If you are wanting to de-seed them, I would suggest doing that before freezing them. We tried this for salsa and was a disaster. If they are frozen, you can't tell what's meat or what is seeds. We also tried to let them thaw, and they 'deflate' and are a mess to deal with. The meat of the tomato changes drastically if they are frozen. We have refrigerated them until we were ready to use them and didn't have any problems. ... View related article. |

| RE: Emergency Preparedness |
Here in Iowa, we have had many power outages from tornadoes, ice storms, etc (weeks for some) and massive flooding over the past couple of years. My husband and I don't keep much emergency food. Our cupboards are always normally stocked with soups, vegetables and various other ingredients we could eat in case we get snowed in for days. We also normally have bread in various forms in our freezer because we stock up when it's on sale. One winter we lost power for over 24 hours, and we had a nice candlelite dinner next to the woodburning fireplace with our soup we heated on it! :)
We moved to the country a year ago this month, and the first thing we bought was a generator. We must have it for our well to run (if we don't have water, we can't flush!) Also, it is going to be nice to have some electricity running in parts of the house. We have our electrical box marked with what to turn on after the generator hooked up so there is no confusion.
Most importantly, we have a flat of water bottles (in case the water gets bad) and gallon jugs for our dogs. Don't forget about the pets! ... View related article. |

| RE: Advice for a First Time Home Buyer |
I am a Realtor in the Cedar Rapids area, and I would suggest that if you are ready to buy then buy. All renting is helping someone pay off their mortgage and putting money in their pockets. With a mortgage you will get the 8K rebate and also allow you to deduct the mortgage interest at the end of the year.
Also, the prices for homes in Iowa City are ridiculous! For $200,000 house in Cedar Rapids, you will easily pay $250,000! I am not sure how much more the condos are, but I would bet that it is a lot more! With the boys, you are probably wanting to stay in their school district, but if you aren't set on it, try to buy outside of Iowa City and to the South. The corridor is also very pricey!
Good luck! ... View related article. |
