I just heard about this last night on the radio. It was suggested that a light box can be used since they are attracted to the light and then they can be transported all at once to the great out doors away from the house. I'm not sure of where to get a light box at. Here's a website that may help: For more detailed information on ladybugs, visit the Ladybug Lady's website (ladybuglady.com)
You could also use a "shop vacuum". This type of vacuum is easy to use for collect ladybugs. When using this to vacuum up ladybugs, use a clean bag or pad the bottom with a cloth. After all is are cleaned up at one time, release the unwelcome guests outside. Hope something helps! ... View related article.
Maybe a certificate for a massage, tickets for a concert or dinner show, or sports event, car wash certificates. Think of every day things he can use or will use. They can still be a "gift". Make up a box of a lot of little things. ... View related article.
I found this info online somewheres and thought you could use some of it since it was the 50's.
Bridesmaids w/little neck sashes/bandannas tied cute to the side. You could find one of those lace mini-veils that go just over the eyes in red or black for that pop of color you're looking for and the other color could be utilized in shoe color or hair accessory (maybe a flower even) Polka dot crinaline ( the puffy under dress material).
-Photobooth (either old school county fair kind, or for better quality but less nostalgia a manned digital booth. They cram big groups of people into them for great pics! Dress up supplies would be awesome to go along with the photo booth so your guests could get in on the fun and would function as your guest book as you could have them (or a designated person) scrapbook the pics into an album and sign w/lil notes from them. Supplies could include 50's sunglasses (girls winged & guys goofy taped ones), wigs, juke box, bandannas, coke bottles, old school microphone, maybe even some fake application tattoos! etc.
-You should have a soda fountain or something fun setup to go with the cake! Have it be an interactive station w/root beer floats, make your own Sunday, maybe a little bit of cake? But you could save on cake $ and just get a small cake top for the pics and the wedding party while everyone else gets the dessert smorgasbord : )
-It'd be cool to serve mini hamburger hords and fun finger food like that! Pigs in a blanket dare I say? -The DJ would have to be willing to be in on the theme too; outfit and all. A band would be even cooler yet... Also maybe even a couple swing dance instructors
-A cute vintage cake topper would be amazing. -A 'sweet' idea for centerpieces would be ice cream dishes (footed sundae bowls, banana split dishes etc) and fill them with deep red roses, add a spoon, some glitter sprinkles, place on top of an old record and make sure to have cool table numbers too (coke bottles w/number sticking out?)
I would advise lots of white christmas lights wrapped around every available beam- very elegant, very cheap, much safer than candles, and you can either reuse them or sell them. You can also put flower arangements in half gallon sized canning jars (prairie type flowers like sunflowers, baby's breath and daisies- inexpensive, hardy and country-style all in one) and decorated the tables with a checked runner for the country feel.
On a budget you can make candle lanterns out of tin cans. Clean them, strip the paper off, fill with water and freeze. Then punch out the design of your choice with a hammer and nail. If you want to hang them up punch out a hole on each side and add a bailing wire handle. The ice keeps the tin from bending. You can also make lanterns with a candle, a canning jar and some bailing wire wrapped around the top. These can be decorated with herbs or silks, but be very careful of fire- try everything out to make sure it wont catch! Barns are made almost entirely out of combustable materials! ...
