RE: Crockpot Pumpkin Butter
Hi BrendaSue,
Perhaps you could give us your recipe for slow cooker apple butter? That sounds as delish as Pumpkin Butter! I know how my crockpot will get used this winter when not in use for stews and chili. *big grin* ... View related article.

RE: Use Adjustable Chair for Low Work
Great Idea! No matter what age you are! Thanks so much for this. I use a wheelchair to get around but at times wish I get into a lower shelf or cupboard. Now I know how to do that without asking for someone else to do it for me. Thanks! ... View related article.

RE: Freeze Water Containers for Emergencies
I've been doing this for decades, so I'll add another use for these. I don't toss some of those fruit juice containers or 2 liter pop bottles. I freeze them and whenever I need ice for a picnic a road trip, I have it already frozen and as it melts we have additional water from home we can drink instead of buying it. Yet another saving. *wink* O and today I'm defrosting my freezer, so guess what those frozen bottles will be doing today. They will go into my bathtub along with what's in my freezer to be covered by a heavy sleeping bag, till the freezer is done.

*NOTE* De-icing my freezer happens fast too, I boil water in pots, put them in my unloaded freezer and close the door. Sure gets the job done faster. Any questions just ask. ... View related article.

RE: Safely Disposing of Medications
Thanks for the link to the FDA site. I now have something to back up what I have been telling people. I put any leftover meds into saved ziploc bags which are clearly marked as having contained raw poultry, I do not clean them beforehand. I also smash whatever meds I put in there if they don't dissolve with whatever juices are in the bag. Then I place these in my garbage. I feel good that I am then not contaminating the environment.
Muchas Gracias! ... View related article.

RE: Make Your Own Summer Skirt
You might also try this. Before threading the elastic through the casing; sew a small square of fabric to one end of the elastic. With this done, you can then run the elastic through and no worries about the tail since the fabric keeps it at the end of the casing. Now, once you get this done, don't cut off the fabric;bring the elastic end which you've used to thread through the skirt casing, sew it onto the square right up against the tail. Cut the excess fabric off and wa la no bumps in the casing where the ends meet! Who needs a pattern for such! LOL ... View related article.

RE: Baking for a Diabetic
These are great ideas whether one is diabetic or not. If you are wanting something light and fluffy, just remember it's not just the sugar which we have to watch, it's the carbs in the ingredients as a whole. Since I prefer to have something which I don't have to sacrifice those carbs in another meal during the day, I add nuts, seeds and mult/whole grains to any of my baked goods.

I have found loading a muffin and just making it cupcake size instead of those huge ones, gives me more bang for the buck and I don't have to sacrifice the carbs from another meal in the day. If you don't want to add a lot of stuff to your baked goods, use flax seed germ to add fiber which will slow down the breakdown of the carbs. This allows the blood sugar to rise more slowly than would normally be the case.
I also use as much fruit juice or pulp instead of sugars since I don't like nor use artificial sweeteners.

Thriftmeg, you have given me yet one more tool in my kitchen when baking for diabetics or just for eating more healthier. Thanks. ... View related article.

RE: Which Breeds Make Good Service Dogs?
There are many breeds available for training as service dogs. Much depends on what type of tasks you want the dog to do. After sitting down and making a list of what I needed a dog to do, I made my choice. I, personally, have a mixed breed rescue. I chose this route because I have some experience in training dogs. If you don't have experience, I recommend finding a school or finding a trainer who trains assistance dogs.

Please understand, a service dog, once trained is a working dog and no longer just a pet. They are entitled to be with their partner wherever they go. Their function is just like any other assistive technology a disabled person uses.
That said, may I suggest you check out these yahoo groups to get more and perhaps better feedback for this question:

RE: Keeping Moths Away from House
I don't have a problem with moths, tho I do use as natural methods as possible. 1) I use peppercorns in anything I pack away for seasons; 2) I use lavender in my drawers and on my clothes hangers; 3) I also plant lavender and marigolds around all entrances to my home. These no only keep the moths away but also the mosquitoes. I do like getting as much bang for the buck as possible. :D ... View related article.

RE: Clean Out Clutter
The only thing I would add, is I now have a rule. "If you bring something home, something else has to leave, unless it's a replacement for something broken and already gone." For a pack rat, this is difficult to do, though after working on it for several years, it's getting easier to do. ... View related article.
