RE: Dampness and Mildew in a Closet
We had this problem but I found a simple idea you should try. I watched a home repair show that explained that the steam from a shower can travel through the house and will condense in the coldest part of the house -- even if the cold part is on the other side of the house.

I replaced the switch on our bathroom fan with a timer switch. Now whenever someone takes a shower, they are under strict instructions to set the timer for at least 20 minutes. This has greatly reduced the overall humidity in the house.

In our case, the coldest part of the house was the back closet. No steam going through the house equals no dampness for the mildew to grow in. The closet no longer feels damp or smells.

The timer switch was $20 and I was able to install it myself. You should either be able to do it yourself or find someone who can be bribed with cookies. ... View related article.

RE: Help Selling a Home
Ever watch one of those "sell this house" shows where for a small amount of money they take care of the "little" things that are stopping a very nice house from selling? Staging your house to sell is less expensive than a new car offer.

No everyone likes the same decor, often just removing clutter will help. Paint the house in neutral colors. Pack up all your personal photos and collections. You are selling the house, not your wonderful family.

I remember seeing a house on a show where everything was PINK -- even the kitchen. This woman had so much stuff on the walls that you could barely see the walls. Once they toned it down and packed up all her "Victorian country" clutter -- it was a whole separate place!

Are there any "small" repairs that you have not done? When we were house-shopping last year the "little" repairs jumped out at us. We rejected several houses and ended up with one that had been "flipped" -- all the repairs were done. Are there any LARGE repairs? How is the curb appeal?

Remember most people want to move into a "fresh" house. New paint (neutrals), new floors (or at least professionally cleaned), everything in working order. The majority of house buyers are not looking for a "fixer upper". You almost have to "undecorate" your house.

There is a reason why the house is not selling -- it does not sound like it's location or price. You need to get a brutally honest opinion from someone in the know. I hate to be a pessimist but it might simply be a bad economic time to sell, I've been following the news on this and your area seems to be one of those harder hit. I have high hopes for you, good luck! ... View related article.

RE: Help Organizing 40 Years of Photos
These are great ideas. I wanted to add that as the grown-up kid of a divorce and various remarriages by parents that excluding one parent may be taken as a hurt by the children involved. A child knows that he/she is the product of two parents and if one is excluded -- then they child may wonder if something is wrong with them too. I would include all the photos where the children are present and also a few of just the couple.

I remember being comforted by seeing happy couple and wedding pictures of my parents as a child. It said that even if things didn't work out for them later, there was a time when my parents were happy together. If the new spouse is insecure, than I think making an album just for the kids is a great idea.

I cheated on this when I had to sort through several boxes of family pictures after grandma had a stroke. I scanned them all, sorting them into folders by family branch as I went, then burned a cd for the interested people. They can go get real "pictures" to make albums. I don't have the artistic skills! ;-) ... View related article.

RE: How Do You Clean a Breadmaker?
I use a damp sponge and a little elbow grease. ;-) The trick is to clean it often. I'm interested to see if anyone else has a better answer myself! Be sure to unplug it before you clean it. ... View related article.

RE: Removing Purple Marker From Lambskin Chanel Purse
Have you tried one of those "magic erasers"? I think they are about the neatest things for getting stubborn stains off of porous surfaces (i.e. leather). Plus as all you are using is water to wet it, you will not damage the purse if it does not work. ... View related article.

RE: Use Neosporin To Treat a Sty
Teabags are another very good home remedy that I have used. You just make tea and then use the warm bag as a compress on your eye. Nice thing is that if any tea gets in your eye, it won't sting and teabags can be found just at just about any fast food stop. Be sure to use the "plain" tea and not the flavored ones. I'm told it's the tanins in the tea that do the trick. See here: http://www.doctor-clinic.org/eye-disorders/stye.html ... View related article.

RE: Wart Removal
Sorry guys, duct tape does not work. See this article: Study: Duct tape wart cure overstated http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-03-19-duct-tape_N.htm

Duct Tape for Warts? Maybe Not
Study Casts Doubt on Duct Tape as Home Remedy for Warts : http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems- ... -with-duct-tape-may-not-be-effective

My then nine year old son had a very large wart on his thumb. We were told by the doctor to try duct tape, and I followed the instructions to the letter: Keep covered with duct tape for 6 days, on the seventh soak and rub the wart with an emery board, then repeat. We kept duct tape on his thumb for 4 weeks! All that happened was that the "core" of the wart fell out but it never did go away. I ended up insisting that the doctor freeze it off. It was gone in one treatment.

Now some folks will say it works and another study found the best success with "new" warts. So it's your choice. Here's a website with people who swear by it. http://www.ducttapeguys.com/hmo/index.html

Personally, I think this is one time when the cost of a doctor visit is worth it. I'd rather have it over with in 1 treatment than spend months fiddling with it. But trying duct tape will not hurt you (unless you are allergic to it.), you might be one of the 6-10% that this works on.

I hope you are wart-free very soon! ... View related article.
