Organizing My Craft Room

I have a craft room. It sounds good, but it is also used as a book room, DVD, VHs storage. My problem is I am a quilter. I have organized the closet, but not the room. My handy husband made shelves 6 feet high and 6 feet wide. on two sides of the room. I have a double closet on the the other. The last wall is used up with a 16 drawer chest that I use to the max. In the middle of the room my husband made a table high enough and long enough for cutting quilt pieces and it also slants. But the problem is there is too much stuff in that room. I collect porcelain dolls and thimbles too. They are all in the craft room. It is third bedroom in the house. There is no other place to move any of the stuff and I really don't want to throw any of it away. Rummages are out. HELP!

I have added a LONG single shelf in my quilting room that is approximately 12 inches down from the ceiling for storage of items that I do not use all the time. The shelf bottom rests on the door and window trim; that's my measuring tool for where to place the shelf.

When entering the room, there is no visible clutter since the shelf is above the door. Shelf items are only visible once you are inside the room and turn back toward the door.

In the photo, we are just finishing a remodel, and have not yet painted the door and trim. I'm already thinking of adding more ceiling shelves in my quilting room. They are SO practical!

I think of easy-to-reach, easily accessible storage areas as Prime Real-Estate. These areas should be used to store things that are used often; every day.

Sub-Prime Real Estate is anything that I would need to bend down to get at... knee to floor level, and anything that I would need a step-stool to reach.

Sub-Sub-Prime Real Estate is an area in which I would need to "travel" to access those items; attic or basement. (That's where I keep my EXTRA quilt batting.)

Perhaps your collections could be placed on "ceiling shelves", out of your Prime Real Estate, which is your WORK space.

My parents have a short hallway in their home, and have put "ceiling shelves" here to house their small DVD/VHS collection. The shelves are only 5 inches deep. They have kept a folding step-stool behind the hallway door for the last 57 years, so it's easy to access their movies.

Maybe there are other rooms in your home that could use ceiling shelves, and unburden your craft room.

I know how you feel, but my crafting has taken over every room of the house! My sister buys cat litter in big jugs, which I get when empted. I cut the top off, whicj leaves a large container to store patterns, yarns, etc, I take a Sharpie and write on all 4 sides what is in it, and place them on shelves, I had ti buy the shelves (WalMarts), but the containers are all free!

Two of the things I have used before are: 1) Hanging clear, shoe organizers on the doors of my closets (or even on walls) The clear pockets that shoes would ordinarily go in, allow me to easily see the contents of the craft item I keep there.

The second method I use is to hang peg board (again, inside, or even outside of closet door) I hang spools of ribbon, tape, etc. whatever you want. I also put different types of items in clear zip-top food storage bags and hang them from the pegs, There are many different peg board hangers available. Hope this helps.

I don't know how you are currently using your closet but I have two boys sharing one room and we did not have enough drawer or shelf space so I put clothes bars in each side from front to back at two levels, one that they can reach and one high for storage of out of season clothes. You could do that to store fabric pinned to hangers. In the center I shelved the entire wall and used Ikea-ish type plastic cantainers for all the odds and ends, we even have their jeans folded and stacked by size on the shelves. Just an idea!
