1. Aerodynamic drag increases exponentially with speed: double the speed, you quadruple the drag. Driving with the windows open will save fuel at around town speeds; it will cost you fuel mileage at typical U.S. highway sepped (55 & up).
2. If you drive a pickup truck, leaving the tailgate down or using a net tailgate will cost you mileage. (There's a bubble of stable air in the bed with the tailgate closed that is not present with the tailgate open. That bubble of air reduces the early separaton of airflow that creates drag.
3. The advice on filling the tank before it reaches 1/4 tank is entirely incorrect. By keeping the tank relatively more full, you carry more weight. The more miles you run with the tank nearer to empty, the more miles you run in a lighter car, thereby increasing the fuel mileage. Ideally you might to never want to fill your tank MORE than a quarter or half tank full, so long as you don't have to drive additoinal miles to obtain gasoline. It will result in increased mileage; as long as you aren't driving the extra miles to get gas, you will use less.

Keep tires properly inflated. Low tire pressure creates drag and requires more gas. If tires are kept properly inflated, it can save as much as 3 to 5 cents per gallon. Think of it as getting a half-gallon of gas for free when you fill up. Otherwise, you lose a half-gallon because of your weak tire pressure.
Plan ahead for traffic. When vacationing or driving through big cities, call ahead to find out about traffic snarls or road construction. Idling in stop-and-go traffic is the number one fuel eater.
Drive the speed limit. The faster you drive the more fuel you use. Driving at 65 miles per hour (mph), rather than 55 mph, increases gas usage by 20 percent. Driving at 75 mph, increases fuel usage by another 25 percent.
Lower the air conditioning temperature. It takes about 5 to 8 horsepower to run the air conditioning. Rolling down your windows isn't such a good idea either. Both create drag and require more gas to keep up your speed.
Dont use your air-conditioner unless you have to.

With the prices of gas these days, instead of driving all over town to pay your bills, either pay online or just mail them all. When comparing the price of stamps to a tankful of gas, paying online or mailing bills is the way to go.

I have a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan. I went from 17.5 miles per gallon to 20.9 miles per gallon by doing a few simple things.
1.) Accelerate slowly from a stop.
2.) Drive at, or just under the speed limit. I try to
keep my Tach at 2000 RPM's.
3.) Use your air or heat only when necessary.

Hey New York Jimmy,
the price is per LITRE - ie less than a quart, 4 quarts in a gallon.
Is the price still so cheap?
Anyway, I guess you could move here, we have really cheap private health insurance (less than $300AUS per month for top benefits if you are age 40years or under), and a government health insurance scheme if you can't be bothered to pay extra, and liberal universal unemployment/sole parent/ disability/ age pension benefits, I could go on.. BUT tax rates are nearly as high as in Sweden, plus a Goods and services tax on nearly everything..

I agree with you about the drag from an open window cutting your gas mileage down..my tip might work for you. We have to drive about 35 miles to get cheap gas so when we fill up, we take a 2 gallon can with us. Each time we fill up we do the same thing and pretty soon we have enough gas to fill up a whole tank if needed. it's kept in the garage where it's cool and can be used for the Generator or 4 wheelers for the visiting Grandkids to ride.

Gas - or petrol as it is called here in Australia is also very expensive.
I cannot comment about air con - I don't have it, so I can't compare.
However, in Australia the oil companies have an interesting thing called a "Discount Cycle". This means that althought the companies strenuously deny it, the petrol prices move up and down daily according to a cycle.
In Adelaide (where I live) the cycle peaks on the weekend, and the lowest price is usually late Wednesday night or Thursday morning. The prices can vary up to 10 cents per litre. Presently my local station has a high of $AUS1.08.9 (YES - they actually charge you in tenths of a cent!!!) and a low of 98.9 CENTS AUS per litre.
I usually try to make my tank last until Wed pm, otherwise, I will buy $AUS5 worth to get me through and fill up when cheaper.

I think I read a tip somewhere that said it did in fact use more gas to have your windows open, expecially at high speeds. One thing you can do is turn on your AC for a minute until the car is cool and then use the circulation option on your car fan. Let the air circulate until it gets warm and then turn the AC back on when you need to cool it back down.

Actually, what doggy said is not true. According to all I've read and heard, the drag on the wind coming in the window makes the car use more gas. Better check it out.
