RE: Install a Locking Gate Around the Swimming Pool
Great Idea. I am surprised that it's not mandatory over there. Here (Australia) it's against the law not to have a fenced, locked swimming pool. ... View related article.

RE: Bugsy (Domestic Long Hair)
Thank you for rescuing this beautiful cat. Here in my home state (Victoria Australia) pet shops in malls etc are no longer permitted to sell puppies and kittens, a practice that I wish was more widely followed.

RE: Negotiating With Yourself About Chores
Yep, I'm another one, Lets face it, women were the original multi taskers! My kids still laugh about how I would stir the custard while reading a book! Not too much burnt custard either!

RE: Be A Movie Extra For Fun And Profit
Hmmm. It is competitive though. I'm writing from Australia. My son has been an extra in several movies, The Matrix, is one. You sometimes have to be on the set very early..like 5am.. and there are other setbacks, very long days, but if you have the stamina, Yes, it's good, pay, good meals while you're on set, and you're in a MOVIE, even though people might get only to see the back of your head!

RE: Why do cats "knead"?
Kneading begins when kittens are born and when they start feeding from their mothers, It helps to release the milk. It continues on as a sign of comfort when they get older. Another reason they knead is to 'soften' whatever they may be about to lie on.Okay, it might already be soft, a blanket, your bed.. whatever.. but cats have primal instincts.. so virtually have instinctive collective memory of knowing how to try and soften a harder bed, the ground.. a pile of leaves, etc.
My grey cat has just finished kneading the quilt on my bed as I write!

RE: What to do when money is really tight?
What an excellent article. Thank you. As you said not everything will work for everybody. For instance I don't drive, and don't have a car (nor a loving partner with one) so buying things in bulk doesnt work for me owing to the sheer impractability of getting loads of things home. Nor do I have a freezer, and 'cent's off' coupons are not at all widely used here (Australia) as they are in other countries.
Okay.. that ;s the negative, the positive is as you said, there are still things we can do to save. One is, don't be proud! If someone asks you if you would like something (and you genuinely need it) say Yes.. I obtained for free a perfectly good pair of blankets and a set of white pine shelves (which I use as a book case) from a neighbour who was just going to junk them. Guess she was buying new stuff.
Further down the street from me is an elderly man who every now and then puts six or so lemons out on his brick gate post for anyone to take. So I do. Not all of them, that maybe would deprive others, but I take two or three of them.
I only wash in COLD water, never hot.. my clothes are perfectly clean. I put all my loose change away in a savings box.. I know this is an old one.. but it adds up and is very handy if there's a smallish emergency.
I live alone, so I eat very simply, eggs, potatoes, sardines, tuna, Very little meat (and meat is really-but really-- expensive here now.
So just a few more tips I guess.
Ellie.

RE: Coins Are Money, Too
And Me! I pick up any coin I find on the street, and I save/stash them at home too, as a form of savings and emergency money. A funny story here. I belong to a weekly writing group.. a lovely group of people, The class costs $7 a session. One week I was poor, really poor.. so I carefully counted $7 worth of 5cent coins and took them to class.
Later, an elderly lady who considered herself the 'doyen' asked who put all the 5 cent coins in the bowl. I told her I did, and she snapped. 'Don't do it again! I retorted. 'It's either the coins, or I don't pay at all this week. Take your choice!"
She backed right down.

RE: Water Conservation - What You Can Do
I agree with every aspect Paul. I live in Australia where most of our country has a dire water shortage, and my state, Victoria there are now severe water restrictions.. ie, cars must be washed with a bucket(S) of water, no hosing..lawns may not be watered AT ALL, gardens may be watered, at restricted hours and times, no refilling of back yard swimming pools without council permission, and then they have to be filled with a bucket. Makes me wonder just how many people are eager for a swim now!
The good thing is that the majority of people are doing their darndest, obeying the restrictions, utilizing grey water for gardens, installing rain water tanks, etc.
I'm a (rented) second floor apartment dweller, no yard or garden, but do what I can too.. my potplants are often watered with the water that comes out of my fish tank when I change the fishes water. I wash dishes (handwash) only once a day. I make sure no taps are dripping. I shower only long enough to get my body wet and clean.. I guarantee less than the suggested three minutes.
The environmental warning bells have rung loud and clear, and we ignore them at our peril.

RE: Homemade Chocolate
I think there was a mix up of people thinking I wanted a hot choclate drink recipe, when what I really wanted was the block chocolate recipe posted by Luvabye. I'm not sure what would be an alternative to copha. We get two grades of icing sugar here (Australia) pure icing sugar, and soft icing sugar, which is the pure icing sugar, mixed with I think.. cornflour. In the States I think it's called 'confectioners sugar'.
