RE: Getting Teen to Help at Home
You are somewhat ahead of the game since he does do what's on a list or you told him about. Also, the disrespect seems like normal teen-age attitude toward parents, darn it!

I'm 80 yrs old and can remember my mother's way of trying to get me and my 2 brothers to "do your share" She had a bookkeeper's approach to that problem(I hated it but she disliked nagging). She made a chart for each of us & each week we were supposed to complete the chores on it...some every day and some a few times per week.a column for each of the seven days and the chores listed one per line. (the 28 slots per week type of thing.) She or my father would see whether our chores had been done, and put a check mark for each one that we had done. Each Sat.( or was it Sunday?) we would hear if they were satisfied or not. Some kind of token would be our reward.

I guess we hadn't reached the age of disrespect yet. The reason I hated it was the impersonal quality of a chart,, By the way rather frequently I got no reward due to poor compliance. I'm not sure how I would have reacted to being nagged at then (later my nagging husband got a very negative, sulking reaction from me and I usually tuned him out when he got started... perhaps I was stuck in adolescence??) ... RE: Getting Rid of Used Cooking Oil
Of course you know you should let the oil cool off before pouring into any plastic container..but most of us have an abundance of plastics that can be used for old oil or (other garbage,),such as water or soda or juice bottles (use a funnel) or the mayo, peanut butter, salsa jars etc, just keep a few on hand.

As for using a funnel. I cut the top 1/3 or 1/2 off the 12 oz. size plastic bottles like those for soda (use a sharp kitchen knife) and make a handy funnel but of course it won't work unless the container you are filling has a large enough "mouth" and it is a good idea to go slow and steady things with one of your hands. Don't forget, I'm talking about oil that has cooled down enough. ... View related article.

RE: Cleaning Aluminum Cookware
The tip about the self-cleaning oven would not be advisable for any pan with non-stick finish, also Wearever pots are quite thick and strong and perhaps can stand the high heat of such treatment
but thinner metal might be damaged this way, I've read tips that say adding enough liquid laundry softener to cover burns on bottom of pan and letting pan soak several hours makes it easier to clean it. I also read you can use 1 (or maybe 2) softener sheets plus enough plain water to cover the affected area instead of the liquid softener. Good Luck God Bless ... View related article.

RE: Organizing Useful Tips
Tips I want to keep track of I email to another member of family (you could send to a friend) then they forward back to my computer, then I file them, I have files for "cakes and frosting," "breakfasts," etc plus "electronic tips" "clean it up" "Safety first" "Food Tips etc, I read many useful tips that I'll need "some day" so I do need to file them, like many of us who are only human. We're not all computer whizzes and so we need some lower tech method now and then. ... View related article.

RE: Freeze an Envelope to Remove a Stamp
The steam or freeze tips are for lick an stick items, not peel and stick things. The gummy adhesive will not release it's hold like the old type of glue did. Sorry. ... View related article.

RE: Getting Extra Paint Off Your Paint Brush
Using the rubber band (stretched tightly across the top and slipped over bottom of can) also helps by keeping paint from filling the groove that the lid fits into, and thus doesn't dry there and won't make lifting the lid so difficult. Us ordinary guys like these kinds of tips, get it done without too much fuss and mess, you pros like a higher standard because its a matter of preserving the quality of your supplies. To each his own. ... View related article.

RE: Crafts Ideas for Kids
What Leahh could probably use and I would like to know also, is some free sites on the computer for good free directions for a variety of great but not costly or too hard crafts for this age group. For girls and also boys, maybe even as young as 7 -8 years old. Then maybe we can pry them away from all the other electronics and cell phone kind of stuff for an occasional hour or two of "quality time" shared with Grammy and Gramps.

Please post any info on this to this site, It will be a big help. Moony ... View related article.

RE: Cleaning a Crock Pot
It might be best to avoid S O S or similar scouring pads because they can create tiny scratches that may make it even harder to clean your appliance,
The hot water soak (even without soap added) is very effective. I fill crock to max fill level with hot water, drape 3 - 4 clean dry face cloths on lid to
cover lid entirely, and leave it unplugged and let soak a few hours,(the faceloths{or even a folded towel} help maintain the warmth which increases the effectiveness).

RE: Substituting Oil for Butter in Recipes
I don't think previous posters understood your question. I don't have the ratios but various oils
can be used in place of butter or other solid shortenings, there is a basic formula for the traditional products, such as butter, lard, plain margarine, etc Since I don't bake cookies or cakes don't know how the substitutions go, but if you call your library and ask them to help you find Tel.# for the Cooperative Extension (its a government org, and very hard to locate in Tel directory) but anyway...call Coop Extension and request the info..they are (or used to be)free
they can tell you or send you a print-out.

While you are at it, if you have any other cooking? ask about those also. They may only be in office certain days, (and in NY state you have to contact them by elevenish) Joy of Cooking (my 30yrs+old one) advises to only use specific recipes that use special techniques when using oil for baking cakes(no mention of coolies) and it has a number of such recipes , A later edition of Joy of Cooking is probably available at any public library, check out the detailed info in the section called Know Your Ingredients. It covers loads of stuff. Best of Health to you and yours ... View related article.
