Profile For Ann S - Ann

Hi,

I'm Irish but lived in America for a few years, 2 of my 3 children were born in the states.

One of the things I loved about living in the States was all the craft material you could buy at reasonable prices. I learned to Cross Stitch while there and have taught my daughter how to do it too. I can't wait to go back and shop in January.

I've recently started up my own website so why not check it out and let me know what you think. www.annspage.net

RE: Dealing with Misunderstandings When Outspoken
Sounds like you were both in the wrong at the time but just let go.

When you meet at Church, hug as normal and apologise, then leave it at that.

You both owe it to your friends to be civil, you don't have to like each other but you need to get on with things without making your friends feel uncomfortable. ... View related article.

RE: Quick Meals For Busy Mom
Chilli is one of my favourites for this, just reheat while you cook the rice. Also you can make a really big portion and freeze half of it so you have it ready for the following week.

Have a home-made soup ready so they can tuck into this while something else is cooking. ... View related article.

RE: Babysitting Advice For 13 Year Old
Just tell her to enjoy it sensibly and not get the child over excited. The child is probably looking forward to it as much as she is and the adults are the only anxious people. ... View related article.

RE: Saving Money on Packed Lunches
Making five lunches a day can be expensive and we all love fruit & nut mix so I make up a big batch and divide into little plastic containers.

The healthfood stores usually have good offers on large packs of mixed fruit and brazil nuts, then I buy salted nuts and one pack of chocolate raisins in the supermarket, so it doesn't work out too expensive. I mix it all in a big bowl and fill the ten little containers from that then refill them from the big bowl during the week.

I leave the big bowl on the worktop so it's there when anyone wants a quick healthy snack, there's never any waste.

RE: Starting a Budget
Hi Malmal,

I don't know anything about the envelope method but here's what worked for me. It is not something that will happen quickly but it is something that is definitely worth doing.

Step One
Take all your credit cards out of your wallet, cut up all except one that you will have in case of a serious emergency. Put this card away somewhere safely out of reach, it is only to give you peace of mind, not to be used other than in a real emergency.

Step Two
Get a big notebook and as you spend money record it, then if you could have done without this item or settled for a cheaper alternative put a big red mark after the money you spent. Be really honest with yourself, think of how you could have spent less.

Here are a few ways to instantly save some money.
Bring your lunch to work instead of buying it.
Buy store brands instead of name brands for some things.
If you take a bus then think about walking some of the way to save some fares, this will also get you fitter.
Join the library instead of buying books and magazines.
Cancel your daily paper delivery if you don't read it every day, then just buy it when you really have time to read it.
Spend some time looking for bargains for birthday presents.
Babysit for a friend or family member, that way you will be doing something good as well as getting out.
Unplug all electrical things that are not being used, turn off and unplug the tv and computer each night or when you are leaving the house.

Step Three
Instead of going for expensive nights out, invite your friends around, explain that you are just watching your finances and need to curb your spending for a while.

Step Four
Plan your grocery shopping. Make a list of what you need for the week, and only buy what is on the list. DO NOT SHOP WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY it is too tempting to buy extras.

Step Five
Plan how you will pay off your debts, every dollar helps, so if you have a few dollars left over at the end of each two weeks then pay extra off your biggest debt.

Step Six
As you pay off your debts you should also save for something you would like to do in the future when you are out of debt, maybe a special holiday. Little by little you will see this money mount up as you are achieving your goal of becoming debt free.

Step Seven
Now that you are not working two jobs you have more time to yourself, use this time to do a complete clearout, go through every box and cupboard in your house and have a yard sale. Then whatever money you make should be divided equally between each of your debts and your savings.

Step Eight
According as you completely pay off a credit card cancel that card.

Finally, congratulations on taking this step to control your spending and shaping the new you. It worked for me and I have never again been in debt in 18 years. It was hard work to get started on but it got easier along the way and was definitely worth it.

RE: My 5 Month Old Fights Going To Sleep
Michelle,

I assume your baby is healthy and doesn't have an ear infection, often there is no sign of this other than the baby is irritable. If you haven't had her checked out then I would do that to make sure it's nothing medical.

But maybe it's just that your baby needs a bit more play-time before going to sleep, she might not be tired, so why not play on the floor with her for a while to tire her out. This will also help if she has any wind which could be making her cry.

Crying isn't always a bad thing either, it's her only form of communicating at this stage. If she is just crying and whinging and you know there is nothing wrong with her try encouraging her to play with a teething toy. Hold it gently in her hand with her and show her to rub it up and down her lips, even while she's crying, if you start laughing at it she will probably start laughing too. Remember it'll take her a while to get good at doing this.

Another thing you could try out is, for a few days when your baby is most content play a music box for her, then she will associate it with being content. So when she is upset play the music for her and it might settle her down again.

Don't worry though, it might take a little while but you'll find what works for her. ... View related article.

RE: Dealing With a Nasty Boss
Hi Sandy,

It really is annoying to work with someone like that and it can be difficult to deal with them.

If each day as you are going to work you are ready to deal with this person being nasty, by having decided in advance how you will respond to them then you are less likely to be annoyed.

So, if you decide that as long as they are nice you will be nice too, but if they cross the line and say something unacceptable then nice and loudly but in a nice tone, just say 'Pardon?' This way you will draw the attention of others and she is less likely to repeat it, so you win. If she does repeat it, purposely misunderstand her, let on you thought she said something nice, thank her for her interest or whatever and she will be the one annoyed.

Secretly you will be smiling at getting the upperhand and so you can leave work in a better mood.

Or my fathers favourite was to totally disregard what the person said and make a comment about the weather.

I would also agree with marking your calendar with the days she is mean so that if there is a pattern then you will be ready for her.

If it's possible though you should look for a new job where you can be yourself and enjoy every aspect of your job.

Good luck.

RE: Dress Well For Less Money
A suggestion for getting really good bargains is to volunteer some time at a charity shop, you don't get paid cash for it but you do get first pick of new items and if you're really lucky maybe a staff discount. So it's a win - win situation. ... View related article.
