RE: Frugal Flea Treatment for Dogs
I've also heard that Dawn dish soap is wonderful. Try the lemon scented for a fresher "dog" smell. Just be sure to rinse very, very well. ... View related article.

RE: Wildlife: Starfish in Alaska
Thank you for sharing. They are beautiful. I'm jealous. You got to see them in real life. ... View related article.

RE: Weight Gain After a Hysterectomy
I had the "Big H" a year and a half ago, because they found a fibroid 'about the size of a newborn's head. Well, 1) It was the best thing I ever did, no more periods, no more odors or yeast infections.
2) I lost 4 pounds in the hospital then I felt so much better, I started losing weight because I was more active, like one other member mentioned, 'listen to your body', I was in the hospital 3 days, but the day after I came home, I did dishes, straitened up some, and took a little walk around our building, when you're "up" go for it, when you're tired, rest.

Yes, I know several women who have at least doubled in size since their hysterectomies, but they also just "laid around watching soaps, and eating bon-bons"! My sister-in-law is still just as skinny, shapely and pretty as before hers. ... View related article.

RE: Product Review: Riddex Plug-in Repeller
Me too, only I bought 4 of them because we keep doors closed in each room. What a farce/scam. I caught 6 mice in the old fashioned traps, 4 of which were within 2 feet of the Riddex thing! And they did nothing for bugs either. I still had flies, a wasp, and some kind of black "beetle". ... View related article.

RE: Satisfy Sweet Cravings With Dried Fruit
I was recently put on a "food plan"/diet. I found that regardless of what I'm craving, or if I'm not sure what I want, I can stick to my diet and "kill" the craving by eating 2 large pimento stuffed green olives! Sometimes I will put just one in my mouth, and just hold it/suck on it for an hour or more, and I no longer crave anything. Anytime I know I want sweet, I'll do the olives (I guess the saltiness counteracts the sweet tooth).....less calories too. ... View related article.

RE: What Are These Glasses?
I would say that your glasses are what's been called "swanky swig".....definately try ebay for antique glasses, swanky swig, or you could search by glasses + what ever the picture is....remember to check completed listings. I just did this with a few of my collections, and found the only listing was already completed (which means it was listed & sold, or listed, didn't sell and wasn't relisted)....in other words that's where I found 1-of-a-kind stuff. The second place would be the library to check if they have books of antique glasses....these kinds of things were not only found in boxes of detergent, but some were also given away with purchases at gas stations, and some came with jelly or cheese spreads inside. ... RE: Worn Spots on Tub Bottom
I had the same problem, and our apartment maintenance guy gave me "enamel paint". What a waste of time! It yellowed (on a white tub) and looked awful. At the time I also had a white car, and had a small bottle of touch up paint for the car.
yes, I used the car paint on the tub, and its amazing!! you can't tell its there, hasn't yellowed, and doesn't come off with cleaning! I got the car paint at Walmart, in a small ( maybe 2 ounce) bottle, that has a brush attached inside the cap. ... View related article.

RE: Training a Dog To Not Dig
My shih tzu started digging like crazy every time he was outside. I did ALL of the "tricks" others have listed, absolutely no success. That's because there were moles/voles in the ground! Once I trapped the critters (6 in one day), no more digging. At one time, I had a Pomeranian that did the same thing, and yes there were moles at that place too. These are not aggressive/mean dogs, they just don't like critters underground!

The poop in the digging area may work for some dogs, but also remember, your pet licks its paws! ... View related article.

RE: Sticking to a Weight Loss Program
You mention about heel spurs, and not sticking with exercise. I too have been dieting & trying to get some exercise. First thing, if you can get to a pool and or hot tub (we have a local motel that sells monthly passes). It is so much easier to exercise in water (I have fibromyalgia & arthritis in my spine). Second, I bought one if those "peddler" things (on Ebay $15.00) that sit on the floor in front of any chair (like bike peddles on a frame). Started out 10 minutes at a time. I'm up to at least 30 minutes of peddling while reading a book, and the time flies by.

When I was at a REAL dietitian, she focused on the fact that I was not very "mobile" and started me out on a eating PLAN (NOT D-I-E-T) where all I have to do is watch fat grams vs. calories....super easy! She recommended 1400 cal. per day, and per serving size: stay at or below 2-3 grams of sat. fat per 100 cal. Yes I do measure by cups and/or ounces, with all extra measuring tools bought at thrift shops, or things I've had (a frosting container is exactly 2 cups, an old salt shaker is 1/2 cup, etc.)
And keep a daily food & liquid journal. I keep mine right in the kitchen so I can scribble down the info as I make a meal or snack, open a bottle of vitamin water, etc.

At first I thought 'great, I can't eat this, I can't have that'...HA! I was amazed at all the food I CAN eat! I am satisfied every day, get in at minimum 30 min of SOME sort of exercise daily, and I've lost 11 pounds in just 1 month. I know it sounds too easy, I'm totally surprised too! And the best part is...I have never eaten 1400 calories, I'm always below.

I've been disabled over 10 years, and gained at least 40 pounds, but I'm finally losing it. As the days passed, I've also "snuck" in a little extra exercise just doing daily chores....calf lifts & stretches while waiting for the washer to finish spinning, "marching"/lift knees way up when walking thru the house, leg lifts while sitting in my recliner, just anything that's moving your body parts more than before. Another place to get some good stretching is in the shower (if you don't have to worry about a water bill). You really can incorporate extra movements into your daily life without making time to "workout". ... View related article.

RE: Health and Beauty for Less
I and other family members have worked in several canning, bottling, food industries, and in general, there's no difference in brands vs. generic! One factory I worked in bottled shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc. All the "ingredients" were mixed in one huge "vat", came out the same filler tubes, and many were bottled in the exact same bottles but had different labels put on, or we may have bottled 100 round bottles, then 100 oval bottles - each going to different companies, but were the exact same "product".

Same as vegetable canning, the cans are all the same size & shape, get filled the same, but go down different chutes for different labels.

You'd be surprised at the cheese making "biz". One vat/batch of cheese could have as many as 10 different bags used in packaging, yet it's all the same cheese.

The only real difference in products, (generic vs brand) I have found, is paper products--toilet paper, tissues, paper towel....parts of the body like "cottony" vs tree bark! ... View related article.
