kljohn, Another good low cal/low fat dressing is to just pour enough balsamic vinegar for you and hubby, then whisk in olive oil. Adjust oil to taste. My favorite! Hamnurse ... View related article.
I heard the quip about the shampoo co. adding the word"repeat" also many yrs ago. Johnny Carson used it while exchanging remarks with Ed if I remember correctly. It amazed me then but I admit I still "repeat" but I use less shampoo each time and I water down my shampoo to make it last longer. Hamnurse ... View related article.
Lynda, Keep good nutrition in mind even if still on a tight budget. 13 y/o kids still need more calcium than adults is one issue. If you can tolerate it, you can mix powdered milk with a qt. of regular milk for a savings, as well as eliminating or at least restricting meat from the diet for even more savings. Buy "staples" (rice, flour, cornmeal, pastas of all sorts, including Ramen and don't forget beans and legumes for good meat substitutes) to really stretch those $saving meals. Buy canned or fresh in season veggies for added vitamins and minerals. Drink water before and after meals because most people do not drink enough good ole"Adam's Ale". Cut out all empty calories like chips, candy, sugar,or what is known as junk food including colas. Limit tea and coffee.
Water will quench your thirst and you will soon learn to crave it instead of colas, etc. Plus your kidneys will love you and probably be your lifelong friends! For snacks, try a handful of mixed nuts (I buy them minus the peanuts) or even a handful of cereal(most are fortified with added vitamins and minerals)as well as fresh or dried fruits. Celery and peanut butter is a nutritious and good snack. Try to get a citrus fruit every day. Cut white potatoes out and sub sweet potatoes instead. These are not a true potato but related to a flower and does not contain starch. Much healthier and will keep you from craving white potatoes plus they are filling. Try sweet potatoes sliced in "coins" and microwave for about 4 mins on high then brown in a little olive oil in your frying pan. Yummy!
Eat two or three servings of fish every week either canned or fresh (or how do you feel about a week-end of fishing with the teen for some quality time and some low cost meals if you catch some fish?) You don't care for fish? how about shrimp, crab, scallops, mussels, etc? Eggs are low cost and filling and can be used in a zillion ways. Hope you can glean something useful from this post and good luck with your new found time with your teen. Hamnurse ... View related article.
Pprimer, When I was a kid, we knew an old Hungarian woman who Mama paid to iron for us, "Granny" babysat my little brother sometimes, and after Mama bought everything on her list, "Granny" would make us a big pot of authentic Hungarian Cabbage Rolls. Umm! She was a jewel and we were blessed to have known her. I make these now and will share the following recipe with you...enjoy.
Shop for a large head of cabbage and with the dark green heavy leaves still on if you can. Carefully remove the leaves one by one either with a sharp paring knife close to the core or if you prefer, carefully immerse the whole cabbage in a large simmering pot of water and steep for several minutes to soften the head. You will have to be very careful both immersing it and removing it from the hot water is you choose this method. Either way, the idea is to just soften each leaf of cabbage just until it becomes pliable enough to roll. I do my cabbage first and just stack the leaves to the side for later.
Mix in a bowl: approx. 1 1/2 -2 pounds of ground pork butt with approx. 1/2 pound lean ground hamburger. Salt and pepper.Add 1 or 2 minced cloves garlic and half a med. sweet onion with one egg. Then 1/4 C. uncooked white or basmati rice. Mix this just until thoroughly mixed but don't mix it so much that it compacts your meat. In still another bowl, mix together 1 large can of tomato juice, 1 large can of whole tomatoes and mix in a couple of Tbls. of tomato paste to intensify the tomato flavor. I have been known to also add a can of tomato sauce to keep up the tomato flavors! Add salt and pepper to this too.
