Always looking for ways to save money and time.  Making a few bucks for gas is good, too :)

Looking for sponsors!  We have a cycling team called Team Tania in honor of my wife.  She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis since about 1993.  We started with six family and friends and now we're over 200+.

RE: Publishing a Recipe Book
Paula,

Check out Blurb.com where you can self publish a few or many books for your sale.

http://www.blurb.com

Here's the description from their FAQ page:

"Theres no point in false modesty: BookSmart is the only start-to-finish publishing service simple and smart enough to make anyone an author. (This means you.) Better yet, the software is free. So download and play all you like you pay only when you publish your bookstore-quality book. How sweet is that?"

"Once you discover what a delight it is to make your own book with BookSmart, youre going to want to see what it looks like professionally bound and printed. And the only thing that beats holding your very own bookstore-quality book is handing over copies to legions of admirers."

Although I have not used this service, they have been listed/featured in TrendWatching which is very well known for keeping an eye on upcoming/new market trends.

Have fun!

Patrick

RE: Setting Up a TV Antenna
Check out Radio Shack online at http://www.radioshack.com
Do a search for "antenna" and you'll see quite a few options. I have a friend of mine that has used the roof-top version since they first came out (yes -- that long ago!). He's never had cable or a dish all these years. Only recently did he pay about $250 to replace it with a new one. We haven't had cable for years and are using a set-top pair of rabbit ears.

If you opt for the "amplified" indoor version, do check out the rating for the db gain. Ours is 19db. The higher the number the better. We found the RCA model at Wal-Mart to be the highest rating for the best price.

HOWEVER, be aware that as of mid-February 2009 all analog TV broadcasts will end. After that all broadcasts will be digital. You will need a digital converter for your TV. "Fortunately" the US government is offering a $40 voucher (limit two per household) to help offset the costs.

This change-over is known as the "Digital TV Transition and Public Safety Act" which became law on 2/8/06. Here is the official website:
http://www.ntia.doc.gov/otiahome/dtv/index.html

And here's the "consumer friendly" site:
http://www.dtv.gov/index.html

Hope that helps!

RE: Electric Power Loss
Bill:
I'm no electrician, but here is my $0.02:

Even though you have things "turned off" many items are still drawing current. Televisions and PCs for example use an "instant on" feature. Older appliances like refrigerators can be hogs, too. Also, you might want to have your HVAC unit checked as well. Did you check to see how "tight" your house is?

Depending on how far you want to go, you can always unplug each appliance to see if makes a difference at the meter. You'll need a helper with either a cell phone or a walkie-talkie to let you know when they unplug something or notice the meter spinning slower.

Check out http://www.EnergyHog.org for some ideas.

Just a few thoughts...

RE: Craft Uses for Leather Furniture Samples
Are you trying to sell the pieces or looking for ways to make things to sell?

If you're just trying to sell - maybe eBay?

Making things? How about the ubiquitous key fob? Cut into thin strips for leather straps or ties?

Here is a site you can visit with some ideas:

Best wishes!

RE: Grease on My Dog
One trick that works with grease from bike chains: dish liquid. It's a common use for those of us that work on bicycles and it works on dogs, too.

We have a white Bichon that decided to lay under one of our bikes. Needless to say, he got a "geek mark" on his back.

I took some dish liquid (Dawn is the best!) and worked his fur with it. I followed it up with his regular doggie shampoo and it was gone.

Hope that helps! ... View related article.
