I use a product from Top Performance, it is an Animal Quarters Disenfectant, detergent and deodorant. You can but it from PetEdge.com for around $20 for a gallon which is a very strong concentrate that you dilute with water. It will make about 250 gallons. It is what many vets and groomers use because it also kills parvo virus as well as others. I got an attachment for my garden hose, that I put the disenfectant in and it automatically mixes the solution as I spray. I have raised shelties for about 15 years and I have used this almost as long and love the results. ... View related article.
Pea gravel works well. Just make sure you scoop poop everyday otherwise it gets squished into the rocks and makes a mess. If you keep up with the poo, the rocks stay clean by hosing it about once a week. ... View related article.
Putting cedar chips in and/or around the kennel helps. It is a natural bug repelent. Of course I keep Advantage or Frontline on my gang as well since they do come in the house at night. I haven't had a problem with fleas in years. ... View related article.
You have to use Advantage or Frontline to stop the reproduction cycle and get it under control. Using these will help rid them from your house also. Continue for 3 months, then you can use a more natural method if you choose. Nothing that you can buy at the store is going to work. You are just wasting your money. I have raised shelties (look like mini collies, yes with all that hair) for over 15 years, in my house not a kennel, and have never had a problem since I started using Advantage and frontline years ago. I do switch between the two products to keep the fleas from becoming immune to just one. I only use them during the warm weather. And I always have at least 5 or 6 dogs, I have had up to 10 at one time! You can visit my 4-legged kids here www.quiltingcove.com ... View related article.
Table scraps are very bad for dogs, especially when that is all they eat. It causes all kind of intestinal problems and some serious illness. You will wind up spending more on the vet. The dog food companies lie to the consumer all the time. They put stuff into dog food that has no business being there.
Do the research and find a company that makes a good quality food. In the end you feed less and that means you have less waste to clean up. Here is a link to a great site that tells you what the ingredients 'really' mean and how a lot of different brands stack up. http://drydogfood.bravehost.com/menu.htm... View related article.
