RE: Dog Keeps Whining in the Morning
Also stated "he could have it a lot worse". and if that's the worst he's got to deal with, he's not doing too bad. And nowhere in my post did I say that I expected a child to sit still for eight hours. What I did say was, that you would correct a child if behavior was undesirable. And, yes, she did say that the dog was inter-reacted with on a daily basis, (by the husband and roommate), as well as herself. And food and shelter to me is a good thing to provide for an animal; a lot of them don't have that much, and if you used to work for a vet, then you know how bad it can be for an animal. (imagine the worst, and it's been done to a dog or cat). You are perfectly entitled to your opinion, but I am also entitled to mine; don't knock mine, and I won't knock yours. ... RE: Dog Keeps Whining in the Morning
Oh, and P.S. - If this were a perfect world, then everything would be just lovely. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world, and we all have adjustments to make, animals included. So what if the dog is not allowed to whine from the hours of 8-11 a.m.? There could be far worse things for this dog to have to deal with. It sounds like he has a loving home, with an owner who cares, he probably gets regular vet visits, played and petted regularly, etc. We have to correct our children when they do something that is undesirable, why should dogs be any different? I agree that the methods used for dogs and children are totally different, but the basic concept is the same: you correct bad behavior, and an animal actually can be adjusted to a different schedule. Eight hours is eight hours, whether it's in the daytime or night-time. I would love for everything to be perfect too, but with this world, and the people in it, it just ain't gonna happen. Work with what you have, do the best you can, and recognize when you have to admit defeat. ... View related article.

RE: Dog Keeps Whining in the Morning
You could put several coins in a can and shake it loudly when he whines, or keep the old ever-handy spray bottle close by, and spray him with a quick shot when he whines. Is there a utility room or bathroom that you could put him in, where his whining wouldn't disturb others? (It seems like he knows that when he whines that someone is going to come; therefore, he will continue to do it until he learns that no whining is allowed).

Hang a bell by the door, and every time you let him out to potty, jingle the bell. He will soon learn that this means he goes out; this can be his signal to go out instead of whining. This should work even when he is crated; if you keep him on a regular schedule and not let too much time go between bathroom visits. Dogs are supposed to be able to hold themselves 1/2 hour for every month of their age.

Or, you could take him to a dog-trainer; they don't lose any sleep while the training is done, and while he is being re-trained, his whining isn't bothering others. (That's if you actually leave him there, as opposed to someone coming to your house for short training sessions.)

Or, what about a person who is trying to earn a little extra cash coming in and doing the shaker-can thing for you while you are trying to sleep? (like a teen-age relative, or a college student?) Extreme, I know, but you did ask for suggestions, and if you really love your dog, and want to keep him, then that really is something to consider.

* And this is for the person who recommended a bird instead: I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but a bird is totally NOT the pet to get if you think that they don't demand attention. Birds are like little two-year-olds; they have to have your attention all the time; if they don't get what they feel like is enough, they screech and yell at you, and then they start to bite, to show you that they are unhappy.

You have to sweet-talk birds OFTEN, and let them hang out with you on your shoulder while you do the dishes and the laundry, ( and let them help, because they will help, even if you don't want them to). Not to say that a bird is not a good pet; you just can't get one and expect it to be happy in a cage all day.

My bird is great company, and it does get annoying that he is so clingy sometimes, but I'd rather have the company than not. ( Sorry to use up your space schubunny, but I just had to set the record straight about birds.) :):):) ... View related article.

RE: Safe Powder That Dries Up Fleas
I haven't used it on my pets, but I'm fairly certain Diatomaceous Earth can be safely used on pets to kill fleas. It can be found in the garden section of any home-improvement store, (well, in the spring and summer it can). Google it just to be sure, but I'm pretty sure it can be powdered on the pet, and/or a small amount of food-grade DE in the pet's food weekly. ... View related article.

What about a fence of some kind; either a small border fence lining the front of your property, or a taller one with a gate. ( depending on whether or not the neighborhood association is an issue). Or plant a row of prickly hedge bushes if a fence is not allowed. ... View related article.
