Profile For shishi - Creative life

I like to make something out of nothing, and sometimes there isn't any other way to get what you need!  There's a lot of satisfaction in the process.  I also like to salvage household and outdoor items that others may think are worthless.  After subscribing to ThriftyFun, I know I have lots of company in these frugal pastimes.  I also enjoy my flower garden, which I have endeavored to make as xeric as possible, and a small vegetable garden, which I have pared down to the items that are most successful, i.e., tomatoes, cucumbers and green beans, both pole and bush.

I am married since 1979, with a married 26-yr.old son, a 21 yr. old daughter in college, and an 11-week old grandson.  I work part-time in a corporate gift shop, and my husband is a Topeka city employee.

RE: Using Clay Pots Outside
A paper towel or coffee filter works great to keep soil from falling through the drain hole, whether or not you use a saucer. Also remember that soil in clay pots will dry out faster than that in non-porous pots, so keep up with the watering, especially if they are in full sun. ... View related article.

RE: Wild Finch Mating and Nesting
I've wondered that myself, as we always have nesting pairs around our house. Here's a link to a page that explains it very well. Copy and paste it to your web address box.

RE: What Breed is My Dog?
He may be a powderpuff Chinese Crested or Crested mix. Their body hair is wavy and long to the ground. Some CCs are practically hairless, but not all. They are skinny seeming even when they're not, if you know what I mean. A very affectionate breed. Most people keep their hair clipped short for ease of care, because it tangles easily, even though they don't shed. I think you will love your little Rehab no matter what breed(s) he may be. I have uploaded a photo of a Crested of a similar color to Rehab. ... View related article.

RE: Ground Cover Advice
First: Do not plant ground ivy, Creeping Charlie, or Goutweed, whatever you call it in your region. It is extremely invasive and will bury any desirable plants and take over your lawn. That said, vinca (creeping myrtle) is good, although it, too, can invade where it's not wanted. It is easier to remove than ground ivy. Allysum is an annual. Plumbago, speedwell, dead nettle (lamium) or various sedums are all good, solid spreading perennial groundcovers that can be controlled as needed. I have uploaded a photo of plumbago with a young rose of sharon in the background. The plumbago had just started to open, it soon was covered with electric blue blossoms. ... View related article.

RE: Attaching Fabric to Painted Wood Frame
Get some ModPodge at the hobby store. Use a paint brush to apply to the frame. Do each scrap separately, i.e., brush on an area, apply the scrap, brush on another area, apply the next scrap, etc. You don't want to do a large area and have it dry before you apply enough scraps to cover that area.
When the fabric is all where you want it, brush on an even coat of ModPodge. Follow the directions on the container about multiple coats. It dries clear. Don't spill it on your clothes! ... View related article.

RE: Recommendations for Cheap Face Wash
Johnson & Johnson Purpose face wash is gentle and inexpensive. For large pores, blackheads and bumps, even pimples, put a layer of toothpaste (not gel type) on affected areas at night, then oil-free moisturizer on the rest. I was amazed at how the pores on my nose shrank and whitehead bumps disappeared over a few weeks. The top layer of skin where the bumps had been peeled off and it's new smooth skin. I have read about using toothpaste as an overnight treatment for actual pimples, so thought I'd give it a try on the pores and whiteheads. ... View related article.

RE: Large Ziploc Bags to Brine Turkey
The Ziploc bags are all made of the same material, so the XXL one should work fine for the turkey. Set it on a rimmed cookie sheet just in case of a puncture, and to prevent the rolling mentioned by an earlier poster! ... View related article.

RE: Clothing Causing Pimples
I get this, too, and it's just dead skin cells built up in the hair follicles, from the friction of your clothing. Use a bath puff on the areas when you shower or bathe, and use moisturizing cream on your belly bumps, but not on your thighs. The ones on the inside of your thighs (also from friction) are similar, but may be larger, and look more like real pimples because they have more of the dead skin buildup inside of them.

Some may get inflamed and even become infected, just treat like an open sore, even put a band-aid on to prevent friction on an inflamed area. I have found that I have less trouble with these if I wear 100% cotton slacks. Synthetics build up too much heat. There is a new gel you can buy to help with skin to skin friction, but I can't remember the name of it. ... View related article.

RE: Shampoo For Hard Water
Hard water is alkaline, as is baking soda, so I'm not sure that idea is the right one for TX Hill country. Vinegar or lemon juice might help. When I was a kid with very long hair, I forgot to take conditioner on a visit to a farm in Iowa. My hair seized up and all stuck together after rinsing. I was in a teen-age panic! My aunt gave me some lemon juice to mix in a cup of water, and it worked a miracle.
For organic hair care, check the health food store, or search online. Read labels carefully. You still might need to add vinegar to your final rinse. ... View related article.

RE: Clorox Stains on Carpet
The area rug sounds like a good plan if you don't want to replace the whole carpet. Clorox removes color, it doesn't lay a stain over it like punch does. ... View related article.