Now to roll your cabbage rolls: take one leaf at a time and place a good lump of your meat/rice neat the core end of the leaf. Fold it over once and fold an end towards the middle, then fold the other end toward the middle. Now continue to roll. Carefully place seam side down in a large heavy pot. Continue rolling up your cabbage rolls until you either run out of cabbage leaves or meat mixture. I often times have to get out another pot because I will have so many cabbage rolls. You will get a feel to how much meat mixture to place in each cabbage leaf. When you get your large heavy pot about 3/4 full of cabbage rolls, pour your tomato mixture over them to just cover the rolls. Now sprinkle just a light palm-full of rice into this tomato mixture too.
I omitted something; when you open the can of whole tomatoes, gently crush them with your fingers or use a masher if you don't want to use your hands. Bring this mixture to boil slowly. Slowly! or you will scorch your bottom layer of rolls. Cover, reduce heat so they just simmer and cook for 2-3 hrs. Your house will smell heavenly! Serve with hot buttered cresent rolls or a good crusty bread.
I serve by dipping at least two rolls with a ladle of the tomatoes into a soup bowl and have the hot buttered crescents or crusty bread and watch them disappear. Very hearty. You may also like to add other seasonings (like sweet paprika) to the tomato mixture. Just season with the flavors your family enjoys. My bro. likes to add some red pepper flakes to his...my sis likes to dice green sweet bell peppers to her dish. Just enjoy and let me know how you made yours if you use this recipe. Correct me if I am wrong, but did we not hear on TV, etc. that this method does not raise the temperature high enough to kill bacteria found in tea? I was under the impression we are supposed to bring the water temp to a near boil for a minute or two, then add the tea, then steep for 5 minutes. Just wondering. ... View related article.

Did you know you can also use the entry door to your house to open stubborn lids on jars? Open your door wide enough to accommodate the jar lid. SLOWLY begin closing your door. The instant you feel the door tighten around the lid, try to open the lid. If you need to tighten the door a little more, do so very slowly. When you feel and see the lid loosen, stop. You'll want to finish unscrewing the lid with your jar upright to avoid any spills. ... View related article.

Go to www.totalpetsupply and click on any product you prefer. I don't know if you have a dog or cat; order specifically for the type of pet you have. (This site is more economical for the product I use than Petmed). Treat your pet! Also scatter Diatomite (also known as Celatom around your yard. Get this product from your local pool supply store for around $13.00. The consistency is like corn starch. Put a TBLS or so on a spot on your floor and vacuum it into your vacuum cleaner bag to kill any fleas you vacuum. Salt under couch cushions, etc if you don't want to use and indoor bug killer (for breathing problems, reactions to coming into contact with insecticides, etc but you can purchase indoor products you know...your choice)
Just do your house, your pet and your yard all on the same day. Do your house and your yard again in 3-4 days. See how things are progressing in 2 weeks. Assess every 3-4 days until you see good results. Only treat your pet once a month and don't use other products on your pet during the month.
The monthly treatment will work in 24 hrs with dead fleas. You may want to buy one vial from your vet until your ordered product has time to arrive from shipping site. My product arrives less that 15 days, so my first vial came from my local vet. You should be able to buy one, not the pkg of three or six but even if you have to buy 3 at least you can start your battle against fleas before 15 days. You really need to do your pet, your house, and your yard all on one day. Then your pet every month.
Summer is awful for fleas; get started ASAP and be consistent with that Diatomite and salt or indoor insect killer every 3-4 days if you really want to win this battle. Good luck. E-mail me if you need to; I have a contact site on this website. ... View related article.
Yes indeedy, jmart. We went to a fancy/smancy Italian restaurant in the mall in the trendy section of Tampa, Fl. The floors and walls in the room they put us in (for a fancy b-day party with 100+ guests) were plywood! They were stained and sealed and glossed with polyurethane I presume. They had very large mirrors interspersed on the wall of the same plywood and chandeliers.. Breathtaking! Call a lumberyard and ask what products to use. I've already decided to one day redo the indoor outdoor carpet in our Fl room this way when we can afford to rip this old carpet out and buy the plywood and products to get this beautiful effect. I don't believe we will use large ornate mirrors and chandeliers though. LOL But to answer your question, Yes indeed! Good luck! Let us know if you do this and maybe include a pic of your new floors. ... View related article.
