard will be at risk. You and your dog can also track it out of the yard and infect the neighbourhood.

Spray pure bleach on visible poo. Carefully triple bag it. Then put it in another bag for good measure. Bleach your shovel. Dig out about a foot of soil that was around and under any poo, triple bag it, and send it to the dump. (Even better, your veterinarian may have access to an incinerator to dispose of it.) Spray the rest of the yard with 1:20 bleach solution. (Easier if you have a weed sprayer.)

I foster for a rescue, and our vet tells us nothing kills parvo virus like cheap old bleach. If puppy went into the house, spray a 1:20 bleach solution on everything. (One part bleach to 20 parts water... on your couch, your carpets, your lino, any toys, clothing... anything puppy could have touched.)

I think you will be one of the fortunate ones... and you made your own luck by vaccinating your pet.

I have a 3 month old chihuahua and he played with a puppy that was sick and had just died from parvo. I was really scared that my puppy would have it too. So he got sick 3 days later and didn't want to eat or drink so i took him in the vet and the test was negetive but they told me he was okay. that night he got up playing and eating,drinking water so i thought he didn't have parvo. He got sick again and started vommiting foam the next day. I called a vet doctora nd he told me to go back to the place i took him in for the test and tell them he's not feeling well. Cause he said that it has to be parvo. I was really sad and upset. So I gave them a call and told them what was going on. they didn't know what it was and told me to go in the next morning to retest him. But they told me to give him pedialite so he won't be so dehydrated. i took him in the next morning and he was positive for parvo this time. They said it probably just didn't show up yet...it takes at least a week 1/2 to show. I was so sad. But right now he's fighting parvo and he's doing better. I took home some IV and antibiotics for him and took really good care of him and he'll be done with his medication on thursday. I'm so thankful. so get your puppy checked up a week later. there is a chance your puppy might have parvo. it depends if they have their shots yet. but for puppies they need it every two weeks until they're 16 weeks old. I hope your puppy is doing okay. and hopefully he's negetive for parvo.

Parvo is a horrible disease.The lining of the intestine sloughs off,causing bloody diarhea,mucous,any food gives the virus something to feed on thereby prolonging the process.water cannot be absorbed by this infected intestine so dehydration is part of the side effects.Some breeds are more prone to Parvo.Your pup vaccinations will help,although no vac's are 100% effective.I think it woud lessen the severity if it is contacted so that's a plus.over time older pets build up an immunity.That's why any pup should be sure to follow the series of vacs.The incubation is 10 days. The other respondent was correct in the fact no puppies should be brought into an infected yard @least 6 months(and I'm in Mi.where it freezes!) Best of luck.Hang in there.

Don't let current vaccinations lure you into a false sense of security. When my dog was young, he was current with all his shots and still got parvo. We noticed very quickly that he was sick and took him to the vet's (it was early during a holiday weekend). The vet wanted us to wait until Tuesday morning, but we chose not to and that decision probably saved our pet's life. To make matters worse, we had another dog that we kept in the yard with him and the two were together constantly. Our dog lived, and we had to bring him home to the same yard (I'd always heard that you shouldn't have a dog there for some time because the virus is still alive.) The other dog never got sick. Both ended up living long lives.

Talk to your vet! Parvo can be deadly. If your dog has been vaccinated, it should be ok, but it seldom pays to take a chance, especially with our pets!

If your dog had all his vaccinations up to date, there is no reason why he should get sick at all. If you are still unsettled, phone your vet and ask them this question. They should be able to put your mind at ease.

If your dog as been properly vaccinated he should be OK. Call your vet to find out if there is anything else to do. BTW, parvo is deadly often, and often comes with puppy mill dogs or those bred in Mexico and smuggled in. Word of caution-only buy puppies from sources where you can actually see the premises where they were born and raised. Do not purchase from pet stores, street corner salesmen, etc.

The Parvo vaccine should have been in the cluster of shots. They are routine. I would keep a close eye on your pup. Go to work, and have a neighbor check in on him once or twice.
