More and more bad news has been reported lately about the use of pesticides on our pets, even the supposedly good stuff from the vet. I read one heart breaker about a pair of dogs that actually licked the stuff off each others necks and eventually died. I would still be using Frontline or Advantage except it just stopped working here in Florida and i have heard from other pet owners who report the same experience. On my local reuse it group, the owner suggested using vinegar and dawn dish soap. I was extremely skeptical but I figured what the heck, it couldn't hurt. Imagine my surprise when i actually saw the fleas come right up to poke their heads out of my pets coat, seemingly choking for air and die on the spot. I am not kidding.
I even kept a few fleas to the side to observe if they were "drunk" or like ants, playing dead, you know you try to drown ants and as soon as they are dry they get up and march off! But the fleas stayed dead and I was so excited. I use this now. The basic ratio is 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup Dawn to a gallon of water. My dogs are bigger so i have to use a bigger batch but it works and seems to have a lasting effect, I have been using it once a week. I am glad to have a less toxic option for my girls. February 6, 2007 FDA is issuing this advisory to alert you to the potential hazards of using skin numbing products, also known as topical anesthetics, for cosmetic procedures. These topical anesthetics contain anesthetic drugs such as lidocaine, tetracaine, benzocaine, and prilocaine in a cream, ointment, or gel. Topical anesthetics are widely used to numb the skin for medical and cosmetic procedures, and to relieve pain and burning and itching due to a variety of medical conditions.
FDA has approved many products for these uses. Some must be prescribed by a doctor; others may be purchased without a prescription. Applying topical anesthetics for a medical procedure is usually done in a doctor's office by a trained medical professional. However, FDA is aware that use of these products before a cosmetic procedure may not be supervised by trained health professionals. Without this supervision, a patient may apply large amounts of topical anesthetics to their skin. Don't forget Freecycle! www.freecycle.org to find a freecycle in your community and craigslist free section, www.craigslist.org. You can get it all free from others who no longer need their items. If they upgraded and got a new tree you can get their old one, tree, decorations, used items that are still useful to give as gifts. You had better be very careful doing this, there have been deaths associated with using lidocaine, the victims never suspected a thing, and they did so because of advice like this. Actually, reusing priority mail boxes turned inside out is illegal and can get you into a great deal of trouble with the post office, a branch of the federal government. The PO reguarly scans and opens packages to check for this very thing. Now you may not get arrested, but you never know with the federal government.
