RE: Deeli's Chicken Liver Pate
This is such a great Chicken Liver Pate recipe. It is identical to one I use that came from a 1995 Martha Stewart cookbook.

I have one word of caution/warning. I never reuse the brandy that the raw chicken livers have soaked (that is what caught my eye, as that is how the Martha Stewart cookbook instructs), then add to the finished, cooked pate.

I throw out the brandy that the raw livers have soaked in. Then, when I process the cooked livers, I add fresh brandy.
Just a word of caution. It is just a wonderful pate. Would not want anyone's opinion changed if they were to become sick from eating bacteria from raw livers, even if soaked in alcohol! ... View related article.

RE: Dog's Bottom Itches
It sounds as if your pup has anal glands that are impacted. The typical symptom is the dog sitting and scooting its bottom across the floor.

This is a catch 22 situation. Small breeds are very prone to this. My assumption is that they lack the strength to completely empty their bowels and glands when they have a bowel movement. Your vet or groomer can train you how to empty the glands so you do not have to pay for this to be done. Typically, a groomer of small dogs, such as poodles, will empty the glands as part of the grooming process. Good luck! ... View related article.

RE: Pooter (Weimaraner)
Hello. What a beautiful dog, and I'm so glad he found his way into your lives. Others have mentioned that grapes are toxic to dogs. I would like to add that raisins (being dried grapes) are also toxic to dogs. It was quite a surprise when I read about that. We had had 2 dogs prior to our boxer before I learned about onions, grapes and raisins! ... View related article.

RE: Urine Smell in Air Vent
I am sorry this has happened. Someone used our vent for a potty before we moved into our home. My daughter's room smelled terrible. We had to not only close off the vent, but tape cardboard over the vent.

We finally got the heating and air people to come out. If I had poured a liquid such as vinegar (which I have always used to neutralize potty accidents when sons where potty training), the heating and air people told me that the liquid would disintegrate my duct work. They had to cut a hole into the ceiling (in the basement, below the duct work). Then cut, remove; then replace the duct work. There is an insulation-type material in the duct work that the urine has soaked into. However, more liquid will just eventually eat away at the entire duct work. Good luck with your problem. ... RE: Do I Have Fleas?
I am more along the lines of Cyinda. Fleas can jump on people and bite people, but do not NEST on people, but carpet and furniture.

The first thing I thought, too, was lice. You say you 'feel like something in your hair'. Lice will nest in your hair...the bite is what itches. The lice is almost the same size as a flea, but fleas hop and lice crawl.

Someone can check your scalp for lice. Mostly you see the nits (eggs) which the lice 'glue' to your hairshaft. There are special shampoos which you can buy in most drug/grocery stores. Good luck! ... View related article.

RE: Getting Rid of a Cowlick
This is always the case; grass is greener on the other side. I have a cowlick and straight hair; I always wanted curls. As I got older, I realized I can't fight it; just go with it. My Mother didn't have a cowlick, but she always talked about how she loved her Mother's (my grandmother) cowlick and how her hair laid so well. Your hair looks great as it is. Don't fight it. ... RE: Rocky (Boxer)
Here is our boxer. Hubby had boxers as a child, so he prefers the cropped ears. Definitely more boxer-looking. Yours is truly a tribute to the breed...gorgeous boy! Thank you for sharing! ... View related article.

RE: Vegan Cupcake Recipe
You are very thoughtful to want to prepare vegan cupcakes for these two guests. I will say as a former vegetarian, that if they are attending a wedding of a couple that are not vegans, they will know that there is a normal wedding cake and they should understand this.

My concern is that if you go through the trouble of making a couple of vegan cupcakes, what if another guest eats them before the vegan couple arrives? Also, it would not look so good having special food just for them, and not sharing with the rest of the guests...many may be curious and want to try.

My suggestion, then, is to have a nice platter of in-season fruits. The vegan couple will enjoy this as their dessert. Also, everyone can partake. Many other guests may not wish to eat cake and have fruit instead, as well.

Just my thoughts. Good luck w/ the wedding! ... View related article.

RE: Dryer Isn't Drying Clothes
You may have cleaned off the lint in the vent and the lint trap/screen. However, if you are a regular user of dryer sheets (as opposed to liquid fabric softener), your problem may stem from their use.

What happens is that there is a waxy substance on the dryer sheets. This gets on your clothes to make them soft. It can also get on the lint trap/screen. To check for that build up which you can not see. Remove all lint from the lint trap/screen. Then, run water on the screen. If the water puddles and does not go through the holes in the screen, you know you have build up. Take a scrubby and scrub the screen until water will run through. This should help your dryer. My SIL had a heating element completely burn out due to this problem. It is the sole reason why I now only use liquid fabric softener. Good luck! ... View related article.

RE: Eating a Healthy Vegetarian Diet
Not eating meat is very misunderstood. Whether you are doing it for the sake of kindness to animals, or for health reasons, please do not get caught in the trap of filling up on grains. Pasta and bread, whether organic, white or wheat, simply turn to sugar in your body, you might as well be eating cake.

Do not fill up on starches. Eat a lot of healthy veggies. Since a lot of what makes you fill full when you eat meat is the fat, eat nuts and avocados to help you feel full. If you are not going to be a vegan (which is a person who eats NO animal products), add eggs and cheese for protein and healthy fats.

I was a vegetarian for 13 years. I went about it the wrong way. I would always joke that I was the fattest vegetarian around. I filled up on pasta and rice. Even if it is whole wheat or organic pasta, it is really empty calories. You can get fiber from so many other sources which will also give you nutrition.

Most dried beans are very healthy. All green veggies have a lot to offer. Fruits, especially the darker colored ones such as strawberries and blueberries, are packed with nutrition.

You really want to remember to have a lot of color on your plate when eating.

Good luck and eat smart! ... View related article.
