Profile For BigFish1 - Cleaning Resources

Hi.  I'm a cleaning guy that has cleaned up just about every mess you can imagine (and more).  Along with a friend of mine, we have put together a blog on cleaning and maintenance and like to share our expertise here from time to time.  Thanks!

RE: Red Kool Aid on Carpet
There are a number of methods to get out red kool aid from carpet, and an actual chemical that is designed for carpets that does the trick.

Some home remedies work better than others, but many times people use dish washing liquid on their carpet and over time it causes a grey spot to appear in that area, since dish washing liquid attracts soil, as a professional cleaner, I have witnessed this problem many times.

The grey spot appears after about 1-3 months and becomes hard to remove since it bonds with the the red kool-aid dye residue left in the carpet. Sadly, many people end up with an ugly dark spot on the carpet versus a red kool aid spot.

If you go the dish washing liquid route to begin with, realize it is only a quick fix and make sure the dish washing liquid is diluted and use a carpet cleaning extractor with a rinse agent. You can rent one for about $50.00 at your local home rental center and you can get rinsing agent for carpet for about $18.00 per gallon.

My friend wrote about his technique which anyone can do at home without expensive equipment rental, along with the free rinsing chemicals he uses. You can read about it at his carpet cleaning blog http://bigfishservicecompany.wordpr ... d-juice-and-colored-spots-in-carpet/ ... View related article.

RE: Recommendations for Vacuums
For a vacuum that does a good overall job, I really like the Kenmore Progressive- bagged vacuum. It was rated #1 by consumer reports from what I hear. My friend in the cleaning business really likes this vacuum because it has a 14 foot hose on the back and works on flooring too. I paid about $250 for mine a year ago. ... View related article.

RE: Looking for a Good, Inexpensive Vacuum Cleaner
I read your message and we have been very happy with the Hoover Tempo Widepath. The vacuum is light, it has good power, it is not messy and has a bag. ... View related article.

RE: Bissell Carpet Shampooer Isn't Working
The bissell has a small pump that is trigger fired. This could be stuck since it is plastic, or if you run detergent through the machine, the alkaline buildup could cause it to stop working. Try wd40 on the trigger to see if that helps or try to get to the pump and see if there is a short or other problem. ... View related article.

RE: Looking for a Good Carpet Cleaner for Old Carpet
The trouble with steam cleaners you buy in the store is that they are not very durable and you will end up buying more than one in five years, I just about guarantee it. As professional carpet cleaners, I have seen the carpet express in action. Yes, they are not cheap (about $650) but they do a great job and are easy to use and maintain. Should last any homeowner a lifetime. ... View related article.

RE: Smoothie Stain on Carpet
You can try the heat transfer method. What I mean by this is you can use a iron, some white terry cloth towels and an inexpensive chemical to remove the stain. ... View related article.

RE: Koolaid Stain out of Carpet
Before you attempt the usage of Dawn dish washing liquid there are a few things to consider. As a professional carpet cleaner we handle these spots all the time and have run into people that have called us a few months after they tried this method because the red kool aid spot is now grey, since the dawn liquid does not freely rinse from the carpet, it attracts dirt like crazy, creating a grey spot over time.

There is a very inexpensive chemical that does the job better than dish soap my friend wrote about it at http://bigfishservicecompany.wordpr ... d-juice-and-colored-spots-in-carpet/ ... View related article.

RE: Red Kool Aid on Carpet
The dish washing liquid trick is not all that effective in the long run, it works ok, but in spite of the dish washing liquid, not because of it.

What I mean by this is the heat and steam and hot water are breaking the dye bond, not the dish washing liquid. The problem is you are steaming into the carpet detergent that WILL create a dark or grey spot over time since dish washing liquid attracts dirt.

A better option is a inexpensive chemical that along with the steam iron will really get rid of the spot and leave no residue. ... View related article.
