RE: Dog Jumping on People
Dogs jump on people for attention. You have to learn not to give any attention to your dog when he jumps on you. When your dog jumps, fold your arms, look pointedly away, frown, turn slightly away, brace yourself, and imagine making the room temperature drop with your disapproval. Do not respond to the jumping, don't touch the dog, say anything or look at him. After a few jumps, the dog will back away in puzzlement and you must immediately praise, smile, open your arms, imagine making the room sunny with your pleasure in his company. He will probably immediately jump on you again and you immediately freeze him out again.

The faster your responses, the faster the dog learns. Most dogs will learn to keep their feet on the ground in just minutes, because they only get what they want from you (attention) when they are on the ground. Some stubborn dogs take more repetitions, but they learn if you are consistent and it is the quickest method as well as the safest. Some people, including (sadly) dog trainers recommend stepping on toes, kneeing the chest, the stomach or grabbing the paws and holding the dog so they can't get down.

These methods don't work for many dogs because they give attention, but also they are dangerous. I've seen toes broken, a diaphram injury and broken ribs. Even if you knee gently, when you put your knee out, the dog may come down on your knee with force and cause injury to himself. And it just isn't as effective. ... View related article.

RE: Shredded Wheat as a Dog Treat
When we were training my mom's hearing ear dog, a min pin, we used cheerios because they were not fattening, and were small enough to give several in a session of training. She loved them. ... View related article.

RE: Training a Dog to Not Poop Inside
If she is still using the pad, start moving it slowly towards the door, a foot or so a day until you are at the door, then just outside the door and on out to where you want her to poop. Make sure anytime you catch her pooping on the pad or outside that you praise the heck out of her. Keeping her close to you with an umbilical (a leash tied to your waist) so you know what she is doing at all times is a big help, too. ... View related article.

RE: Hysterectomy Advice
Having the hysterectomy was the best decision I ever made. I had it vaginally and had very little pain after. I'm a veteran, so I ended up in a private room hooked to a morphine pump, but I only used it a couple of times. The VA volunteers gave me a heavy little pillow to hold against me when I coughed, and to lie on my tummy when I was resting. The weight of that little pillow really helped. One thing, if you are an asthmatic, tell your anesthesiologist and she or he can send a puff of medication down the tube before pulling it out of your throat after the surgery. Before I had one do this, every time I went under I woke up with an asthma attack. Since then, those puffs have prevented any attacks. ... View related article.

RE: Copying Recipes or Articles from Waiting Room Magazines
The problem with getting copies like that is that is copyright infringement. In other words, theft. I have found that many doctors are glad to let you have the old magazine, especially if you bring in others. ... View related article.

RE: Agencies That Assist With Stray Animals
Sounds like my house, 4 dogs (one a new stray) 10 cats including kittens. A feral colony outside. We participate in a trap, neuter and return program here, get out vaccines and spay/neuters done for free. Learn to give vaccines for boosters if you need to. Some food banks provide food, as do some humane societies. Go on Craigslist and freecycle. If you get shot down for asking as a rescue, just ask as a person needing the food. If there is a local TNR group, check into joining forces.

f you want to adopt some of them out you may try what I do. Kittens I can usually take to our humane society and they are returned to me if not adopted, but right now they are overwhelmed. If your shelter has room, though, try to talk to them as a professional. Do not treat this as a hobby or you won't find the help you need. You might consider getting yourself registered as a 501(c)3 organization. If you do that, you can list you adoptable animals on PetFinders. If you don't do that, you can go to your vet and have them use their letterhead to get you onto PetFinders. PetFinders has a page that explains how to do this. Also, blogs, facebook, twitter, all have had some reputed success, though I have not yet placed any of mine that way. If you try any of them and have any luck, post me a memo at my blog http://starfishrescue.blogspot.com With any luck, the economy will turn around and people will be wanting kitties again. ... RE: Substitute for Candied Fruit Peel in Recipe
If you are buying the candied peel, you might try making your own. It has a much fresher, zippy taste without that nasty aftertaste in commercial candied fruits. If you like a touch of bitter, leave some of the white membrane, if you don't like bitter remove all the white you can. Cut the peel in strips and cover with water. Bring to boil, boil 15 minutes and drain. taste the peel, if too bitter, repeat the boiling process until the bitterness is reduced to suit. Boil 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar (add or substitute honey if desired) to make a syrup, add the peels and simmer til the syrup is boiled down thick. You can drain the peels, or add the peels and any syrup to your recipe. If there are any leftover peels, roll in sugar or dip in chocolate for a tasty candy. ... View related article.
