RE: Using Applesauce Instead of Oil
I've used regular old apple sauce. Replace the same amount of oil with it in the recipe. ... View related article.

RE: Installing Alternative Energy Sources
I've been looking into alternative energy for my home for a while now. Foxrun is right about the rules for having a wind generator. But there are smaller turbines that create less noise and can be attached to the roof instead of stand-alone.

In my opinion installing these things is not a DIY project. Unless you are extremely knowledgeable about electricity and fairly ambitious. And you have to do your own research to find a system that works for you. There are a ton of companies out there that specialize in Alt energy, they would be able to guide you toward the right type of system for your home. Besides solar and wind, you also might want to look at GeoTerm.

Beyond picking the type of system or systems you want to install, you have to decide if you are going off the grid completely, or Netmetering back to the Electric Co. I think that net metering is the better option, but that's just my opinion.

If you want to start off small, you can look into passive heat collectors that you can build and install. There are instructions on Instructables.com

Go to the EPA's web site, there is information and links that will tell you about different government (state and federal) grants that you might qualify for. Google is a great resource for finding companies and contractors that will help you.

RE: My Cleaning Made Simple
As someone else said, you can get by with a much shorter list of cleaning "staples" instead of buying all of those individual cleaners. I would stock a couple boxes of borax (1 for the laundry), baking soda, dish detergent, white vinegar, Bleach and Several spray bottles.

The only specific things that I insist on splurging on is glass cleaner (because I've never gotten vinegar and newspaper to work for me), oven cleaner, and scoring powder. But other than that, I can do all of my cleaning with he staples listed above and making my own general spray cleaners. ... View related article.

RE: Disposing of Bacon and Cooking Grease
Granted, I don't eat a lot of bacon in my house, but if you're frying enough to eventually fill a glass jar with the fat, why throw it away. Why don't you use it. My mom would save hers in a crock and use it to fry other things.

Cook some popcorn in bacon drippings and you'll never go back to any other kind again. ... View related article.

RE: Baby Booming
All pediatric vaccinations (with the exception of the HPV vaccine in some states) are offered for free in every state. Most pediatricians will refer parents to those Well Baby clinics rather than giving the shots in the office. ... View related article.

RE: Paper Or Plastic Bags?
If I'm not using my cloth bags, I ask for plastic. I use them around the house for small trash cans as well as turning them into Plarn. Paper to me is a waste of space and resources. ... View related article.

RE: Freezing Veggie Wraps
No. When you freeze than thaw veggies, it breaks down the cells of the vegetable and releases the water, which makes it soggy. You need to make them fresh. ... View related article.

RE: Soda Pop Rings for Cash
Foxrun is right. There isn't any monetary value for the rings. However, there are several dialysis charities who will exchange the rings for patient time on a dialysis machine. You could donate them. Also crafters would give their eye teeth for them. You could sell them on Etsy.com. Or email me, I'd love to have them if you have a bunch. ... View related article.

RE: Preserving Antique Christening Gown
Honestly, if I had something that old and precious, the only advice I would take was from an expert. You could go to a dry-cleaner to talk to them about storing the item properly. Only go to someone you trust. But as for restoring it, I would talk to someone at a museum. There should be someone at your local museum at is skilled at restorations. They will also tell you how to store the garment in a way that is out of light, pests etc, that will degrade the fabric.
