I would like to Thank everyone that wrote in about the wedding runner. We used tar paper that covers your roof and it worked great because my runner was white. The heels didn't go through it. The wedding was great and we had a great day. Thanks again everyone. Married 5/9/09 : )

My wedding was outside and we marked off the "runway" with chalk. The same way that people mark off soccer ball or other sports outline diameters. You can purchase the chalk in many colors. I used white. after I outlined the side lines I covered the isle by going from side to side. After the wedding the rain removed the chalk and this helped on the clean up as well.

It occurs to me, the kind of heavy plastic used for sealing windows might work as a reinforcement. I believe ours cost $15, but these are probably on clearance for much less by now.
I'd imagine you could cut part of this into strips and - as someone else said - use tape rolls to attach the runner to the plastic. Since the plastic is clear, it shouldn't be obvious, and will keep the runner dry.
Best of all, you can use the remainder to weather-proof next fall!

Go to a carpet store and buy a remnant or "end of roll" and cut it to fit under your runner. You can usually get these "scraps" for under $50.00. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!

My sister is getting married the same day as you and is also doing the paper runner but she said at a wedding she went to a couple months ago did the same with using paper and when they walked on it their shoes never went through the paper. So she is not planning on doing anything to the runner.

Someone named "UncleSteve" sent me the tip below to my thriftyfun mailbox. I believe they thought I was the one that needed the wedding runner information. They said:
Go to your local professional paint store and try some Red Resin paper. It has many uses. It comes in a roll, but the store may give you a couple of feet of it to try.

I would get cardboard boxes (usually for free at your local grocery store), cut them in strips a little shorter than the width of the runner. I would place them end to end and tape them together so that the whole strip is flat. I'd make the cardboard strip a little shorter than the runner.
Painter's tape is made to stick to things, but will pull up easily without ruining the surface. I would make several circles (maybe the size of a fist) with the tape, sticky-side out. Then place the circles along the edges of the cardboard with however much space between each circle. Then carefully place the runner on top. The bottom of the tape circles will stick to the cardboard and the top will stick to the runner.

I don't think I would use any paper product. Try purchasing an inexpensive drop cloth at the home improvement store and use double stick tape to adhere it to the bottom of your runner. As long as it is not pouring rain it should work.
OR - if the ground is very uneven or the weather on the damp side, maybe laying sheets of plywood down would be better, though much more expensive. You could connect them with mending strips - those metal strips with screw holes in them are found at any hardware store.

Gee, this sounds like a problem. High heals on soft ground will most likely go right through it.. If it were me, I'd put landscaping cloth under it. This stuff is pretty strong & isn't that costly. A second choice; maybe tar paper. It comes by the roll. I don't know how strong it is. You could also put plywood under the runner & if it still looks like new after the wedding you might be able to return it to Home Depot. Last idea: maybe several plastic shower curtains from the dollar store under it? Also, cut the lawn very short. I be sure the dirt isn't soggy & kept fairly dry. What is the wedding runner made from?
