RE: Feeding an Azalea Plant
I believe azaleas are acid-loving plants, so you can mix some used coffee grounds into the soil occasionally. ... View related article.

RE: Advice for Choosing a Dog Breed
Try to watch the tv show on Animal Planet called Dogs 101. It's a very entertaining hour-long program that goes into detail about different pure-bred dog breeds and both the pros and cons of owning them. Topics covered include how much exercise the breed requires, how difficult it is to train them, how much grooming is needed, whether they're good around children, what health problems they are susceptible to, etc. The Animal Planet website may possibly have this info summarized for you. Good Luck!

RE: AM/FM Radio Reviews
My dad is a big fan of AM radio and the various talk shows. Check out the C. Crane Company, Inc. which has a print catalog and website (www.ccrane.com/) He purchased the CCRadioPlus, an AM/FM digital radio, and has been happy with it and the company's customer service. These radios are pretty pricey, but they have a variety of models, as well as AM antennaes and other equipment. He lives in PA and has received some stations as far away as Detroit and Hartford, CT.

RE: Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Burning Out
Every single CFL I have used has died prematurely, and I was not using them outdoors, in a dimmer, in a 3-way, or in any other previously "not recommended" situation. I've tried the cheap bulbs and also the brand name bulbs with the same result. I have marked my bulbs with the installation date using a Sharpie pen, and not a single one has lasted even 5 or 7 years; not even close.

Some of the bulbs that died were GE with their 5-year guarantee, but who wants to mess around with postage costs to send back a bad bulb to get a replacement, especially to have to do this more than once? It would be different if I could take the bad bulb to the store where purchased and just get a replacement there, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon if the bulb is 2 years old.

Also, CFLs are supposed to be discarded in a special way since they release mercury into the atmosphere if broken, just like regular fluorescent bulbs. This is a perfect example of a product designed to solve a problem which actually creates another problem with its disposal and the effect of that on the environment and our health.

I'm all for saving energy and already practice that in my home, but I think these bulbs are great for the company's bottom lines and not so great for the consumer.

RE: What Is Biological Washing Powder?
I just watched an episode of How Clean is Your House today on BBC America, and according to Kim Woodburn on the show, biological washing powder is "clothes washing powder," or what we here in America call laundry detergent.

RE: Homemade Presents For Dog Lover
Paw Shaped Christmas Stocking

One year I made a Christmas "stocking" for a dog-loving relative in the shape of a dog's paw. I think I saw this idea in a magazine, and I used two pieces of red felt for the body of the paw and green felt for the pads of the paw. You could also use fleece or some other fabric. I drew the paw freehand, so you could make it as large or small as you wanted.

Also, I first machine-stitched the pads to the felt and then stitched around the perimeter of the paw, leaving a straight edge at the top for the opening of the "stocking" where I also sewed a loop in the top left corner so it could be hung on a fireplace. All of the above sewing could also be done by hand if a sewing machine is not available, and as another option, a blanket stitch with yarn would also look nice around the perimeter of the paw. Lastly, you can also personalize the paw with the dog's name in fabric paint, glitter, etc. My sewing skills are very basic, and I'm not very crafty or artistic, but this was really easy to do and takes a minimum of time. I wish I had a picture of it to share, but I hope I've described it well.

RE: Cleaning Metal Mini Blinds
You can either clean your blinds in your tub/shower or outside, but you'll need to figure out a way to hang them up, like on a clothesline for example. Next, take some Scrubbing Bubbles foaming bathroom cleaner (the dollar store versions of this work great) and spray your blinds thoroughly, including the strings and any other parts you want clean. Now watch the grease and grime melt right off your blinds. Just rinse off the blinds with a hose or handheld shower sprayer. You don't have to rub each individual slat or the strings, but if your blinds are really grimy, you may have to repeat the Scrubbing Bubbles, and then let them hang outside or in your tub/shower until dry. I have used this method for both aluminum and vinyl blinds with great results.

RE: Cleaning a Glass Cruet
Fill your cruet with hot water and drop in a denture cleaning tablet. Let it soak until the water is at room temperature. Then dump out this mixture and rinse. Those denture cleaning tabs usually do the job.
