Profile For Stellaluna - Frugal Living is Rad!

I am Susan's (one of Thrifty Fun's founders) youngest daughter.  I have been a staff member of Thrifty Fun since 2005 and a moral supporter since the begining of TF.

I live in WA with my Husband, two chow chows and a cat.  I love making recycled crafts and figuring out how to live both a sustainable and frugal life.  The both don't always go hand in hand and I enjoy figuring out how they can.

RE: Game Board Purse (cookie)
Yes, this was the most difficult part for me. When I did this, I left extra vinyl to work with so I could sew it up, but it did not get as close as I would have liked. My only other suggestion would to leave the bottom board piece out and instead just sew in doubled vinyl. Then place the board piece in the bottom of the finished purse for support. It would be best if it was also incased in the vinyl. By doing this you would have a little more flexability and may be able to get it in close where you want it. ... View related article.

RE: News from Stella in Vietnam
Hello Nicole,
It is so good to hear from you I am sorry I did not get to meet you when you picked up Huong. I can't seem to load your blog page but I will try again a different day. Huong looks the happiest I have ever seen her in this picture. That makes me feel so good. She was so shy with us volunteers.
Take Care and Keep in touch, when I am Back in the US I am only a 3 hour drive to portland.

RE: Maggie (Australian Shepherd/Chow)
This looks a lot like our Maggie here at Thrifty Fun. She was found tied to a shelter fence. She is also part chow, likes to chase dogs at the dog park, squeak her toys and is very smart and fun. Maybe they are long lost sisters? We are baffled that anyone would have wanted to give her up.

RE: Packing For Your First Year in College
If you will have roommates you should work out with them ahead of time what they can contribute, this saves you and your house mates from have multiples of everything.

If you will have a kitchen you should find out who has what kitchen items.
You may need:
Microwave
One Big Pot
One Medium sized Pot
A frying Pan
A spatula
A serving spoon
Knifes
Can opener
Spices
Tea Kettle?
Silverware
Plates-You could each bring two place settings (two incase you had friends come over for a meal, I did this all the time when I was in college) or one person can bring a set.

Glasses and cups
Broom and dust pan
Mop
Vacuum (sometimes dorms have these to check out)
Toilet brush
Plunger
Cleaning Products
Extra Lighting? (may be needed)

For yourself you should bring:

A couple towels
A couple sets of sheets
Blankets
Pillows (however many you usually use)
Clothing and shoes, coats (just the stuff you actually wear)
Tolietries
Laundry Basket/bag
Laundry detergent

You should bring a few comfort items, things that will make you feel at home. A photo album is nice to have so you can show your new friends your family, you when you were younger, your best friends your pets, your town, etc...

I think it is most important to remember that you will have to pack everything up move than once if you move home for the summer, or to a new dorm, apartment or house sometime during your college years. I moved at least four times in a two year period when I was in college.

If you are going a long way from home be sure to have some extra money to buy things that you may have forgotten, thrift stores are great places to get almost any household item.

Something else to think about is not bringing items that you would be really upset if it were lost or stolen. My first week of college, the majority of my clothing was stolen out of the washing machine. So I would advise you to not leave your clothing unattended in a public laundromat, bring your homework and do it there.

Good luck,

Good Question Sandy. Yes you can use your regular sewing machine. I have used both an old gear driven Singer and a feather weight singer. Sometimes as layers get thicker it can be a bit difficult but I have made it work. Although on the gear driven it worked much better.
I used a heavy duty needle, like a jean needle. I have not experienced and ripping on any of the things I have made out of the pouches, I think this is due to the edge of the pouch is thicker than the rest and prevents it from tearing. ... View related article.
