RE: Water Stained Table Won't Take New Varnish
Were you trying to use an acrylic varnish or other water-soluble varnish? If so, the oil in mayo would repel the varnish. Try using a solvent-based varnish (the type where you need to wash your brush with turps). This should work.

RE: Ink on a Vinyl Purse
Try spraying with hairspray, then rubbing with a clean cloth before it dries. This should work for ink from a ball-point pen.

RE: Make Your Own Iced Coffee
Dissolve a large spoonful of instant coffee in a small amount of hot water. Add sweetener or sugar to taste. Top up with iced water and an ice-cube or two. Add a dollop of whipped cream (or substitute Cool Whip) and a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. Sprinkle with powdered or flaked chocolate if desired.

For a gourmet version, brew your own coffee from coffee beans, cool, then add rest of the ingredients as above (excluding instant coffee). You can also add other flavourings such as 1/2 tspoon of vanilla ot other essence, or a dash of liqueur or brandy.

RE: Weight Watchers Pineapple Sherbet
This isn't a WW recipe, but one that I devised that is very simple and low calorie. Freeze pine-apple chunks (either fresh or tinned in juice and drained). When frozen, whiz in food processor with sweetener to taste, and enough fruit juice or water to moisten and blend smoothly. You can also use cream or coconut cream instead for a creamier but higher calorie version. (Other fruits and berries, or combinations, can also be frozen and used instead. Frozen bananas make a particularly creamy dessert.) Serve immediately for a soft-serve sorbet, or freeze until firm and flake with a fork. Brenda in Oz. ... View related article.

RE: Manual and Cutters for Sunbeam Pie Maker #4808
I have a Sunbeam Pie Magic pie maker which is not the same model, but I'm sure they all work on the same principle. Mine is Teflon coated. The pastry cutters are simply circles, with the smaller one (top) being 9.5cm (3 3/4") and the larger one (base) being 12 cm (4 3/4") in diameter. Use frozen sheets of ready-rolled pastry (short crust or puff pastry - thawed).

Pre-heat the pie maker for 5 minutes, or until the indicator light goes off). Cut a couple of slits in the edge of the larger pastry base to make it easier to fit in the pie maker. Place the pastry into the base and overlap the slits, pressing them together so that they are joined properly. Put your filling in (do not overfill), then place the smaller pastry round on top.

Close the pie maker, and cook for about 6 minutes (8 minutes for a darker top). Remove the pies with a plastic spatula so as not to scratch the surface of the machine. If your pie maker is not Teflon coated, you may have to oil the pie molds.

I hope these simple instructions are a help to you. You may have to experiment a bit with the size of the pastry circles, but I'm sure you can cut around a suitably sized plate or cup for the correct size. Please email me if I can be of further help. Brenda in Oz. ... View related article.

RE: Undoing a Childproof Lock on a Microwave
Try switching off and unplugging the microwave from the electricity, then plug it back in again. Usually factory settings are restored, and your childproof lock should be off.

RE: Shop Wise
i am amazed at the number of recipes containing pre-mixed and ready-cooked convenience foods. It is much cheaper (and healthier) to cook from scratch and avoid all those added preservatives, imitation food essences, colours and other chemicals in canned and pre-mixed goods. For example, consider buying dried beans or chickpeas instead of the tinned variety. Soak these overnight, then boil the next day - pure, nutritious food at a fraction of the cost. I know it takes a bit of extra time to do this, but the savings are worth it! ... View related article.

RE: Finding the Value of an Encyclopedia Set
I work in a thrift shop and we often have old encyclopedias donated. We can barely give them away. People sometimes buy them for 20 cents each to cut up for school projects or art. Sorry, but unless you have a rare early or first edition, I would say they are worthless.

RE: Painting Glass Lamps
There is a spray paint which is transparent available especially for glass. I'm not sure of the brand name - I'll try to find out and post later. This paint will change the colour of the glass, but will still allow the crackled look to remain. I have used this paint to spray clear glass bottles.

RE: Tips For Purchasing A Down Comforter
I agree with the previous post - buy the most expensive down duvet you can afford. When my father was alive, he manufactured duvets, so I grew up with them -summer and winter (I'm now 60). But I would like to add that you CAN wash them - even if the label says to dry-clean only. The outer covering is a fine-count cotton japara, which will shrink very slightly, and the filling has already been washed prior to manufacture, so is safe to wash again. I take mine to the commercial laundromat where I use a large machine. I then dry it in the large drier together with a clean sneaker to "kick" around the down to stop it from clumping. It comes up perfectly every time (I usually wash mine once a year).
