RE: Giving Cookies as Gifts
I have tried all sorts of things, but the best were pretty new heavy decorated boxes ( mine were a nice bright red with gold lids) with tissue paper lining them. Then stack cookies or candies in rows standing them on their sides, using just one type of cookie per box. for example only shortbread in one, or only chocolate chip in one, so on and so on.
I used to buy pretty bags to stick the decorated plates into, but with all the money and time spent baking...presentation was just as important for the cookies to be recieved well.
oh, dont forget to tie the box closed with a pretty wired-ribboned bow!

p.s. tip for next years baking...buy the heavy cardboard decorative boxes after christmas, while on clearance. then store them in a clean safe environment till next year. do the same with the wire edged ribbons and you will have one less expense to worry about when the time comes. ... RE: Uses For Drapes and Curtains
I am in the process of using some old drapes as the middle lining of quilts. they are made of a nice heavy material, therefore should provide warmth.

RE: Where do you put frozen bread at to rise?
I have a gas range with a pilot light in the oven.
I put the bread in the oven and close the door ( no need to preheat) it will rise very well with the heat provided by the pilot light. I raise my homemade bread's first rise in the oven too. Before I had a gas range, the top of the refrigerator was used for rising bread.

RE: First Birthday Ideas
We held my son's first b'day party at the park. At that age they love to just run around loose and play on the kiddie toys, slide with an adult and be pushed in the baby swings. All the little ones had a blast and the adults were at ease too. And the best part was no extra cleaning before or after. we just decorated the shelter and threw everything in the trash can when we were done. You could call it "a day at the park", maybe have some pets for a petting zoo type thing.
Personally I think birthday parties have gotten a little crazy over the past several years with all the money people are willing to spend on one birthday party. I told my daughter, if you start out big...where you going to be when it comes time for that special big sweet 16 party.
We dont do big parties in our family unless it is a special year, otherwise its just cake ice cream and gifts with family. So the 1st b'day, 5th, 13th, 16th, 18th, and 21st are what are the big bdays in our family.
There are alot of things little ones can do that don't cost alot of money. For example bubbles, what kids don't like bubbles? Bubbles could be your favors too, that they can play with while at the park, then take home with them.

RE: Dispensing Nacho Cheese
once it has been heated pour into a pitcher and keep the pitcher in a couple inches of water in an electric skillet on low heat. then you can pick up the pitcher as needed and pour it out and return it to the skillet.
