I'm a SAHM and I love it. I love to cook, craft and even clean. I'm always looking for new recipes, crafts to make, and household hints and tips to make life easier.
I've been happily married for over 20 years and have two wonderful children.
Life is grand and I do believe in happily ever after because I live it.

RE: Leaves are Free Fertilizer
The more leaves the merrier in our garden. Gardener's gold is what my husband says.

We have a friend who works for the city and he uses a ride on lawnmower with a grass collection bag. They use to put all the leaves and grass clippings into garbage bags and just throw them into a dumpster. I asked if any chemicals or pesticides were used and, no there wasn't, so now they put those bags in a spot for us to back our truck in and load up. We just get a phone call when it's time to pick the load up.

In the spring it's grass clippings in garbage bags, at the beginning of the garden season we use this for mulching around bedding plants. I rarely have to pull a weed around anything; got to love a weed free garden. This also helps to keep the moister in on those hot dry days and the heat for a head start on the colder spring days.
Then in the fall after the garden has been pulled my husband tills in all those bags of leaves. That's also when we pick out a spot to plant the garlic and insulate it with leaves.

I've also heard of people putting the leaves into a big garbage can and using a weed-eater to mulch up leaves. Our lawnmower also has a grass collector bag and by running over the leaves it picks them up and chops them as well.
It's a win, win; no raking leaves, a garden that flourishes, and virtually a weed free garden. ... View related article.

RE: Check Your Receipt Before Leaving the Store
It actually pays here when you check your receipt. If the store makes a mistake. You give them the receipt and they have to give you the item plus give your money back. I walked out one day with 6 lbs of butter at over $4.00 a lb. A cool savings of $24.00. Butter is expensive in Canada. The people who program the computers are pretty good when they know it'll cost the store. I still check because it still tends to happen every now and then. Like I said "it pays". lol ... RE: Buy Family Members Different Socks
When I was a kid we just had a big container with a hinged lid. It was called the 'sock box' Everybody's socks went in. The only time I ever heard anyone complain was my Dad. We would use his work-socks (the fuzzy ones) for gloves when our mittens got wet. Lol.

The sock box was in the hall near all the bedrooms. They called it a hassock back then and you could sit on it well you put your socks on. It was easier then trying to figure out whose, is whose. Just put them together and throw them in the box. Hope this helps too. ... View related article.

RE: Recipes Using Mashed Potatoes
My Aunt use to make these when I was a kid, many moons ago. These were so yummy. They taste just like that round chocolate bar "Pep". Here in Canada they sell it in Green and silver foil. She would leave some of the filling white but then divide up 2 more bowls and add green and pink food colouring to make them look pretty when they were broke open.

Chocolate Covered Peppermint Patties
* 1 cup mashed potatoes
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 2 tablespoons melted butter
* 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
* 8 cups confectioners' sugar
* 8 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate
* 2 tablespoons shortening

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl, mix together the potatoes, salt, butter, and peppermint extract. Gradually mix in confectioners' sugar; mix in enough to make a workable dough, between 6 and 8 cups.
2. Knead slightly, and roll into cherry-size balls. Flatten balls to form patties. Arrange on sheets of wax paper, and allow to dry overnight.
3. Place chocolate and shortening in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in microwave, stirring occasionally, until melted and smooth. Dip patties in melted chocolate, and let cool on wax paper. ... View related article.

RE: Recommendations for Vacuums
I too recommend the Dyson. I've owned mine for a year and it's incredible. The Dyson picks up so much dust and dirt you wonder where it comes from; my old rugs look great again. My Dyson is the upright model with the ball and it's especially designed for people with pets. More suction I guess? I do wish that the hose that is attached was a little more flexible for when you want to use the brush or floor attachments. All and all I would rate it a 10+ though.

RE: Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of such a beautiful and talented lady. There are no words to help with the healing of your pain. From experience I must say that only as each day unfolds it gets a little easier to bare. Remember when things get unbearable you only have to close your eyes and feel the love of millions of hugs around you. Take care.
