You could drape some vintage dresser scarves or doilies over a curtain rod. You could also hang bunches of dried flowers : tie the stems together with pretty ribbon. Screw some cup hooks into the window frame and hang the bunches flower heads down.

If privacy is not an issue and you'd like some color to filter into the room try stringing glass beads, different sizes and colors and shapes. Get a tention rod the kind that fits inside the window frame. Use clear line(even fishing line works) and string the beads. You can space them apart by using smaller beads inbetween. Tie to the rod as close or as far apart as you like for the design you like.
If you want (Im not sure about S. Africa) but the make a film for windows that looks like stained glass that is easy to use.
Or if you are real creative there are glass painting kits for stain glass that you can do yourself. But I love the beaded look and have even used chandlier pieces that I found at a salvage. :)
